of New South Wales is a statutory authority that conducts audits for the Auditor-General. These audits help Parliament hold government accountable for its use of public resources.</p><p>Financial audits provide an independent opinion on the financial statements of NSW government entities, universities and councils. They identify whether their financial statements comply with accounting standards and relevant laws, regulations and government directions.</p><p>Performance audits review whether public money is spent effectively, efficiently, economically and in accordance with the law. Performance audits can be conducted of NSW government entities, universities and councils, and can include the activities of non-government entities that receive public funds for a State purpose.</p><p>When developing our <a href="/annual-work-program-2024-27" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="37bca911-3bc5-4af1-b2d1-910f8cf9fa6a" data-entity-substitution="canonical" title="Annual work program 2024-27">Annual Work Program</a> we consult with stakeholders, including NSW Parliament's Public Accounts Committee, heads of departments and other entities, and integrity agencies, to identify priorities for our performance audit program. The Auditor-General can be required to act on <a href="/our-work/requests-for-audit" data-entity-type="node" data-entity-uuid="1c59384c-039d-4c38-97ca-163473fcb1d3" data-entity-substitution="canonical" title="Requests for audit">audit requests</a> from ministers or the Treasurer.
