The recipes used in the traditional treatment of malaria resort to different combinations of plants with anti-plasmodial, antipyretic, analgesic and anti-anemic properties. Anti-anemic plants are poorly documented in Togo. Aim of the study: The objective of this work was to record the plants species used to treat malaria anemia in the Maritime Region of Togo. Materials and Methods: Two complementary methods of ethnopharmacological investigation were used: The Triplet Purchase of Medicinal Recipes (ATRM) applied in 17 sales markets and the Semi Structured Interview (SSI) conducted with traditional healers in the study area. Results: In total, 206 recipes including 102 from 34 market herbalists and 104 from 54 traditional healers were obtained. These recipes are composed of 75 plant species. They belong to 37 botanical families, of which the most represented are Fabaceae, Malvaceae, Anacardiaceae, Annonaceae, Bignoniaceae and Euphorbiaceae. The most cited species were Lannea kerstingii (39.32%), Sorghum caudatum var. colorans (32.04%), Indigofera pulchra (16.50%), Uvaria chamae (16.02%), Jatropha gossipifolia (15.04%), Cymbopogon citratus (13.59%), Khaya senegalensis (12.62%)%), Hibiscus surattensis (10.19%). Indigofera pulchra, Lannea kerstingii, Manihot esculenta and Occimum gratissimum were selected for future laboratory tests. Conclusion: The current results revealed that Togolese traditional medicine has various plants species that could be used to produce improved traditional medicines for an effective management of malaria anemia.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Innovationinfo In Cameroon it is one of the diseases which cause serious concerns to the support health authorities. The increase level of malaria parasite drug resistance, the high cost of those drugs and their several side effects, have led to a gradual loss of faith in the modern drugs and confidence in the use of herbs in the treatment of malaria. Hence the use of plants, herbs and other natural substances to cure malaria and many other ailments has been on increase in Cameroon, and mostly in the rural areas. For many centuries, locally prepared decoctions have been in use for the treatment of malaria. This ethnobotanical study has revealed that 46 plants belonging to 32 families are currently used in the Menoua division, Western Cameroon, to treat malaria. The Asteraceae, Liliaceae and Malvaceae families (3 plants each) were dominant. Ethno-botanical data were collected by oral interview with the aid of a semi-structured questionnaire administered to forty-seven (47) herb sellers. The respondents were aware of the signs and symptoms of malaria and could readily distinguish the ailments from other feverish symptoms and conditions. Symptoms reported include body weakness, high body temperature (hot skin), loss of appetite, coldness, mouth bitterness, headache, coloured eyes (yellow), sleepless night and urine colouration (yellowish). From the study, a total of thirteen (13) plant species belonging to nine (9) families including Aannonaceae, Aapocynaceae, Rrubiaceae, Oochnaaceae were described as being used for the treatment of malaria. The plant parts used were leaves, root, stem bark and seed with roots being the most used plant part. Materials and methods: The survey was carried out from May 2008 to September 2010 and targeted traditional medical practitioners and herbalists. The questionnaire and oral interviews were based on the standardized model which was prepared by the “Centre de Recherche et de Valorisation des Plantes Médicinales (CRVPM) – Dubréka”. Results and discussion: A total of 258 people (141males and117 females) from which150 traditional healers and108 herbalists were interviewed. The age of informants ranged from 28 to 82 years old.57% (149/258) of the interviewees were morethan50 years old. The respondents had good knowledge of the symptoms of malaria, and a fairly good understanding of the causes. One hundred thirteen plant species were recorded, out of which109 were identified. They belonged to 84 genera and 46 families. The most frequently cited plants were Vismia guineensis, Parkia biglobosa, Nauclea latifolia,Harungana madagascar- iensis, Terminalia macroptera, Crossopteryx febrifuga, Terminalia albida, Annona senegalensis, and Nauclea pobeguinii. The leaves were most frequently used (80/113species), followed by stem bark (38/113 species) and roots (4/113species).The remedies were mostly prepared by decoction (111species), followed by maceration (seven species).Only one species was prepared by infusion. Conclusion: The present study showed that traditional healers in Guinea have a consistent knowledge of anti malarial plants. Further research should be carried out to compare the anti-malarial activity of the different species, and to check if their use against malaria can be scientifically validated.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Ethnobotanical survey on medicinal plants used by Guinean traditional healers in the treatment of malaria","attachmentId":38445165,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/14850414/Ethnobotanical_survey_on_medicinal_plants_used_by_Guinean_traditional_healers_in_the_treatment_of_malaria","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Phytochemical screening of some medicinal plants used to treat malaria in Côte d'Ivoire (West Africa)
TUO KARIM

2014

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Phytochemical screening of some medicinal plants used to treat malaria in Côte d'Ivoire (West Africa)","attachmentId":81874802,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/73302109/Phytochemical_screening_of_some_medicinal_plants_used_to_treat_malaria_in_C%C3%B4te_dIvoire_West_Africa_","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Ethnobotanical Study of Medicinal Plants Used for the Treatment of Malaria in Nupeland, North Central Nigeria
Abdulkadir Nda Umar

2014

In Nigeria, most people use traditional medicine especially medicinal plants to treat many diseases including malaria. It is of national concern in view of development of resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum to drugs. There is a need for alternative and affordable therapy. Many antimalarial drugs have been derived from medicinal plants traditionally used to treat malaria. There is a long standing tradition of herbal medicine being used for the treatment of signs and symptoms of malaria amongst Nupe community. Ethno-botanical survey of plants used in the treatment of malaria in Nupeland was carried out between July 2012 and June 2013. The survey covered ten Nupe speaking Local Government Areas of Nigeria; eight in Niger State and two in Kwara State. Semistructured questionnaires were used.
