</a> </p> <h4 class="title-section"><strong>Steps towards the creation of a Mediterranean Life Sciences Union (MedLIFE)</strong></h4> <p> <a href="https://association.med-life.org/" target="_blank">Mediterranean Life Sciences Union</a> (MedLIFE) aims to create a unique federation that brings together and represents the Mediterranean life sciences communities. Researchers from all fields of life sciences, both in the Mediterranean area and throughout the world, will be invited to join MedLIFE. </p> <p> MedLIFE intends to develop several initiatives that enable life scientists to perform transdisciplinary research with stakeholders. This can contribute to theory development since integrating academic and experiential knowledge from practice actors is considered vital to transforming towards sustainability. The new union is also hoped to provide opportunities for Mediterranean life scientists to undertake interdisciplinary collaborative research. As a result, the foundation of this union will offer life sciences more influence in policy-making and in the implementation of solutions to the most critical socioeconomic and environmental concerns. MedLIFE will recognize the work of the most active life scientists with awards and medals. </p> <p> The plan is to establish a large organization for the Mediterranean region that is more influential than any local life science society to foster fundamental and applied life sciences research that addresses critical societal and environmental issues and provides solutions for many global challenges posed by sustainable development. MedLIFE’s overarching vision is to contribute to realizing a sustainable future for humanity and the planet. </p> <p> The creation of this union will give the life sciences more influence in policy-making and in the implementation of solutions to preserve the natural environment and develop more sustainable societies for the people in the Mediterranean region. In this context, MedLIFE will serve as a worldwide platform for scientists of all disciplines and countries to collaborate and communicate to promote multidisciplinary joint research, training, and education as well as advocate for information and resource access and sharing. </p> <p> Although MedLIFE has not yet been officially inaugurated, its first annual meeting will be organized in December 2024 in Istanbul. This will provide a forum to achieve a consensus for forming this non-profit international union of life scientists. Membership will be open to individuals with professional engagement in life sciences and related studies, including students and retired seniors. </p> <p> The <a href="index.php?p=committees">MedLIFE Committees</a> have taken an ambitious approach to launching the MedLIFE-24 this year. They hope to develop it shortly into the largest international life science event in the Mediterranean and the broader Middle East region. The aim is to support life scientists in this part of the world that lacks bilateral and multilateral cooperation by organizing this global congress. It is expected that hundreds of participants from this region and all over the world will attend, making this meeting one of the largest and most prominent life sciences events. The meeting sessions will cover many topics, with more details on the <a href="index.php?p=tracks">Conference Tracks</a>. This MedLIFE-24 will have a "hybrid" format, with both in-person and virtual participation. They are recognised as role models for the upcoming generation of life scientists. Recipients of MedLIFE medals and awards will be nominated as MedLIFE ambassadors. In this capacity, they are tasked with representing MedLIFE at events organised by other organisations, as well as delivering speeches and presentations designated as MedLIFE contributions. Recipients of awards are selected by the track chairs based on evaluations by technical committee members and session chairs (see <a href="index.php?p=committees">Conference Committees</a>). Awards recognize outstanding works in each <a href="index.php?p=tracks">Conference Track</a> from the pool of accepted papers presented by authors in the in-person and online sessions. This proceedings paper will be peer reviewed after it has been checked for plagiarism using <a href="http://www.ithenticate.com/" target="_blank">iThenticate</a> software. If a plagiarism content is observed by the conference proceedings editors (see <a href="index.php?p=special-issue">Publications</a> and <a href="index.php?p=committees">Scientific Committee</a>), you will be asked to rewrite and resubmit it. If the resubmitted version is still more than 20% plagiarized, it will be rejected. </li> <li> We suggest taking this <a href="https://www.springernature.com/gp/editors/editor-courses/plagiarism#c18669950?utm_source=sn&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=RMarketing&utm_campaign=AEXS_4_SE01_GL_Editor_Tutorials_sn" target="_blank">Course on Plagiarism</a> to acquire useful skills in preventing plagiarism. This course, consisting of four modules, is free and offers a thorough introduction to the topic. </li> <li> To process your conference paper (extended abstract) on time and to ease the reviewer's tasks, we recommend you use free editing services such as <a href="https://www.grammarly.com/" target="_blank">Grammarly</a>. That way, the reviewers could concentrate on the science, not editing typos. This will also help us to publish the proceeding books much faster. </li> <li>After peer review and if the conference paper is accepted by the editors, you will be asked to revise and correct it. After resubmission of the revised version, the editors will re-check the paper for quality and plagiarism and, if accepted, the corresponding author will be requested to sign Springer’s Consent-to-Publish form, prerequisite for publication in the conference proceedings. Please note that there may be more than one round of peer review (see <a href="index.php?p=important-dates">Important Dates</a>). </li> <li>After evaluating all presentations during the conference and taking into account the comments of the reviewers and editors during the pre-conference evaluation process, the authors of the best papers will be invited after the conference to submit an extended version (8000 to 12000 words) of their conference papers for publication in a special issue of one of our partner journals (see <a href="index.php?p=special-issue">Publications</a>). Publishing your short paper in the conference proceedings does not prevent you from submitting the full version of the same work to one of our partner journals after the conference. </li> <li>Your proceedings (short) paper must be improved based on the conference review process and on the discussion at the conference. At least 60% of the material in the journal paper (full version) should be new and the exposition improved. In general, conference papers are based on preliminary results which are open for discussion. However, journal articles should contain finished research results with an in-depth discussion and clear conclusions. </li> <li>Authors of short papers accepted for publication in the proceedings and who do not plan to attend the conference or present online will not be invited to submit to the special issues. </li> <li>It will be possible to present accepted studies online without attending the conference in person. Authors can now submit their abstract and decide later whether they want to attend and present to the audience directly or simply present online.
