But Mordecai<MH4782> neither<MH3808> bowed<MH3766> down<MH3766> nor<MH3808> paid<MH2331c> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>homage<MH2331c>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/3-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Then the king’s<MH4428> servants<MH5650> who<MH834> were at the king’s<MH4428> gate<MH8179> said<MH559> to Mordecai<MH4782>, “Why<MH4069> are you violating<MH5674a> the king’s<MH4428> command<MH4687>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/3-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Now it was when they had spoken<MH559> daily<MH3117> to him and he would not listen<MH8085> to them, that they told<MH5046> Haman<MH2001b> to see<MH7200> whether Mordecai’s<MH4782> reason<MH1697> would <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>stand<MH5975>; for he had told<MH5046> them that he was a Jew<MH3064>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/3-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>When Haman<MH2001b> saw<MH7200> that Mordecai<MH4782> neither<MH369> bowed<MH3766> down<MH3766> nor<MH369> paid<MH2331c> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>homage<MH2331c> to him, Haman<MH2001b> was filled<MH4390> with rage<MH2534>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/3-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>considered<MH959, 5869> it beneath<MH959, 5869> his dignity<MH959, 5869> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>kill<MH7971, 3027> Mordecai<MH4782> alone<MH905>, for they had told<MH5046> him <i>who</i> the people<MH5971a> of Mordecai<MH4782> <i>were;</i> so Haman<MH2001b> sought<MH1245> to annihilate<MH8045> all<MH3605> the Jews<MH3064>, the people<MH5971a> of Mordecai<MH4782>, who<MH834> <i>were found</i> throughout<MH3605> the kingdom<MH4438> of Ahasuerus<MH325>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/3-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>In the first<MH7223> month<MH2320>, which<MH1931> is the month<MH2320> Nisan<MH5212>, in the twelfth<MH8147, 6240> year<MH8141> of King<MH4428> Ahasuerus<MH325>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>Pur<MH6332>, that is the lot<MH1486>, was cast<MH5307> before<MH6440> Haman<MH2001b> from day<MH3117> to day<MH3117> and from month<MH2320> <i>to month,</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>until the twelfth<MH8147, 6240> month<MH2320>, that is the month<MH2320> Adar<MH143>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/3-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then Haman<MH2001b> said<MH559> to King<MH4428> Ahasuerus<MH325>, “There<MH3426> is<MH3426> a certain<MH259> people<MH5971a> scattered<MH6340> and dispersed<MH6504> among<MH996> the peoples<MH5971a> in all<MH3605> the provinces<MH4082> of your kingdom<MH4438>; their laws<MH1881> are different<MH8132> from <i>those</i> of all<MH3605> <i>other</i> people<MH5971a> and they do not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>comply<MH6213a> with<MH6213a> the king’s<MH4428> laws<MH1881>, so it is not in the king’s<MH4428> interest<MH7737a> to let<MH5117> them remain<MH5117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/3-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>If<MH518> it is pleasing<MH2895> to the king<MH4428>, let it be <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>decreed<MH3789> that they be eliminated<MH6>, and I will pay<MH8254> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>ten<MH6235> thousand<MH505> talents<MH3603> of silver<MH3701> into the hands<MH3027> of those who carry<MH6213a> out<MH6213a> the <i>king’s</i> business<MH4399>, to put<MH935> into the king’s treasuries<MH1595>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/3-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> took<MH5493> his signet<MH2885> ring<MH2885> from his hand<MH3027> and gave<MH5414> it to Haman<MH2001b>, the son<MH1121> of Hammedatha<MH1992b> the Agagite<MH91>, the enemy<MH6887c> of the Jews<MH3064>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/3-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to Haman<MH2001b>, “The silver<MH3701> is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>yours<MH5414>, and the people<MH5971a> <i>also,</i> to do<MH6213a> with them as you please<MH2896a, 5869>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/3-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then the king’s<MH4428> scribes<MH5613b> were summoned<MH7121> on the thirteenth<MH7969, 6240> day<MH3117> of the first<MH7223> month<MH2320>, and it was written<MH3789> just<MH3605, 834> as Haman<MH2001b> commanded<MH6680> to the king’s<MH4428> satraps<MH323>, to the governors<MH6346> who<MH834> were over<MH5921> each<MH4082> province<MH4082> and to the officials<MH8269> of each<MH5971a> people<MH5971a>, each<MH4082> province<MH4082> according to its script<MH3791>, each<MH5971a> people<MH5971a> according to its language<MH3956>, being written<MH3789> in the name<MH8034> of King<MH4428> Ahasuerus<MH325> and sealed<MH2856> with the king’s<MH4428> signet<MH2885> ring<MH2885>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/3-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Letters<MH5612> were sent<MH7971> by couriers<MH7323> to all<MH3605> the king’s<MH4428> provinces<MH4082> to annihilate<MH8045>, kill<MH2026>, and destroy<MH6> all<MH3605> the Jews<MH3064>, both<MH4480> young<MH5288> and old<MH2205>, women<MH802> and children<MH2945>, in one<MH259> day<MH3117>, the thirteenth<MH7969, 6240> <i>day</i> of the twelfth<MH8147, 6240> month<MH2320>, which<MH1931> is the month<MH2320> Adar<MH143>, and to seize<MH962> their possessions<MH7998> as plunder<MH962>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/3-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>A copy<MH6572> of the edict<MH3791> to be <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>issued<MH5414> as law<MH1881> in every<MH3605> province<MH4082> was published<MH1540> to all<MH3605> the peoples<MH5971a> so that they would be ready<MH6264> for this<MH2088> day<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/3-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>The couriers<MH7323> went<MH3318> out<MH3318>, speeded<MH1765> by the king’s<MH4428> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>order<MH1697> while the decree<MH1881> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>issued<MH5414> at the citadel<MH1002> in Susa<MH7800>;
