Yet this themed section might serve to explore the always complicated question of how to move further for the scholarship on waste too. The four articles gathered here share an emphasis on the materiality of waste and how it is part of a social entanglement. They show the diversity of current discard studies, a field characterised by a critical examination of what is systematically left out and devalued. Overall, the themed section provides some crucial insights on how waste is a multiscalar phenomenon, defined differently by different actors. Empirical evidence from multiple contexts is used as illustration of the exclusion of growing numbers of people, a marginalisation which appears not simply as economic but also tem poral (Frederiksen 2015). Among the excluded and made superfluous, the figure of the migrant remains still as a transgressive presence, politically charged by defying the lines of order and purity. In her article on the actual disposable strangers, Cathrine Moe Thorleifsson engages with Douglas's axiom (1966) that things are defined as dirt not because they are unhealthy, but because they transgress particular cultural categorisations (generating dissonant and abject affects). She argues that in Hungary, the crossing refugees were made expandable and dehumanised through discourses associating them with the discarded items they left behind en route. This account identifies waste, firstly, as the anomalous product of arbitrary social categorizations, or ‘matter out of place’, and, secondly, as a distinctly human way of leaving behind and interpreting traces, or a mirror of culture. Together, these positions reflect a more or less constructivist and anthropocentric approach. Most commonly, waste is placed within a framework that privileges considerations of meaning over materiality and the threat of death over the perpetuity of life processes. For an alternative I turn to bio-semiotics and cross-species scholarship around the question of the animal. Specifically, the paper asks what theories of waste would look like if instead of taking ‘dirt’ as their starting point, they began with trans-species encounters with animal scat. Following bio-semiotics and efforts to deconstruct the animal/human binary, it is suggested that the objectual forms commonly referred to as ‘waste’ are not arbitrarily classified but purposefully expended, and thus symptomatic of life’s spatio-temporal continuation. Waste matter, therefore, is best construed not as anthropocentric but as semi-biotic: a sign of the form of life to which it once belonged. It shows how three major streams of research in the literature conceptualise waste: as a resource and property, a risk and a source of prosperity. Each of these theoretical framings of waste points to a specific type of politics and temporality. However, all three tend to be inadequate in balancing the discussion of 'waste' with a discussion of the 'stewardship' of discarded objects, emphasising instead the potential value generation or transformation of waste. Consequently, research on waste tends to exclude ways to live with the waste materials that cannot always be transformed away easily. Unmaking Waste tackles these questions through a long-term, cross-cultural approach. Drawing on archaeological finds, historical documents, and ethnographic observations to examine Europe, the United States, and Central America from prehistory to the present, Sarah Newman traces how different ideas about waste took shape in different times and places. Newman examines what people consider to be “waste” and how they interact with it, as well as what happens when different perceptions of trash come into conflict. Conceptions of waste have shaped forms of reuse and renewal in ancient Mesoamerica, early modern ideas of civility and forced religious conversion in New Spain, and even the modern discipline of archaeology. Newman argues that centuries of assumptions imposed on other places, times, and peoples need to be rethought. This book is not only a broad reconsideration of waste; it is also a call for new forms of archaeology that do not take garbage for granted.
