Celene Ibrahim's book, Women and Gender in the Qur'an, challenges these assumptions. Through analysis of female representations in the Qur'an, Ibrahim earns a place alongside noteworthy scholars such as Fazlur Rahman, Ingrid Mattson, Amina Wadud, and Barbara Stowasser. Ibrahim investigates Qur'anic stories and themes using a kaleidoscope of methods from both the traditional Qur'anic sciences and contemporary western scholarship. She accomplishes this task skillfully while attending to central questions about female embodiment, agency, sexuality, and roles within religious and familiar structures. Women and Gender in the Qur'an is divided into four chapters, with each exploring a different Qur'anic theme and textual dimension. Ibrahim's analysis is divided into two main components: an in-depth textual investigation and what she refers to as a "femalecentric" reading of this data (10). Descriptively, the book offers a comprehensive introduction to women in Qur'anic narratives-the stories of the prophets and their families-and to the Qur'an's language. It introduces readers to both prominent female figures, such as Mary, and more obscure representations embedded within Qur'anic parables. These include the "one woman who unravels the yarn" (Q 16:92). Ibrahim also offers an in-depth semantic analysis of key theopolitical terms, such as "family (ahl)" and "house (ā l)," highlighting the female presence in each (28). Cognizant of the issues related to scholarly positionality and authority, Ibrahim defines her interpretive lens carefully. She refers to herself as a "tentative" female Muslim exegete or "mufassira" (8), thereby situating her brand of analysis at the intersection of Muslim exegesis (tafsīr) and feminist studies without oversimplifying the complexities of each intellectual tradition or their implications within the Muslim/secular academic context-particularly those presented by the term "feminism." Hers is a pious reading that is concerned with female bodies. By exploring medieval exegetical texts between the ninth and fourteenth centuries on critical verses related to gender, this chapter illustrates the influence of exegetes’ socio-cultural milieus on their commentaries on gender roles and hierarchies. Despite the influence of their patriarchal contexts, medieval exegetes also reflected a consistent concern with women’s legal rights, such as kind companionship and fair treatment within a marriage. Hence, the genre of law critically intervenes in medieval Qurʾanic exegesis, informing the way exegetes interpreted key terms in the Qurʾan. This chapter provides a close analysis of exegetical interpretations on three key verses related to polygyny (Q. 4:3), men’s disciplinary authority over women (Q. 4:34), and men’s nushūz or turbulence (Q. 4:128). When talking about women, the Holy Qur’an tells us about the individuals, including Queen of Sheba, Maryam, Maryam's mother, the mother of Moses, etc. The Holy Qur’an talks about women when explaining the regulations concerning inheritance, marital life, divorce and other such issues. It also provides evidence, showing that gender equality in the Qurʾān is achieved in two ways: firstly, through linguistic devices that are devoid of gender distinctions, and secondly, through concurrent use of masculine and feminine gender markers in one context. The masculine discourse is, however, more prominent in the verses of this book and manifests itself to varying degrees in three ways: (1) in some verses, only masculine indicators are used but it can be inferred based on the (Taghlīb) principle that both men and women are the intended addressees; (2) in some verses, rules regarding women are stipulated, whilst men are, in fact, the main addressees and (3) in verses that state rules on reciprocal issues such as divorce and marriage but these rules are addressed to only men.
