<span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>and to those<MG1565> he said<MG3004>, ‘You go<MG5217> into the vineyard<MG290> also<MG2532>, and whatever<MG3739, 1437> is right<MG1342>, I will give<MG1325> you.’ And <i>so</i> they went<MG565>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Again<MG3825> he went<MG1831> out<MG1831> about<MG4012> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>sixth<MG1623> and the ninth<MG1729a> hour<MG5610>, and did<MG4160> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>the same<MG5615> thing<MG5615>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And about<MG4012> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>eleventh<MG1734> <i>hour</i> he went<MG1831> out<MG1831> and found<MG2147> others<MG243> standing<MG2476> <i>around;</i> and he *said<MG3004> to them, ‘Why<MG5101> have you been standing<MG2476> here<MG5602> idle<MG692> all<MG3650> day<MG2250> long<MG3650>?’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>They *said<MG3004> to him, ‘Because<MG3754> no<MG3762> one<MG3762> hired<MG3409> us.’ He *said<MG3004> to them, ‘You go<MG5217> into the vineyard<MG290> too<MG2532>.’ <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>“Now<MG1161> when evening<MG3798> came<MG1096>, the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>owner<MG2962> of the vineyard<MG290> *said<MG3004> to his foreman<MG2012>, ‘Call<MG2564> the laborers<MG2040> and pay<MG591> them their wages<MG3408>, starting<MG757> with the last<MG2078> <i>group</i> to the first<MG4413>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>When<MG2532> those<MG3588> <i>hired</i> about<MG4012> the eleventh<MG1734> hour<MG5610> came<MG2064>, each<MG303> one<MG303> received<MG2983> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>denarius<MG1220>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And <i>so</i> when those<MG3588> <i>hired</i> first<MG4413> came<MG2064>, they thought<MG3543> that they would receive<MG2983> more<MG4183>; <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>but each<MG303> of them also<MG2532> received<MG2983> a denarius<MG1220>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>When they received<MG2983> it, they grumbled<MG1111> at the landowner<MG3617>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>saying<MG3004>, ‘These<MG3778> who <i>were hired</i> last<MG2078> worked<MG4160> <i>only</i> one<MG1520> hour<MG5610>, and you have made<MG4160> them equal<MG2470> to us who<MG3588> have borne<MG941> the burden<MG922> of the day’s<MG2250> <i>work</i> and the scorching<MG2742> heat<MG2742>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>But he answered<MG611> and said<MG3004> to one<MG1520> of them, ‘Friend<MG2083>, I am doing<MG91> you no<MG3756> wrong<MG91>; did you not agree<MG4856> with me for a denarius<MG1220>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Take<MG142> what<MG3588> is yours<MG4674> and go<MG5217>; but I want<MG2309> to give<MG1325> to this<MG3778> last<MG2078> person<MG2078> the same<MG2532> as to you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Is it not lawful<MG1832> for me to do<MG4160> what<MG3739> I want<MG2309> with what<MG3588> is my own<MG1699>? Or<MG2228> is your eye<MG3788> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>envious<MG4190> because<MG3754> I am<MG1510> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>generous<MG18>?’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So<MG3779> the last<MG2078> shall be first<MG4413>, and the first<MG4413>, last<MG2078>.” <p class="hdg">Death, Resurrection Foretold</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>As Jesus<MG2424> was<MG3195> about<MG3195> to<MG3195> go<MG305> up<MG305> to Jerusalem<MG2414>, He took<MG3880> the twelve<MG1427> <i>disciples</i> aside by themselves<MG2398>, and on the road<MG3598> He said<MG3004> to them, <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>“Behold<MG2400>, we are going<MG305> up<MG305> to Jerusalem<MG2414>, and the Son<MG5207> of Man<MG444> will be <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>handed<MG3860> over<MG3860> to the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> and scribes<MG1122>, and they will condemn<MG2632> Him to death<MG2288>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>and they will hand<MG3860> Him over<MG3860> to the Gentiles<MG1484> to mock<MG1702> and flog<MG3146> and crucify<MG4717>, and on the third<MG5154> day<MG2250> He will be raised<MG1453> up<MG1453>.” <p class="hdg">Request for Preferred Treatment</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> the mother<MG3384> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>sons<MG5207> of Zebedee<MG2199> came<MG4334> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>Jesus with her sons<MG5207>, bowing<MG4352> down<MG4352> and making<MG154> a request<MG154> of Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And He said<MG3004> to her, “What<MG5101> do you desire<MG2309>?” She *said<MG3004> to Him, “Say<MG3004> that in Your kingdom<MG932> these<MG3778> two<MG1417> sons<MG5207> of mine<MG1473> shall sit<MG2523>, one<MG1520> at Your right<MG1188>, and one<MG1520> at Your left<MG2176>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>But Jesus<MG2424> replied<MG611, 3004>, “You do not know<MG3609a> what<MG5101> you are asking<MG154>. Are you able<MG1410> to drink<MG4095> the cup<MG4221> that I am<MG3195> about<MG3195> to<MG3195> drink<MG4095>?” They *said<MG3004> to Him, “We are able<MG1410>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>He *said<MG3004> to them, “My cup<MG4221> you shall drink<MG4095>; but to sit<MG2523> at My right<MG1188> and at <i>My</i> left<MG2176> is not Mine<MG1699> to give<MG1325>, but <i>it is for those</i> for whom<MG3739> it has been prepared<MG2090> by My Father<MG3962>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And after hearing<MG191> <i>this,</i> the <i>other</i> ten<MG1176> <i>disciples</i> became indignant<MG23> with the two<MG1417> brothers<MG80>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>But Jesus<MG2424> called<MG4341> them to Himself and said<MG3004>, “You know<MG3609a> that the rulers<MG758> of the Gentiles<MG1484> domineer<MG2634b> over<MG2634b> them, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>those in high<MG3173> position<MG3173> exercise<MG2715> authority<MG2715> over<MG2715> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>It <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>is not this<MG3779> way<MG3779> among<MG1722> you, but whoever<MG3739, 1437> wants<MG2309> to become<MG1096> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>prominent<MG3173> among<MG1722> you shall be your servant<MG1249>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>and whoever<MG3739, 1437> desires<MG2309> to be first<MG4413> among<MG1722> you shall be your slave<MG1401>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>just<MG5618> as the Son<MG5207> of Man<MG444> did not come<MG2064> to be served<MG1247>, but to serve<MG1247>, and to give<MG1325> His <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>life<MG5590> as a ransom<MG3083> for many<MG4183>.” <p class="hdg">Sight for Those Who Are Blind</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>As they were leaving<MG1607> Jericho<MG2410a>, a large<MG4183> crowd<MG3793> followed<MG190> Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And two<MG1417> people<MG5185> who<MG5185> were<MG5185> blind<MG5185>, sitting<MG2521> by the road<MG3598>, hearing<MG191> that Jesus<MG2424> was passing<MG3855> by, cried<MG2896> out<MG2896>, “Lord<MG2962>, have<MG1653> mercy<MG1653> on us, Son<MG5207> of David<MG1160b>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>But the crowd<MG3793> sternly<MG2008> warned<MG2008> them to be quiet<MG4623>; yet<MG1161> they cried<MG2896> out<MG2896> all<MG3173> the<MG3173> more<MG3173>, “Lord<MG2962>, Son<MG5207> of David<MG1160b>, have<MG1653> mercy<MG1653> on us!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And Jesus<MG2424> stopped<MG2476> and called<MG5455> them, and said<MG3004>, “What<MG5101> do you want<MG2309> Me to do<MG4160> for you?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>They *said<MG3004> to Him, “Lord<MG2962>, <i>we want</i> our eyes<MG3788> to be opened<MG455>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Moved<MG4697> with<MG4697> compassion<MG4697>, Jesus<MG2424> touched<MG681> their eyes<MG3659>;
