Therefore if you seek Me, allow these to go away,”</span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>so that the word that He had spoken might be fulfilled, <span class="red">“Those whom You have given Me, I have lost none of them, not one.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. Now the servant’s name was Malchus. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Therefore Jesus said to Peter, <span class="red">“Put the sword into the sheath. The cup which the Father has given Me, shall I not drink it?”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then the cohort and the commander and the officers of the Jews took hold of Jesus and bound Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And they led <i>Him</i> away to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest the same year. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Now Caiaphas was the <i>one</i> having given counsel to the Jews that it is profitable for one man to perish for the people. </p><p class="hdg">Peter's First Denial<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 26:69-71; Mark 14:66-67; Luke 22:54-57)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And Simon Peter and the other disciple were following Jesus. Now since that disciple was known to the high priest, he also entered with Jesus into the court of the high priest. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But Peter stood at the door outside. Therefore the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought in Peter. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Therefore the servant girl, the doorkeeper, says to Peter, “Are you not also of the disciples of this man?”</p><p class="reg"> He says, “I am not.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now the servants and the officers were standing, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold and they were warming themselves. And Peter was also standing with them and warming himself. </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Before the High Priest<br /><span class="cross">(Isaiah 53:1-8; Matthew 26:57-68; Mark 14:53-65; 1 Peter 2:21-25)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then the high priest questioned Jesus concerning His disciples and concerning His teaching. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Jesus answered him, <span class="red">“I have spoken openly to the world. I always taught in <i>the</i> synagogue and in the temple, where the Jews always come together; and I spoke nothing in secret. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Why do you question Me? Question those having heard what I spoke to them. Behold, they know what I said.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Now of His having said these things, one of the officers standing by gave a blow with the palm to Jesus, having said, “Do You answer the high priest this way?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Jesus answered him, <span class="red">“If I spoke evil, bear witness concerning the evil; but if rightly, why do you strike Me?”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. </p><p class="hdg">Peter's Second and Third Denials<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 26:71-75; Mark 14:68-72; Luke 22:58-62)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. Therefore they said to him, “Are you not also <i>one</i> of His disciples?”</p><p class="reg"> He denied <i>it</i> and said, “I am not.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>One of the servants of the high priest, being kinsman <i>of him</i> whose ear Peter had cut off, says, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Then Peter denied <i>it</i> again, and immediately a rooster crowed. </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Before Pilate<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 27:11-14; Luke 23:1-6)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Then they are leading Jesus from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. Now it was early, and they did not enter into the Praetorium, so that they should not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Therefore Pilate went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>They answered and said to him, “If He were not doing evil, we would not have delivered Him to you.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Therefore Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and judge Him according to your Law.”</p><p class="reg"> The Jews said to him, “It is not permitted to us to put anyone to death”— <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>that word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which He had spoken signifying what death He was about to die. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Therefore Pilate entered again into the Praetorium, and he called Jesus and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Jesus answered, <span class="red">“Do you say this of yourself, or did others say <i>it</i> to you concerning Me?”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your nation and the chief priests delivered You to me. What have You done?” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Jesus answered, <span class="red">“My kingdom is not of this world; if My kingdom were of this world, My attendants would fight that I might not be betrayed to the Jews. But now My kingdom is not from here.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/18-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>Therefore Pilate said to Him, “Then You are a king?”</p><p class="reg"> Jesus answered, <span class="red">“You say that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, that I may bear witness to the truth.
