The line is used by <a href="/companies/S/ScotRail/">ScotRail</a> to provide a service between <a href="/locations/A/Ayr/">Ayr</a> and <a href="/companies/S/Stranraer/">Stranraer</a>. Services start from Glasgow (running down via <a href="/locations/K/Kilwinning/">Kilwinning</a>) or <a href="/locations/C/Carlisle/">Carlisle</a> (running via <a href="/locations/D/Dumfries/">Dumfries</a>, <a href="/locations/K/Kilmarnock/">Kilmarnock</a> and <a href="/locations/A/Ayr/">Ayr</a>). Much freight was carried until the early 1990s.
