And the people departed.</span></td><td width="20%" class="odd" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span><span class="btext5">Rehoboam replied, "Go home for three days and then return to me." "How would you advise me to answer these people?" he asked.</span></td><td width="20%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span><span class="btext2">Then King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he was yet alive, saying, “How do you advise me to answer this people?”</span></td><td width="20%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span><span class="btext3">King Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon while he was still alive, saying, "How do you counsel me to answer this people?"</span></td><td width="20%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span><span class="btext4">And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?</span></td><td width="20%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span><span class="btext5">Then King Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon when he was alive, asking, "How do you advise me to respond to these people?" </span></td></tr></table> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center"><tr><td width="20%" class="odd" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span><span class="btext1">They replied, "If today you will be a servant to these people and serve them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants."</span></td><td width="20%" class="odd" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span><span class="btext2">And they said to him, “If you will be a servant to this people today and serve them, and speak good words to them when you answer them, then they will be your servants forever.”</span></td><td width="20%" class="odd" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span><span class="btext3">Then they spoke to him, saying, "If you will be a servant to this people today, and will serve them and grant them their petition, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever."</span></td><td width="20%" class="odd" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span><span class="btext4">And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.</span></td><td width="20%" class="odd" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span><span class="btext5">They replied, "Today if you will be a servant to these people and serve them, and if you respond to them by speaking kind words to them, they will be your servants forever." </span></td></tr></table> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center"><tr><td width="20%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span><span class="btext1">But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him.</span></td><td width="20%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span><span class="btext2">But he abandoned the counsel that the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him.</span></td><td width="20%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span><span class="btext3">But he forsook the counsel of the elders which they had given him, and consulted with the young men who grew up with him and served him.</span></td><td width="20%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span><span class="btext4">But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, <i>and</i> which stood before him:</span></td><td width="20%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span><span class="btext5">But he rejected the advice of the elders who had advised him and consulted with the young men who had grown up with him and served him. </span></td></tr></table> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" align="center"><tr><td width="20%" class="odd" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span><span class="btext1">He asked them, "What is your advice? Now tell them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's waist.</span></td><td width="20%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span><span class="btext2">And the young men who had grown up with him said to him, “Thus shall you speak to this people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you lighten it for us,’ thus shall you say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s thighs.</span></td><td width="20%" class="even" valign="top"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/12-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span><span class="btext3">The young men who grew up with him spoke to him, saying, "Thus you shall say to this people who spoke to you, saying, 'Your father made our yoke heavy, now you make it lighter for us!'
