Artists have, for centuries, come ever closer to capturing the fullness of the human form, a pursuit marked by traditions such as the drawing room, and even the continuation of anatomy classes in schools such as the Ruskin. Now being explored in ever more diverse manners, the role of the body, through traditions such as performance art, has pushed beyond subject, becoming a medium and tool. With this new tradition, artists are able to push the limits of representation and experience in new and innovative ways. For some artists, this can mean confronting us with our own vulnerability through use of human tissues in a fragmentation of the body that can frighten and repel us. In the writings of Jacques Lacan, the real refers to the neo-natal state, which is limitless and driven by needs. Lacan notes that sometimes, when forced to acknowledge the corporeal nature of our existence, the real erupts, resulting in traumatic feelings. Similarly, Kristeva defines the abject as "that which disturbs identity;" 1 the abject does not respect borders-it exists in liminal spaces, confusing definitions and disrupting order. The abject causes a breakdown in meaning between two states which we respond to violently and physically in feelings of disgust and often fear. Examining the work of artists such as Margolles, Quinn, and Zurr, this essay will seek to analyse the ways in which use of human tissues can face us with the abject and the body of the real, as defined by philosophers Lacan and Kristeva.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Exploring the ways through which use of human bodies and tissues in art can expose us to the abject and the body of the real","attachmentId":61234598,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/40946349/Exploring_the_ways_through_which_use_of_human_bodies_and_tissues_in_art_can_expose_us_to_the_abject_and_the_body_of_the_real","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/40946349/Exploring_the_ways_through_which_use_of_human_bodies_and_tissues_in_art_can_expose_us_to_the_abject_and_the_body_of_the_real"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="1" data-entity-id="32412714" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/32412714/_The_Obsolete_Body_What_can_the_deliberate_alteration_of_the_human_form_in_the_work_of_Stelarc_tell_us_about_the_way_we_view_the_body_today">‘The Obsolete Body?’: What can the deliberate alteration of the human form in the work of Stelarc, tell us about the way we view the body today?</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="23482662" href="https://gordon.academia.edu/SMaleachi">Shalom Maleachi</a></div><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"‘The Obsolete Body?’: What can the deliberate alteration of the human form in the work of Stelarc, tell us about the way we view the body today?","attachmentId":52609740,"attachmentType":"docx","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/32412714/_The_Obsolete_Body_What_can_the_deliberate_alteration_of_the_human_form_in_the_work_of_Stelarc_tell_us_about_the_way_we_view_the_body_today","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/32412714/_The_Obsolete_Body_What_can_the_deliberate_alteration_of_the_human_form_in_the_work_of_Stelarc_tell_us_about_the_way_we_view_the_body_today"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="2" data-entity-id="69045991" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/69045991/Stelarc_On_the_Body_as_an_Artistic_Material">Stelarc: On the Body as an Artistic Material</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="469447" href="https://aalborg.academia.edu/StahlStenslie">Stahl Stenslie</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">2015</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">In this dialogue with Stahl Stenslie, Stelarc discusses his use of the body as an artistic material. They were made by the anatomist Giuseppe Salerno in the mid-18 th century and presented as the result of anatomical preparations based on a technique known as &quot;anatomical injection&quot; (injection of embalming substances in cadavers). Sansevero&#39;s anatomical machines have gradually become the subject of a legend, according to which the models were the outcome of an operation of human vivisection in which a woman and a man were killed through the injection of embalming substances in their blood vessels. This paper examines the human body in art contexts where biotechnology plays a relevant role in the generation of new conceptualizations around the human body topic. Thus, re-contextualized in social and cultural spheres and technical terms, the body will become redesigned, revamped, or augmented through the use of technological advances ranging from plastic surgery to robotic prosthetics. The human body is our vehicle of direct interaction with the environment. Its modification, alteration or expansion implies a redefinition of the existing limits between our corporality and the environment itself. Not only in the physical sense, but metaphysical and social. Hence, the introduced artists and strategies blur these limits and establish new relations through the body as a physical and social entity. In the search of new boundaries far beyond socio-cultural and natural limitations, they will reach new social, perceptual and conceptual statuses, far beyond aesthetic practices, focusing on the generation of political and social debates.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"The human body from a biotechnological perspective in art contexts: active space of experimentation in constant transformation","attachmentId":107456581,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/109204013/The_human_body_from_a_biotechnological_perspective_in_art_contexts_active_space_of_experimentation_in_constant_transformation","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/109204013/The_human_body_from_a_biotechnological_perspective_in_art_contexts_active_space_of_experimentation_in_constant_transformation"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="6" data-entity-id="32799025" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/32799025/Stelarc_and_the_posthuman_body_performance_in_contemporary_art">Stelarc and the posthuman body performance in contemporary art</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="25223334" href="https://vern.academia.edu/LidijaFistrek">Lidija Fistrek</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">In this paper, I endeavoured to display the performance of the post human body in the art performances of contemporary artist Arthur Stelarc. The post human body is increasingly becoming the focus of interest in the fields of philosophy, techno-science, art and bio-politics. The term bio-politics took on a central role in the wide interdisciplinary field of the humanities at the beginning of the 21st century. A condensed interpretation of the definition of bio-politics is aimed at health policies and demographics, ecology and questions regarding the future of humanity. Foucault’s bio-politics is one of premonitions of cyborg politics - a very open field. The cyborg is not a subject of Foucault’s bio-politics, but rather, it simulates politics. Because of science, the body becomes immortal, it changes its status into post human. It exceeds all the limits of the human mind in an endless search for change and perfection. The body loses its identity, it becomes a fragmented body as Lacan calls it, and is in the end completely transformed. The metamorphosis that the body goes through has drastically changed since its very creation and original purpose. However, these changes exist exclusively within the frame of radical feminism, art, science and philosophy. When talking about the mechanical body, we imagine a mechanical machine, made from metal or some other alloy, operated by an engine. The mechanical body I am discussing is the product of science and technology, in line with the progress of the contemporary era. Modern medicine is working on uniting the human organism with machines, creating a coded device - more intimate and powerful than anything else in the history of sexuality. Keywords: post human body, performance, bio-politics, identity, mechanical body</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Stelarc and the posthuman body performance in contemporary art","attachmentId":52950937,"attachmentType":"doc","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/32799025/Stelarc_and_the_posthuman_body_performance_in_contemporary_art","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/32799025/Stelarc_and_the_posthuman_body_performance_in_contemporary_art"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="7" data-entity-id="117615153" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/117615153/An_Anatomical_Artwork">An Anatomical Artwork</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="301982310" href="https://independent.academia.edu/MeyerIon">Ion Meyer</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">2016</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"An Anatomical Artwork","attachmentId":113425670,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/117615153/An_Anatomical_Artwork","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/117615153/An_Anatomical_Artwork"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="8" data-entity-id="45106265" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/45106265/The_Significance_of_the_Body_in_the_work_of_Orlan_and_Stelarc">The Significance of the Body in the work of Orlan and Stelarc</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="99378902" href="https://courtauld.academia.edu/VictoriaWard">Victoria Ward</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">The significance of the body in the work of Orlan and Stelarc, 2021</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">This short article explores the multifaceted use of the body in the work of French performance artist Orlan, and the Cyprus-born artist Stelarc. What is necessary in such practices is that critical discussions centered on ethics and power are integrated into broader cultural dialogues in the creation of objects and products that design or redesign biological parts, devices or systems. This paper will examine specific examples of wearable art produced by architect and designer Neri Oxman. Using generative software to develop the series titled 'Wanderers, An Astrobiological Exploration', computational growth patterns give rise to undeniably biomorphic designs that emerge as external-organs-as-outerwear. Articulated as an imaginative set of prostheses hosting their own synthetic biology, these pieces represent a new frontier worn at the threshold of the skin. In the appraisal of these examples, I register speculative critical design as a methodology that interrogates the underlying assumptions of bioart and design processes as they converge with the life sciences. I ask what happens when the human body presents as a parasite to the apparatus upon which it depends? And further, what status can a prosthetic organ achieve if it becomes a co-participant in life? This paper will pursue these questions and examine whether the symbiotic relationships established between humans and their wearable prostheses could enable us to transcend corporeal difference, effectively challenging some the key analytical challenges facing a biotechnological future.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Inside Out: Prosthetic Organs as Wearable Art","attachmentId":53349439,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/33282004/Inside_Out_Prosthetic_Organs_as_Wearable_Art","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/33282004/Inside_Out_Prosthetic_Organs_as_Wearable_Art"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":31887000,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":31887000,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_31887000" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
