And do not mistreat<MH3238> <i>or</i> do<MH2554> violence<MH2554> to the stranger<MH1616>, the orphan<MH3490>, or the widow<MH490>; and do not shed<MH8210> innocent<MH5355a> blood<MH1818> in this<MH2088> place<MH4725>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>For if<MH518> you will indeed<MH6213a> perform<MH6213a> this<MH2088> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>instruction<MH1697>, then kings<MH4428> will enter<MH935> the gates<MH8179> of this<MH2088> house<MH1004>, sitting<MH3427> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>in David’s<MH1732> place on his throne<MH3678>, riding<MH7392> in chariots<MH7393> and on horses<MH5483b>, <i>the king</i> himself<MH1931>, his servants<MH5650>, and his people<MH5971a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But if<MH518> you will not obey<MH8085> these<MH428> words<MH1697>, I swear<MH7650> by Myself,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>, “that this<MH2088> house<MH1004> will become<MH1961> a place<MH2723> of<MH2723> ruins<MH2723>.”’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>For this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559> concerning<MH5921> the house<MH1004> of the king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063>: <p class="indent1stline">“You are <i>like</i> Gilead<MH1568> to Me, <t><p class="indent1"><i>Like</i> the summit<MH7218> of Lebanon<MH3844>; <t><p class="indent1">Yet most<MH518, 3808> assuredly<MH518, 3808> I will make<MH7896> you a wilderness<MH4057b>, <t><p class="indent1">Cities<MH5892b> that are not inhabited<MH3427>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>“For I will set<MH6942> apart<MH6942> destroyers<MH7843> against<MH5921> you, <t><p class="indent1">Each<MH376> with his weapons<MH3627>; <t><p class="indent1">And they will cut<MH3772> down<MH3772> your choicest<MH4005> cedars<MH730> <t><p class="indent1">And throw<MH5307> <i>them</i> on the fire<MH784>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>“Many<MH7227a> nations<MH1471> will pass<MH5674a> by this<MH2088> city<MH5892b>; and they will say<MH559> to one<MH376> another<MH7453>, ‘Why<MH5921, 4100> has the LORD<MH3068> done<MH6213a> this<MH3602> to this<MH2088> great<MH1419> city<MH5892b>?’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then they will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>answer<MH559>, ‘Because<MH5921, 834> they abandoned<MH5800a> the covenant<MH1285> of the LORD<MH3068> their God<MH430> and bowed<MH2331c> down<MH2331c> to other<MH312> gods<MH430> and served<MH5647> them.’” <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Do not weep<MH1058> for the dead<MH4191> or mourn<MH5110> for him, <t><p class="indent1"><i>But</i> weep<MH1058> deeply<MH1058> for the one who goes<MH1980> away; <t><p class="indent1">For he will never<MH3808, 5750> return<MH7725> <t><p class="indent1">Or see<MH7200> his native<MH4138> land<MH776>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>For this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559> regarding<MH413> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>Shallum<MH7967> the son<MH1121> of Josiah<MH2977>, king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063>, who became<MH4427a> king<MH4427a> in<MH8478> the place<MH8478> of<MH8478> his father<MH1> Josiah<MH2977>, who<MH834> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> from this<MH2088> place<MH4725>: “He will never<MH3808, 5750> return<MH7725> there<MH8033>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>but in the place<MH4725> where<MH834, 8033> they took<MH1540> him into<MH1540> exile<MH1540>, there<MH8033> he will die<MH4191> and he will not see<MH7200> this<MH2088> land<MH776> again<MH5750>. <p class="hdg">Messages about the Kings</p><poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>“Woe<MH1945> to him who builds<MH1129> his house<MH1004> without<MH3808> righteousness<MH6664>, <t><p class="indent1">And his upstairs<MH5944> rooms<MH5944> without<MH3808> justice<MH4941>, <t><p class="indent1">Who uses<MH5647> his neighbor’s<MH7453> services<MH5647> without<MH2600> pay<MH2600> <t><p class="indent1">And does not give<MH5414> him his wages<MH6467>, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Who says<MH559>, ‘I will build<MH1129> myself a large<MH4060a> house<MH1004> <t><p class="indent1">With spacious<MH7304> upstairs<MH5944> rooms<MH5944>, <t><p class="indent1">And cut<MH7167> out<MH7167> its windows<MH2474>, <t><p class="indent1"><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>Paneling<MH5603> <i>it</i> with cedar<MH730> and painting<MH4886> <i>it</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>bright<MH8350> red<MH8350>.’ <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>“Do you become<MH4427a> a<MH4427a> king<MH4427a> because<MH3588> you are competing<MH2734> in cedar<MH730>? <t><p class="indent1">Did your father<MH1> not eat<MH398> and drink<MH8354> <t><p class="indent1">And do<MH6213a> justice<MH4941> and righteousness<MH6666>? <t><p class="indent1">Then<MH227> it was well<MH2895> for him. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>“He pled<MH1777> the cause<MH1779> of the afflicted<MH6041> and the poor<MH34>, <t><p class="indent1">Then<MH227> it was well<MH2895>. <t><p class="indent1">Is that not <i>what it means</i> to know<MH1847> Me?” <t><p class="indent1">Declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>“But your eyes<MH5869> and your heart<MH3820> <t><p class="indent1">Are <i>intent</i> only<MH3588, 518> upon your own dishonest<MH1215> gain<MH1215>, <t><p class="indent1">And on shedding<MH8210> innocent<MH5355a> blood<MH1818>, <t><p class="indent1">And on practicing<MH6213a> oppression<MH6233> and extortion<MH4835>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Therefore<MH3651> this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559> regarding<MH413> Jehoiakim<MH3079> the son<MH1121> of Josiah<MH2977>, king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063>: <p class="indent1stline">“They will not mourn<MH5594> for him: <p class="indent1stline">‘Oh<MH1945>, my brother<MH251>!’ or, ‘Oh<MH1945>, sister<MH269>!’ <t><p class="indent1">They will not mourn<MH5594> for him: <p class="indent1stline">‘Oh<MH1945>, for the master<MH113>!’ or, ‘Oh<MH1945>, for his splendor<MH1935>!’ <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>“He will be buried<MH6912> with a donkey’s<MH2543> burial<MH6900>, <t><p class="indent1">Dragged<MH5498> off<MH5498> and thrown<MH7993> out<MH7993> beyond<MH4480, 1973> the gates<MH8179> of Jerusalem<MH3389>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>“Go<MH5927> up<MH5927> to Lebanon<MH3844> and cry<MH6817> out<MH6817>, <t><p class="indent1">And raise<MH5414> your voice<MH6963> in Bashan<MH1316>; <t><p class="indent1">Cry<MH6817> out<MH6817> also from Abarim<MH5682>, <t><p class="indent1">For all<MH3605> your lovers<MH157> have been crushed<MH7665>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>“I spoke<MH1696> to you in your prosperity<MH7962>; <t><p class="indent1">But you said<MH559>, ‘I will not listen<MH8085>!’ <t><p class="indent1">This<MH2088> has been your way<MH1870> from your youth<MH5271>, <t><p class="indent1">That you have not obeyed<MH8085> My voice<MH6963>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>“The wind<MH7307> will sweep<MH7462a> away<MH7462a> all<MH3605> your shepherds<MH7462a>, <t><p class="indent1">And your lovers<MH157> will go<MH1980> into captivity<MH7628b>; <t><p class="indent1">Then<MH227> you will certainly<MH3588> be<MH954> ashamed<MH954> and humiliated<MH3637> <t><p class="indent1">Because<MH4480> of all<MH3605> your wickedness<MH7463a>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>“You who live<MH3427> in Lebanon<MH3844>, <t><p class="indent1">Nested<MH7077> in the cedars<MH730>, <t><p class="indent1">How<MH4100> you will groan<MH584> when sharp<MH2256b> pains<MH2256b> come<MH935> on you, <t><p class="indent1">Pain<MH2427> like a woman in<MH3205> childbirth<MH3205>! <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>“As I live<MH2416a>,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>, “even<MH3588> if<MH518> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Coniah<MH3078> the son<MH1121> of Jehoiakim<MH3079> king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063> were a signet<MH2368> <i>ring</i> on My right<MH3225> hand<MH3027>, yet<MH3588> I would pull<MH5423> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>off<MH5423>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>and I will hand<MH5414, 3027> you over<MH5414> to those who are seeking<MH1245> your life<MH5315>, yes, to those of whom<MH834> you are frightened<MH3016>, that is, to Nebuchadnezzar<MH5019> king<MH4428> of Babylon<MH894> and the Chaldeans<MH3778>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>I will hurl<MH2904> you and your mother<MH517> who<MH834> gave<MH3205> birth<MH3205> to you into another<MH312> country<MH776> where<MH834, 8033> you were not born<MH3205>, and there<MH8033> you will die<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>But as for the land<MH776> to which<MH834> they long<MH5375, 5315> to return<MH7725>, they will not return<MH7725> to it. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>“Is this<MH2088> man<MH376> Coniah<MH3078> a despised<MH959>, shattered<MH5310a> jar<MH6089b>? <t><p class="indent1">Or<MH518> is he an undesirable<MH369, 2656> vessel<MH3627>? <t><p class="indent1">Why<MH4069> have he and his descendants<MH2233> been hurled<MH2904> out<MH2904> <t><p class="indent1">And cast<MH7993> into a land<MH776> that they had not known<MH3045>? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>“O land<MH776>, land<MH776>, land<MH776>, <t><p class="indent1">Hear<MH8085> the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>! <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/22-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: <p class="indent1stline">‘Write<MH3789> this<MH2088> man<MH1397> down<MH3789> <i>as</i> childless<MH6185>, <t><p class="indent1">A man<MH1397> who will not prosper<MH6743b> in his days<MH3117>;
