class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">For nearly a century and half-from Fielding to the last of the great Victorians-The English novel swept along on a tide of creative energy which reached full power in Dickens's careless vitality and exuberance. Dickens neglected form and style because his need for utterance was so urgent. Later novelists, George Meredith and Henry James among them, had less to say and could afford time to say it more carefully and when after 1914, creative energy became still less abundant, disproportionate attention began to be given to theories of fiction. But other phases of the Twentieth-Century novel intervened. As the masculine force and creative energy died down among men writers, women seem to take those qualities. Women had written fine novels in the early years of the twentieth century.The present paper discusses the women novelist and their novels written in the first half of twentieth century. However, over the past few decades, researchers and scholars have started to re-evaluate and acknowledge the importance of women’s literary and theoretical work to the rise and evolution of the genre. This article adds to these revisionist efforts by contributing to the ongoing discussion on the theoretical legacy left by some of the most notable British women writers of the long eighteenth century. The article analyses several texts (prefaces, dedications, dialogues, essays, reviews) in which they expressed their perspectives on questions situated at the core of the eighteenth-century debates concerning the novel. The thirteen years that bridged the completion and the publication informs changes in the contextual and literary circumstances between the late eighteenth and the early nineteenth century. Northanger Abbey adopts an authorial narrator whereas authoriality was not the literary trend when the work was published. At the time of composition, because of their female gender, women writers experienced difficulties when negotiating with the publishers and explicitly making social criticism. When they employed an authorial stance in their writing, it was preferred that the authority of the voice should be appropriately mitigated. Developing on Susan S. Lanser’s arguments, my essay explores the narrative strategies adopted in the creation of an authorial narrator. Taking the view that cultural construction of gender can affect narrative form and production, I would enhance the reading of the novel from a feminist narratological perspective. I shall first delineate how the use of paratextual texts reveals the conditions of female authorship and the position of women novelists of Austen’s time. Then I draw on Claudia L. Johnson’s argument that Austen employs understatement as a form of overstatement to minimize the overt authority of the narrative voice. As a famous 19 th Century novelist, Jane Austen tried to show the realities of women in her time. Jane Austen was a published female novelist who wrote under her own name which can be seen as an important feminist quality. She gifted six novels to readers about women centred in the thoughts, desires and behaviours of them. Besides, new innovations in the 19 th Century literature have also been mentioned in this study. ONDOKUZUNCU YÜZYIL EDEBİYATI VE JANE AUSTEN'IN ROMANLARINDAKİ FEMİNİST MOTİFLER ÖZET Bu çalışma, genel anlamda Jane Austen'in eserlerindeki feminist bakış açısını ortaya çıkarmayı amaçlamaktadır. Ondokuzuncu yüzyılın ünlü romancısı Jane Austen kendi çağının kadınlarının gerçeklerini göstermeye çalışmıştır. Austen'in bütün eserlerindeki ortak tema ondokuzuncu yüzyıl İngilteresi'nin genel sosyal sınıf yapısı ve genç kadınların evlilikleri ile ilgilidir. Jane Austen kendi adı altında yazmış olan kadın romancıdır ve bu özelliği ile önemli bir feminist özellik ortaya koyar. Yazar, okuyuculara kadınların düşüncelerini, taleplerini ve davranışlarını anlatan altı roman bırakmıştır. The research aspects in this sphere have been illustrated; the insight on the struggles of women writers against male editors and authors and their selfishness and total disregard for them has been highlighted; the challenge faced by women writers of being unaccepted in the literary world, often having to prove the worthiness and importance of their works, being categorized in ways different to men has been emphasized on. The research has been done on the basis of the analysis of gender studies' approach to women's writing. By taking a closer look at the public reception of the female authors in the nineteenth-twentieth centuries we assume that the narrow-mindedness of the patriarchal society and the lack of basic human rights to freedom of women's writing in this period hindered the development of female literature. In order to step on the male-dominated literary path and stand alongside the men, female authors had to use male pseudonyms or write anonymously to avoid the condescending judgements of men-critics.
