In the ancient Near Eastern culture, expressions of grief were often public and vocal, reflecting the communal nature of life and relationships. The weeping signifies the pain of separation and the uncertainty of the future, especially for widows in a patriarchal society where their security depended on male relatives.
and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye
Orpah's kiss symbolizes a farewell and a return to her Moabite roots. The act of kissing as a form of goodbye is consistent with cultural practices of the time, indicating respect and affection. Orpah's decision to leave Naomi and return to her people and gods (as mentioned in the following verses) reflects a choice to seek security in familiar surroundings, which was a practical decision given the vulnerability of widows.
but Ruth clung to her
Ruth's clinging to Naomi is a powerful demonstration of loyalty and commitment, transcending cultural and familial expectations. The Hebrew word used here for "clung" is the same used in Genesis 2:24 to describe the bond between husband and wife, indicating a deep, covenantal loyalty. Ruth's decision foreshadows her role in the lineage of David and ultimately Jesus Christ, as her faithfulness leads her to become part of the Messianic line. This act of clinging can be seen as a type of Christ's unwavering commitment to His people, showcasing sacrificial love and devotion.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Ruth
A Moabite woman, widow of Mahlon, who demonstrates loyalty and faithfulness to her mother-in-law, Naomi.

2. Orpah
Another Moabite woman, widow of Chilion, who decides to return to her people and her gods after initially setting out with Naomi.

3. Naomi
An Israelite woman who lost her husband and sons in Moab and decides to return to Bethlehem, urging her daughters-in-law to stay in Moab.

4. Moab
The land where Naomi and her family had moved during a famine in Israel, and where Ruth and Orpah are from.

5. Bethlehem
Naomi's homeland, to which she decides to return after the death of her husband and sons.
Teaching Points
Loyalty and Commitment
Ruth's decision to cling to Naomi exemplifies true loyalty and commitment, even when it requires personal sacrifice.

Faith in Action
Ruth's actions demonstrate faith that goes beyond words, choosing to align herself with Naomi's people and God.

The Power of Choice
Orpah and Ruth both had the same opportunity, but their choices led to different paths, highlighting the importance of our decisions.

God's Providence
Ruth's loyalty sets the stage for God's providential plan, leading to her role in the lineage of David and ultimately Jesus.

Community and Belonging
Ruth's choice to stay with Naomi emphasizes the importance of community and belonging, even when it means leaving behind familiar surroundings.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Ruth 1

Why did Ruth stay with Naomi while Orpah left?

What does "a time to embrace" signify?

How does the timeline in Ruth 1:1 align with or contradict other biblical accounts of the era of the judges?

Ruth 2:1 - Does the description of Boaz as a 'man of great wealth' align with what we know of the economic conditions in ancient Israel?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(14) Kissed.--Orpah, though unwilling to leave her mother-in-law, and though warmly attached to her, still thinks of the hardships of the journey, of the hardships when the journey is done; and the comforts of home detain her.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 14. - And they, the daughters-in-law, lifted up their voice in unison and unity, as if instead of two voices there had been but one. Hence the propriety of the singular number, as in ver. 9. And wept again. The "again" doubles back on the statement in ver. 9. With uplifted voice, in shrill Oriental wail, and amid streams of tears, they bemoaned their hapless lot. Then, after the paroxysm of grief had somewhat spent itself, Orpah yielded to her mother-in-law's dissuasives, and at length imprinted on her, reluctantly and passionately, a farewell kiss. Then, not waiting to ascertain the ultimate decision of Ruth, or rather, perhaps, having now a fixed presentiment what it would be, she moved regretfully and tearfully away. She was afraid, perhaps, that if she, as well as Ruth, should insist on accompanying her mother-in-law, the two might be unreasonably burdensome to the aged widow. Perhaps, too, she was not without fear that her own burden in a foreign land, amid strangers, might be too heavy to be borne. There is not, however, the slightest need for supposing that she was, in any respect, deficient in attachment to her mother-in-law. But, it is added, Ruth clave to her mother-in-law, all reasonings, remonstrances, dissuasives on Naomi's part notwithstanding.
