Large flint axes were acquired as finished products from southern Scandinavia and were deposited in specific, waterlogged places in the landscape. The application of new empirical research techniques has revealed unexpected patterns of use and treatment of these axes. Moreover, contextual analysis shows significant differences in terms of size and wear patterns compared with axes retrieved from megalithic tombs. The evidence strongly suggests that the observed differences may have been linked to completely different use-lives between the two classes of axes. Drawing on ethnographic analogy, it will be argued that the large flint axes deposited in natural places in the landscape became animated with special powers through the act of production. The 2003 rescue excavation yielded an enormous amount of artefacts of flint, various types of stone, as well as amber, bone and antler objects. A technological and functional analysis of these artefacts demonstrated the presence of different toolkits, thus providing insight into the technological system. The characteristics of these toolkits suggest the existence of a long term tradition of tool making and using in the wetlands of the Rhine/Meuse delta.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Toolkits and technological choices at the Middle Neolithic site of Schipluiden, The Netherlands","attachmentId":37017880,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/11502034/Toolkits_and_technological_choices_at_the_Middle_Neolithic_site_of_Schipluiden_The_Netherlands","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Dating the objects from Rolde and Molen van Bels in the Northern Netherlands - Neolithic 'handaxes' revisited
Linda Kiers

A mind set on flint. Owing to its location beneath this younger site and a layer of natural sediment, also the Neolithic surface surrounding the stone cist was excavated. This provided a rare opportunity to study the use of space surrounding the monument. The stone cist was probably built between 3200 and 2950 cal. BC. The flint assemblage testifies to the activities that took place in the area surrounding the stone cist. Although the particular date of these activities is difficult to correlate to the stone cist, it seems that these took place during both TRB and later Neolithic periods. The flint assemblage cannot easily be fit into a bipartite division between ritual and everyday activities. Compared to other TRB stone cists, the Heveskesklooster stone cist yielded few chamber finds. BC) in northwestern Europe. These themes are explored in a multi-facetted approach which compare the finds from three regions: the so-called source societies in Germany where the wedges were produced and two areas in which these items are found as a result of exchange. It concerns southern Scandinavia (the Ertebølle culture) and the Netherlands (the Swifterbant culture).

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"2011. This is the first indication that later inhabitants of the site may have disturbed the content of the burial. Another can be found in the absence of some of the orthostats. Both arguments suggest that in their behaviour the Late Neolithic habitants at Heveskesklooster did not revere the stone cist burial as an ancestral place, but instead seem to have desecrated it.
