And a man<MH376> of Bethlehem<MH1035> in Judah<MH3063> went<MH1980> to reside<MH1481a> in the land<MH7704> of Moab<MH4124> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>with his wife<MH802> and his two<MH8147> sons<MH1121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>The name<MH8034> of the man<MH376> <i>was</i> Elimelech<MH458>, and the name<MH8034> of his wife<MH802>, Naomi<MH5281>; and the names<MH8034> of his two<MH8147> sons<MH1121> <i>were</i> Mahlon<MH4248> and Chilion<MH3630>, Ephrathites<MH673> of Bethlehem<MH1035> in Judah<MH3063>. So they entered<MH935> the land<MH7704> of Moab<MH4124> and remained<MH1961> there<MH8033>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Then Elimelech<MH458>, Naomi’s<MH5281> husband<MH376>, died<MH4191>; and she was left<MH7604> with her two<MH8147> sons<MH1121>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And they took<MH5375> for themselves<MH1992a> Moabite<MH4125> women <i>as</i> wives<MH802>; the name<MH8034> of the one<MH259> was Orpah<MH6204>, and the name<MH8034> of the other<MH8145>, Ruth<MH7327>. And they lived<MH3427> there<MH8033> about ten<MH6235> years<MH8141>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>both<MH8147> Mahlon<MH4248> and Chilion<MH3630> also<MH1571> died<MH4191>, and the woman<MH802> was left<MH7604> without<MH7604> her two<MH8147> sons<MH3206> and her husband<MH376>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then she arose<MH6965> with her daughters-in-law<MH3618> to return<MH7725> from the land<MH7704> of Moab<MH4124>, because<MH3588> she had heard<MH8085> in the land<MH7704> of Moab<MH4124> that the LORD<MH3068> had visited<MH6485> His people<MH5971a> by giving<MH5414> them food<MH3899>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>So she departed<MH3318> from the place<MH4725> where<MH834, 8033> she was, and her two<MH8147> daughters-in-law<MH3618> with her; and they went<MH1980> on the way<MH1870> to return<MH7725> to the land<MH776> of Judah<MH3063>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But Naomi<MH5281> said<MH559> to her two<MH8147> daughters-in-law<MH3618>, “Go<MH1980>, return<MH7725> each<MH802> of you to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>your mother’s<MH517> house<MH1004>. May the LORD<MH3068> deal<MH6213a> kindly<MH2617a> with you as you have dealt<MH6213a> with the dead<MH4191> and with me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>May the LORD<MH3068> grant<MH5414> that you may find<MH4672> a place<MH4496> of<MH4496> rest<MH4496>, each<MH802> one<MH802> in the house<MH1004> of her husband<MH376>.” Then she kissed<MH5401a> them, and they raised<MH5375> their voices<MH6963> and wept<MH1058>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>However, they said<MH559> to her, “<i>No,</i> but we will return<MH7725> with you to your people<MH5971a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But Naomi<MH5281> said<MH559>, “Return<MH7725>, my daughters<MH1323>. Why<MH4100> should you go<MH1980> with me? Do I still<MH5750> have sons<MH1121> in my womb<MH4578>, that they may be your husbands<MH376>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Return<MH7725>, my daughters<MH1323>! Go<MH1980>, for I am<MH2204> too<MH4480> old<MH2204> to have<MH1961> a husband<MH376>. If<MH3588> I said<MH559> I have<MH3426> hope<MH8615b>, if I were even<MH1571> to have<MH1961> a husband<MH376> tonight<MH3915> and also<MH1571> give<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to sons<MH1121>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>would you therefore<MH3860> wait<MH7663b> until<MH5704, 834> they were grown<MH1431>? Would you therefore<MH3860> refrain<MH5702> from marrying<MH1115, 1961, 376>? No<MH408>, my daughters<MH1323>; for it is<MH4843> much<MH3966> more<MH4480> bitter<MH4843> for me than<MH4480> for you, because<MH3588> the hand<MH3027> of the LORD<MH3068> has come<MH3318> out<MH3318> against me.” <p class="hdg">Ruth’s Loyalty</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And they raised<MH5375> their voices<MH6963> and wept<MH1058> again<MH5750>; and Orpah<MH6204> kissed<MH5401a> her mother-in-law<MH2545>, but Ruth<MH7327> clung<MH1692> to her. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then she said<MH559>, “Behold<MH2009>, your sister-in-law<MH2994> has gone<MH7725> back<MH7725> to her people<MH5971a> and her gods<MH430>; return<MH7725> after<MH310> your sister-in-law<MH2994>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But Ruth<MH7327> said<MH559>, “Do not plead<MH6293> with me to leave<MH5800a> you <i>or</i> to turn<MH7725> back<MH7725> from following<MH310> you; for where<MH413, 834> you go<MH1980>, I will go<MH1980>, and where<MH834> you sleep<MH3885a>, I will sleep<MH3885a>. Your people<MH5971a> <i>shall be</i> my people<MH5971a>, and your God<MH430>, my God<MH430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Where<MH834> you die<MH4191>, I will die<MH4191>, and there<MH8033> I will be buried<MH6912>. May the LORD<MH3068> do<MH6213a> so to me, and worse<MH3541, 3254>, if<MH3588> <i>anything but</i> death<MH4194> separates<MH6504> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>me from you.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>When she saw<MH7200> that she was<MH553> determined<MH553> to go<MH1980> with her, she stopped<MH2308> speaking<MH1696> to her <i>about it.</i> <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>So they both<MH8147> went<MH1980> on until<MH5704> they came<MH935> to Bethlehem<MH1035>. And when they had come<MH935> to Bethlehem<MH1035>, all<MH3605> the city<MH5892b> was stirred<MH1949> because<MH5921> of them, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>the women said<MH559>, “Is this<MH2088> Naomi<MH5281>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>But she said<MH559> to them, “Do not call<MH7121> me <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Naomi<MH5281>; call<MH7121> me <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>Mara<MH4755>, for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>the Almighty<MH7706b> has dealt<MH4843> very<MH3966> bitterly<MH4843> with me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>I went<MH1980> <i>away</i> full<MH4392>, but the LORD<MH3068> has brought<MH7725> me back<MH7725> empty<MH7387>. Why<MH4100> do you call<MH7121> me Naomi<MH5281>, since the LORD<MH3068> has testified<MH6030a> against me and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>the Almighty<MH7706b> has afflicted<MH7489a> me?” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/ruth/1-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>So Naomi<MH5281> returned<MH7725>, and with her Ruth<MH7327> the Moabitess<MH4125>, her daughter-in-law<MH3618>, who returned<MH7725> from the land<MH7704> of Moab<MH4124>.
