He became the king of Judah after the death of his father, Josiah, who was killed at Megiddo by Pharaoh Neco of Egypt. Jehoiakim's younger brother, Jehoahaz, initially succeeded Josiah but reigned for only three months before being deposed by Pharaoh Neco. Neco then installed Eliakim as king, changing his name to Jehoiakim, and imposed a heavy tribute on the land (<a href="/2_kings/23-34.htm">2 Kings 23:34-35</a>).<br><br><b>Reign and Political Context:</b><br>Jehoiakim reigned for eleven years, from approximately 609 to 598 BC. His reign was marked by political turmoil and shifting allegiances. Initially, he was a vassal of Egypt, but after the Battle of Carchemish in 605 BC, when Babylon defeated Egypt, Jehoiakim became a vassal of Nebuchadnezzar II, king of Babylon (<a href="/2_kings/24.htm">2 Kings 24:1</a>). However, after three years, Jehoiakim rebelled against Babylonian control, which led to a series of invasions by Babylonian, Aramean, Moabite, and Ammonite raiders (<a href="/2_kings/24-2.htm">2 Kings 24:2</a>).<br><br><b>Religious and Moral Conduct:</b><br>Jehoiakim's reign is characterized by a departure from the religious reforms of his father, Josiah. He is depicted as a king who did evil in the sight of the LORD, following the practices of his forefathers (<a href="/2_kings/23-37.htm">2 Kings 23:37</a>). His reign saw the continuation of idolatry and injustice, which were condemned by the prophets of the time, including Jeremiah and Habakkuk.<br><br>Jeremiah, in particular, had a contentious relationship with Jehoiakim. The king is noted for his disregard for the prophetic word, as demonstrated in the incident where he cut and burned the scroll of Jeremiah's prophecies (<a href="/jeremiah/36-23.htm">Jeremiah 36:23</a>). This act symbolized his rejection of divine warnings and his resistance to the call for repentance and reform.<br><br><b>Prophetic Interactions and Warnings:</b><br>The prophet Jeremiah warned Jehoiakim of the impending judgment due to his disobedience and the nation's sins. Jeremiah prophesied that Jehoiakim would have no one to sit on the throne of David and that his body would be cast out, exposed to the heat by day and the frost by night (<a href="/jeremiah/36-30.htm">Jeremiah 36:30</a>). This prophecy underscored the severity of divine judgment against Jehoiakim's reign.<br><br><b>Death and Succession:</b><br>Jehoiakim's death is shrouded in some mystery, as the biblical accounts do not provide explicit details. It is suggested that he died during the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem, and his son Jehoiachin succeeded him (<a href="/2_kings/24-6.htm">2 Kings 24:6</a>). The circumstances of his death fulfilled Jeremiah's prophecy, as he did not receive a proper burial, reflecting the ignominy of his reign.<br><br><b>Legacy:</b><br>Jehoiakim's reign is often viewed as a period of decline for the kingdom of Judah, marked by political instability, moral decay, and spiritual apostasy. His failure to heed prophetic warnings and his rebellion against Babylon contributed to the eventual fall of Jerusalem and the Babylonian exile.
