Indologists, such as the German <span id="ref485101"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/Max-Muller" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Max Müller</a>, relied heavily on the Sanskritic tradition and saw Indian society as an <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="idyllic" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/idyllic" data-type="MW">idyllic</a> village <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="culture" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/culture" data-type="MW">culture</a> emphasizing qualities of passivity, meditation, and otherworldliness. In sharp contrast was the approach of the Scottish historian <span id="ref485102"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/biography/James-Mill" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">James Mill</a> and the <span id="ref485103"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/utilitarianism-philosophy" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Utilitarians</a>, who condemned Indian culture as irrational and <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="inimical" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/inimical" data-type="MW">inimical</a> to human progress. Mill first formulated a periodization of Indian history into Hindu, Muslim, and British periods, a scheme that, while still commonly used, is now controversial. During the 19th century, direct contact with Indian institutions through administration, together with the utilization of new evidence from recently deciphered inscriptions, numismatics, and local archives, provided fresh insights. Nationalist Indian historians of the early 20th century tended to exaggerate the glory of the past but nevertheless introduced controversy into historical interpretation, which in turn resulted in more precise studies of Indian institutions. In more recent times, historians have reconstructed in greater detail the social, economic, and cultural history of the subcontinent—though politics has continued to influence the study of Indian history.</p><span class="marker MOD1 mod-inline"></span> <span class="marker PREMOD2 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph">A major change in the interpretation of Indian history has been a questioning of an older <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off eb" data-term="notion" href="https://www.britannica.com/dictionary/notion" data-type="EB">notion</a> of Oriental despotism as the determining force. Arising out of a traditional European perspective on <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Asia" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Asia</a>, this image of despotism grew to vast proportions in the 19th century and provided an <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="intellectual" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/intellectual" data-type="MW">intellectual</a> justification for colonialism and imperialism. Its deterministic assumptions clouded the understanding of early interrelationships among Indian political forms, economic patterns, and social structures.</p><span class="marker MOD2 mod-inline"></span> </section> <section data-level="3" id="ref273189"> <h2 class="h3">Trends in early Indian society</h2> <span class="marker PREMOD3 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph">A considerable change is noticeable during this period in the role of institutions. Clan-based societies had assemblies, whose political role changed with the transformation of tribe into state and with oligarchic and monarchical governments. <span id="ref485104"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/centralization" class="md-crosslink ">Centralized</a> imperialism, which was attempted under the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Mauryan-Empire" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Mauryan empire</a> (c. 325–185 <span class="text-smallcaps">bce</span>), gave way gradually to decentralized administration and to what has been called a feudalistic pattern in the post-Gupta period—i.e., from the 7th century <span class="text-smallcaps">ce</span>. Although the village as an administrative and social unit remained constant, its relationship with the mainstream of history varied. The concept of <span id="ref485105"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/sacred-kingship" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">divine kingship</a> was known but rarely taken seriously, the claim to the status of the caste of royalty becoming more important. Because conformity to the social order had <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="precedence" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/precedence" data-type="MW">precedence</a> over <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="allegiance" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/allegiance" data-type="MW">allegiance</a> to the state, the idea of representation found expression not so much in political institutions as in caste and village assemblies. The pendulum of politics swung from large to small kingdoms, with the former attempting to establish empires—the sole successful attempt being that of the Mauryan <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="dynasty" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/dynasty" data-type="MW">dynasty</a>. Thus, true centralization was rare, because local forces often determined historical events. Although imperial or near-imperial periods were marked by attempts at the evolution of uniform <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="cultures" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cultures" data-type="MW">cultures</a>, the periods of smaller kingdoms (often referred to as the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/event/Dark-Ages" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Dark Ages</a> by earlier historians) were more creative at the local level and witnessed significant changes in society and religion. These small kingdoms also often boasted the most elaborate and impressive monuments.</p><span class="marker MOD3 mod-inline"></span> <span class="marker PREMOD4 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph">The major economic patterns were those relating to <span id="ref485106"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/land-tenure" class="md-crosslink ">land</a> and to commerce. The transition from tribal to <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/peasantry" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">peasant society</a> was a continuing process, with the gradual clearing of wasteland and the expansion of the village economy based on plow agriculture. Recognition of the importance of land revenue coincided with the emergence of the imperial system in the 4th century <span class="text-smallcaps">bce</span>; and from this period onward, although the imperial structure did not last long, land revenue became central to the administration and income of the state. Frequent mentions of individual ownership, references to crown lands, numerous land grants to religious and <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="secular" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/secular" data-type="MW">secular</a> grantees in the post-Gupta period, and detailed discussion in legal sources of the rights of purchase, <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="bequest" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/bequest" data-type="MW">bequest</a>, and sale of land all clearly indicate that private ownership of land existed. Much emphasis has been laid on the state control of the <span id="ref485107"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/technology/irrigation" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">irrigation</a> system; yet a systematic study of irrigation in India reveals that it was generally <span id="ref485108"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/private-property" class="md-crosslink ">privately controlled</a> and that it serviced small areas of land. (<em>See</em> <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/hydraulic-civilization" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">hydraulic civilization</a>.) When the state built <span id="ref485109"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/technology/canal-waterway" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">canals</a>, they were mainly in the areas affected by both the winter and summer monsoons, in which village assemblies played a dominant part in revenue and general administration, as, for example, in the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Chola-dynasty" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Cola (Chola) kingdom</a> of southern India.</p><span class="marker MOD4 mod-inline"></span> <span class="marker PREMOD5 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph">The <span id="ref485110"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/urbanization" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">urban</a> economy was crucial to the rise of civilization in the Indus valley (c. 2600–2000 <span class="text-smallcaps">bce</span>). Later the 1st <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off eb" data-term="millennium" href="https://www.britannica.com/dictionary/millennium" data-type="EB">millennium</a> <span class="text-smallcaps">bce</span> saw an urban civilization in the Ganges (Ganga) valley and still later in coastal south India. The emergence of <span id="ref485111"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/town" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">towns</a> was based on administrative needs, the requirements of trade, and pilgrimage centers. In the 1st millennium <span class="text-smallcaps">ce</span>, when commerce expanded to include trade with western Asia, the eastern Mediterranean, and Central and <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Southeast-Asia" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Southeast Asia</a>, revenue from trade contributed substantially to the economies of the participating kingdoms, as indeed Indian religion and culture played a significant part in the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/cultural-evolution" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">cultural evolution</a> of Central and Southeast Asia. <span id="ref485112"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/gold-chemical-element" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Gold</a> coins were issued for the first time by the <span id="ref485113"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Kushan-dynasty" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Kushan dynasty</a> and in large quantity by the <span id="ref485114"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Gupta-dynasty" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Guptas</a>; both kingdoms were active in <a href="https://www.britannica.com/money/international-trade" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">foreign trade</a>. Gold was imported from <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Central-Asia" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Central Asia</a> and the Roman Republic and Empire and later perhaps from <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/eastern-Africa" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">eastern Africa</a> because, in <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off eb" data-term="spite" href="https://www.britannica.com/dictionary/spite" data-type="EB">spite</a> of India’s recurring association with gold, its sources were limited. Expanding trade encouraged the opening up of new routes, and this, coupled with the expanding village economy, led to a marked increase of knowledge about the subcontinent during the post-Mauryan period. With increasing trade, <span id="ref485115"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/guild-trade-association" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">guilds</a> became more powerful in the towns. Members of the guilds participated in the administration, were associated with politics, and controlled the development of trade through merchant embassies sent to places as far afield as Rome and <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/China" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">China</a>. Not least, guilds and merchant associations held envied and respectable positions as donors of religious institutions.</p><div class="module-spacing"> </div><span class="marker MOD5 mod-inline"></span> <span class="marker PREMOD6 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph">The structure of Indian society was characterized by <span id="ref485116"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/caste-social-differentiation" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">caste</a>. The distinguishing features of a caste society were endogamous kinship groups (<span id="ref485117"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/jati-Hindu-caste-system" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true"><em>jati</em></a>s) arranged in a <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="hierarchy" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/hierarchy" data-type="MW">hierarchy</a> of ritual ranking, based on notions of pollution and purity, with an intermeshing of service relationships and an <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="adherence" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/adherence" data-type="MW">adherence</a> to geographic location. There was some coincidence between caste and access to economic resources. Although ritual hierarchy was unchanging, there appears to have been mobility within the framework. Migrations of peoples both within the subcontinent and from outside encouraged <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/social-mobility" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">social mobility</a> and change. The nucleus of the social structure was the family, with the pattern of kinship relations varying from region to region. In the more complex urban structure, occupational guilds occasionally took on <em>jati</em> functions, and there was a continual emergence of new social and professional groups.</p><span class="marker MOD6 mod-inline"></span> <span class="marker PREMOD7 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph">Religion in early Indian history did not <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="constitute" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/constitute" data-type="MW">constitute</a> a <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="monolithic" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/monolithic" data-type="MW">monolithic</a> force. Even when the royalty attempted to encourage certain religions, the idea of a state religion was absent. In the main, there were three levels of religious expression. The most widespread was the worship of local cult deities vaguely associated with major deities, as seen in <span id="ref485118"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/fertility-cult" class="md-crosslink ">fertility cults</a>, in the worship of <span id="ref485119"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/mother-goddess" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">mother goddesses</a>, in the Shakta-Shakti cult, and in Tantrism. Less widespread but popular, particularly in the urban areas, were the more puritanical sects of <span id="ref975774"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Buddhism" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Buddhism</a> and <span id="ref975775"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Jainism" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Jainism</a> and the <em>bhakti</em> tradition of <span id="ref975776"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Hinduism" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Hinduism</a>. A third level included classical Hinduism and more abstract levels of Buddhism and Jainism, with an emphasis on the major deities in the case of the first and on the teachings of the founders in the case of the latter two. It was this level, <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="endorsed" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/endorsed" data-type="MW">endorsed</a> by <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="affluent" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/affluent" data-type="MW">affluent</a> patronage, that provided the base for the initial institutionalization of religion. But the three levels were not isolated; the shadow of the third fell over the first two, the more homely rituals and beliefs of which often crept into the third. This was the case particularly with Hinduism, the very flexibility of which was largely responsible for its survival. Forms of Buddhism, ranging from an emphasis on the constant refinement of doctrine on the one hand to an incorporation of magical fertility cults in its beliefs on the other, faded out toward the end of this period.</p><span class="marker MOD7 mod-inline"></span> <span class="marker PREMOD8 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph"><span id="ref485123"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/art/Sanskrit-literature" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Sanskrit literature</a> and the building of Hindu and Buddhist temples and sculpture both reached <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="apogees" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/apogees" data-type="MW">apogees</a> in this period. Although literary works in the <span id="ref485124"></span><a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Sanskrit-language" class="md-crosslink " data-show-preview="true">Sanskrit language</a> continued to be written and temples were built in later periods, the achievement was never again as inspiring.</p><span class="marker MOD8 mod-inline"></span> </section> <section data-level="3" id="ref46841"> <h2 class="h3">From c. 1500 to c. 500 <span class="text-smallcaps">bce</span></h2> <span class="marker PREMOD9 mod-inline"></span><p class="topic-paragraph">By about 1500 <span class="text-smallcaps">bce</span> an important change began to occur in the northern half of the <a href="https://www.britannica.com/place/Indian-subcontinent" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Indian subcontinent</a>. The <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Indus-civilization" class="md-crosslink autoxref " data-show-preview="true">Indus civilization</a> had declined by about 2000 <span class="text-smallcaps">bce</span> (or perhaps as late as 1750 <span class="text-smallcaps">bce</span>), and the stage was being set for a second and more lasting urbanization in the Ganges valley. The new areas of occupation were <a class="md-dictionary-link md-dictionary-tt-off mw" data-term="contiguous" href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/contiguous" data-type="MW">contiguous</a> with and sometimes overlapping the core of the Harappan area.
