Now the stone<MH68> on the mouth<MH6310> of the well<MH875> was large<MH1419>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>When all<MH3605> the flocks<MH5739> were gathered<MH622> there<MH8033>, they would roll<MH1556> the stone<MH68> from the mouth<MH6310> of the well<MH875> and water<MH8248> the sheep<MH6629>. Then they would put<MH7725> the stone<MH68> back<MH7725> in its place<MH4725> on the mouth<MH6310> of the well<MH875>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Jacob<MH3290> said<MH559> to them, “My brothers<MH251>, where<MH370> are you from?” And they said<MH559>, “We are from Haran<MH2771a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>So he said<MH559> to them, “Do you know<MH3045> Laban<MH3837a> the son<MH1121> of Nahor<MH5152>?” And they said<MH559>, “We know<MH3045> <i>him.</i>” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And he said<MH559> to them, “Is it well<MH7965> with him?” And they said<MH559>, “It is well<MH7965>, and here<MH2009> is his daughter<MH1323> Rachel<MH7354> coming<MH935> with the sheep<MH6629>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559>, “Look<MH2005>, it is still<MH5750> high<MH1419> day<MH3117>; it is not time<MH6256> for the livestock<MH4735> to be gathered<MH622>. Water<MH8248> the sheep<MH6629>, and go<MH1980>, pasture<MH7462a> them.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But they said<MH559>, “We cannot<MH3201, 3808>, until<MH5704, 834> all<MH3605> the flocks<MH5739> are gathered<MH622>, and they roll<MH1556> the stone<MH68> from the mouth<MH6310> of the well<MH875>; then we water<MH8248> the sheep<MH6629>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>While he was still<MH5750> speaking<MH1696> with them, Rachel<MH7354> came<MH935> with her father’s<MH1> sheep<MH6629>, for she was a shepherdess<MH7462a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>When<MH3512c> Jacob<MH3290> saw<MH7200> Rachel<MH7354> the daughter<MH1323> of his mother’s<MH517> brother<MH251> Laban<MH3837a>, and the sheep<MH6629> of his mother’s<MH517> brother<MH251> Laban<MH3837a>, Jacob<MH3290> went<MH5066> up<MH5066> and rolled<MH1556> the stone<MH68> from the mouth<MH6310> of the well<MH875>, and watered<MH8248> the flock<MH6629> of his mother’s<MH517> brother<MH251> Laban<MH3837a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then Jacob<MH3290> kissed<MH5401a> Rachel<MH7354>, and raised<MH5375> his voice<MH6963> and wept<MH1058>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Jacob<MH3290> told<MH5046> Rachel<MH7354> that he was a relative<MH251> of her father<MH1> and that he was Rebekah’s<MH7259> son<MH1121>, and she ran<MH7323> and told<MH5046> her father<MH1>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>So when Laban<MH3837a> heard<MH8085> the news<MH8088> about Jacob<MH3290>, his sister’s<MH269> son<MH1121>, he ran<MH7323> to meet<MH7122> him, and embraced<MH2263> him and kissed<MH5401a> him, and brought<MH935> him to his house<MH1004>. Then he told<MH5608> Laban<MH3837a> all<MH3605> these<MH428> things<MH1697>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And Laban<MH3837a> said<MH559> to him, “You certainly<MH389> are my bone<MH6106> and my flesh<MH1320>.” And he stayed<MH3427> with him a month<MH2320>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then Laban<MH3837a> said<MH559> to Jacob<MH3290>, “Because<MH3588> you are my relative<MH251>, should you therefore serve<MH5647> me for<MH2600> nothing<MH2600>? Tell<MH5046> me, what<MH4100> shall your wages<MH4909> be?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Now Laban<MH3837a> had two<MH8147> daughters<MH1323>; the name<MH8034> of the older<MH1419> was Leah<MH3812>, and the name<MH8034> of the younger<MH6996a> was Rachel<MH7354>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And Leah’s<MH3812> eyes<MH5869> were weak<MH7390>, but Rachel<MH7354> was beautiful<MH3303> in figure<MH8389> and appearance<MH4758>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now Jacob<MH3290> loved<MH157> Rachel<MH7354>, so he said<MH559>, “I will serve<MH5647> you seven<MH7651> years<MH8141> for your younger<MH6996a> daughter<MH1323> Rachel<MH7354>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Laban<MH3837a> said<MH559>, “It is better<MH2896a> that I give<MH5414> her to you than<MH4480> to give<MH5414> her to another<MH312> man<MH376>; stay<MH3427> with me.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>So Jacob<MH3290> served<MH5647> seven<MH7651> years<MH8141> for Rachel<MH7354>, and they seemed<MH1961, 5869> to him like <i>only</i> a few<MH259> days<MH3117> because of his love<MH160> for her. <p class="hdg">Laban’s Treachery</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then Jacob<MH3290> said<MH559> to Laban<MH3837a>, “Give<MH3051> <i>me</i> my wife<MH802>, for my <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>time<MH3117> is completed<MH4390>, that I may have<MH935> relations<MH935> with<MH935> her.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>So Laban<MH3837a> gathered<MH622> all<MH3605> the people<MH376> of the place<MH4725> and held<MH6213a> a feast<MH4960>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Now in the evening<MH6153> he took<MH3947> his daughter<MH1323> Leah<MH3812> and brought<MH935> her to him; and <i>Jacob</i> had<MH935> relations<MH935> with<MH935> her. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Laban<MH3837a> also gave<MH5414> his female<MH8198> slave<MH8198> Zilpah<MH2153> to his daughter<MH1323> Leah<MH3812> as a slave<MH8198>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>So it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> in the morning<MH1242> that, behold<MH2009>, it was Leah<MH3812>! And he said<MH559> to Laban<MH3837a>, “What<MH4100> is this<MH2088> <i>that</i> you have done<MH6213a> to me? Was it not for Rachel<MH7354> that I served<MH5647> with you? Why<MH4100> then have you deceived<MH7411b> me?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>But Laban<MH3837a> said<MH559>, “It is not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>the practice<MH6213a, 3651> in our place<MH4725> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>marry<MH5414> off<MH5414> the younger<MH6810> before<MH6440> the firstborn<MH1067>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Complete<MH4390> the week<MH7620> of this<MH2088> one<MH2088>, and we will give<MH5414> you the other<MH2088> also<MH1571> for the service<MH5656> which<MH834> you shall serve<MH5647> with me, for another<MH312> seven<MH7651> years<MH8141>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Jacob<MH3290> did<MH6213a> so<MH3651> and completed<MH4390> her week<MH7620>, and he gave<MH5414> him his daughter<MH1323> Rachel<MH7354> as his wife<MH802>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Laban<MH3837a> also gave<MH5414> his female<MH8198> slave<MH8198> Bilhah<MH1090a> to his daughter<MH1323> Rachel<MH7354> as her slave<MH8198>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>So <i>Jacob</i> had<MH935> relations<MH935> with<MH935> Rachel<MH7354> also<MH1571>, and indeed<MH1571> he loved<MH157> Rachel<MH7354> more<MH4480> than<MH4480> Leah<MH3812>, and he served<MH5647> with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Laban for another<MH312> seven<MH7651> years<MH8141>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Now the LORD<MH3068> saw<MH7200> that Leah<MH3812> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>unloved<MH8130>, and He opened<MH6605a> her womb<MH7358>, but Rachel<MH7354> was unable<MH6135> to<MH6135> have<MH6135> children<MH6135>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Leah<MH3812> conceived<MH2029> and gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to a son<MH1121>, and named<MH7121, 8034> him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>Reuben<MH7205>, for she said<MH559>, “Because<MH3588> the LORD<MH3068> has <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>seen<MH7200> my affliction<MH6040a>; surely<MH3588> now<MH6258> my husband<MH376> will love<MH157> me.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Then she conceived<MH2029> again<MH5750> and gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to a son<MH1121>, and said<MH559>, “Because<MH3588> the LORD<MH3068> has <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>heard<MH8085> that I am <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>unloved<MH8130>, He has therefore given<MH5414> me this<MH2088> <i>son</i> also<MH1571>.” So she named<MH7121, 8034> him Simeon<MH8095>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And she conceived<MH2029> again<MH5750> and gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to a son<MH1121>, and said<MH559>, “Now<MH6258> this<MH6471> time<MH6471> my husband<MH376> will become<MH3867a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>attached<MH3867a> to me, because<MH3588> I have borne<MH3205> him three<MH7969> sons<MH1121>.” Therefore<MH5921, 3651> he was named<MH7121, 8034> Levi<MH3878>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/29-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And she conceived<MH2029> again<MH5750> and gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to a son<MH1121>, and said<MH559>, “This<MH6471> time<MH6471> I will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>praise<MH3034> the LORD<MH3068>.” Therefore<MH5921, 3651> she named<MH7121, 8034> him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>Judah<MH3063>.
