The term "Gizonite" likely indicates a geographical or clan affiliation, though the exact location or significance of "Gizon" is not well-documented in biblical or archaeological records. The mention of Hashem's sons in this context highlights their inclusion among David's mighty warriors, a group of elite fighters who played a crucial role in establishing David's kingdom. This reflects the importance of family lineage and tribal affiliations in ancient Israelite society, where one's identity and social standing were often tied to one's ancestry. The inclusion of Hashem's sons among the mighty men underscores the diverse backgrounds of those who supported David, suggesting a unification of various tribes and clans under his leadership.
Jonathan son of Shagee the Hararite
Jonathan is identified as the son of Shagee, with the designation "Hararite" likely indicating his origin from a place or clan named Harar. The specific location of Harar is not clearly identified in biblical texts, but it may refer to a region or a family group. Jonathan's mention among David's mighty warriors signifies his valor and skill in battle, contributing to the military successes that solidified David's reign. The name Jonathan, meaning "Yahweh has given," is significant in the biblical narrative, as it is also the name of David's close friend, the son of King Saul. This connection may evoke themes of loyalty and divine providence, as Jonathan's presence among the mighty men symbolizes the fulfillment of God's promises to David. The reference to Jonathan and his father Shagee highlights the generational aspect of service and dedication to God's chosen king, reflecting the broader biblical theme of covenant faithfulness.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Hashem the Gizonite
A warrior mentioned in the list of David's mighty men. Here the Syriac and Arabic have "the sons of Shem of 'Azun, Jonathan son of Shaga of Mount Carmel." The word "sons" (bne) is an accidental repetition of the last three letters of the Hebrew word for Shaalbonite. "Jashen the Gizonite" is probably the right reading.
Jonathan the son of Shage the Hararite.--This appears more correct than the text of Samuel, "Shammah the Hararite." "Shammah son of Age the Hararite" was the third hero of the first triad (2Samuel 23:11). Perhaps, therefore, the original reading here was "Jonathan son of Age (or Shammah) the Hararite." The Syriac and Arabic, however, support Shage.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 34. - The sons of Heshem the Gizonite. This sentence is unmanageable as it stands, and is insufficiently assisted from its parallel But if from this latter we take the suggestion of the preposition "from" (Authorized Version) before "the sons" (which, however, is not in the Hebrew), and from the Alexandrian Septuagint, the suggestion of the name Gouni (גּוּנִי), Guni, (1 Chronicles 5:15) in the place of Gizonite (גּוזנִי), we should obtain a coherent reading. But this would be mere conjecture suggested by the Septuagint, and "the Gizonite" offers the difficulty of the presence of the article, which would not subsist with the proper name Guni. Were it not that the word בְּנֵי is found in both passages all difficulty would disappear with its disappearance. The remainder of this verse, in relation to vers. 32 and 33 of the parallel, illustrates opportunely the uncertainties of the text. For, as seen above, Jonathan is the grandson of Shage (Agee, 2 Samuel 23:11), and son of Shammah, while (2 Chronicles 23:32, 33) the parallel reads "Jonathan," with no connective word "son" at all, yet supplies the right name, "Shammah the Hararite" for the father, and omits all mention of Shage.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Hebrew
the sons
בְּנֵ֗י (bə·nê)
Noun -
