Veder argues that American modernism’s formalist approach to art was galvanized by theories of kinaesthetic bodily response derived from experimental physiological psychology and facilitated by contemporary body cultures such as modern dance, rhythmic gymnastics, physical education, and physical therapy. Situating these complementary ideas and exercises in relation to enduring fears of neurasthenia, she contends that aesthetic modernism shared industrial modernity’s objective of efficiently managing neuromuscular energy. In a series of interconnected case studies, this book demonstrates that diverse modernists associated with the Armory Show, the Société Anonyme, the Stieglitz circle (especially O’Keeffe), and the Barnes Foundation participated in these discourses and practices and that “kin-aesthetic modernism” greatly influenced the formation of modern art in America and Davies&#39;s engagement with kinaesthetic modernism: the connections among the histories of modern art, body cultures, and physiological aesthetics in early-twentieth-century American culture. Veder argues that American modernism’s formalist approach to art was galvanized by theories of kinaesthetic bodily response derived from experimental physiological psychology and facilitated by contemporary body cultures such as modern dance, rhythmic gymnastics, physical education, and physical therapy. In this paper I wish to combine three historically related strands, aisthêsis, kinesthesis and aesthetics, to advance an argument concerning the aesthetic value of certain somatic sensations. Firstly, by capitalizing on a recent regard for somatic or inner bodily senses, including kinesthesia, proprioception and the vestibular system by drawing lines of historical continuity from earlier philosophical investigations on bodily background experience, initially from aisthêsis, Aristotle’s concept of the sensory faculty. Secondly, concepts of the sensate body are advanced through discoveries in the nervous system and related discussions of the ‘inner’ senses such as Charles Bell’s ‘muscle sense’ (1826), and what Charles Sherrington later termed ‘proprio-ception’ (1906). irdly, we consider the possibility of aesthetic status for those inner senses, where recently aesthetic arguments by Montero (2006) and Cole and Montero (2007) seek to determine aesthetic criteria for proprioception, and similarly in dance theory the aesthetic status of kinesthesia has been questioned (e.g. Foster 2011). Martin Jay too develops this line of criticism by arguing that aesthetic experi ence need not be consummatory in nature and that, with regard to somaesthetic experience, there are a wide array of &quot;transgressive body techniques&quot; that are just as aesthetically valuable as the kinds of experiences advocated by Dewey. Further, Jay argues that these techniques also perform an important political function since they draw attention to the violence that underlies the democratic process, reveal that there are alternatives to a rather homogenous public sphere, and illustrate the need for political criticism.2 Since Dewey held that aesthetic experience is essential for a democratic culture, it seems, then, that he would indeed espouse the work of transgressive body artists since such work can be seen as contributing to the pursuit of a democratic culture. For these reasons, Jay concludes that even though they are blatantly nonconsummatory in nature, transgressive body techniques have both aesthetic and political value and should not be dismissed outright. In this essay I will address Jay&#39;s argument first by assessing the aesthetic value of transgressive body techniques and then will go on to say something about their political efficacy. Taking the work of Orlan as my example, I will argue that such techniques have minimal aesthetic value and that what aesthetic value they do have is mitigated by their primarily critical aims. Thus, dance in exhibition spaces posits spectatorship as a physical act. It also provides an embodied understanding of our relationship to social spaces. How might this kinesthetic awareness be mobilized as a political gesture? My thesis examines the work of six contemporary artists - Jérôme Bel, Trisha Brown, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Joachim Koester, Ralph Lemon, and Rashaad Newsome - whose multi-disciplinary practices utilize two central tenets of the postmodern dance genre: the incorporation of everyday movement within choreography and a rejection of the archetypal dancer.
