The preserved braincase of this specimen has a bird-like lateral position of the optic lobes, with proportionally a smaller size than in birds, the bones surrounding it being thick and hollow. An original biometric analysis, based on skull length and tooth number, has been performed using a selection of Late Jurassic Pterodactyloidea of Europe. This study suggests that Ctenochasma gracile and Ctenochasma porocristata are senior synonyms of Pterodactylus elegans and Pterodactylus antiquus of Pterodactylus kochi. It also reveals that Pterodactylus elegans may be transferred to Ctenochasma. These results obtained with biometric analyses are confirmed by morphological observations. This study could not determine if Pterodactylus micronyx is a juvenile of C. roemeri, the Ctenochasma of Saint Dizier or Gnathosaurus subulatus. Because this species is only composed of juveniles, more data are needed to determine its adult morphology. The genus Ctenochasma is thus represented by three species, C. elegans, C. roemeri and C. sp., and Pterodactylus by two, P. antiquus and P. longicollum, all from the Late Jurassic of Germany and France. This study points out a biological anomaly: all the teeth are not present in a hatching pterosaur, but their number increase progressively during growth, with new teeth erupting from the front of the jaws. This phenomenon is particularly spectacular in Ctenochasma elegans, where the tooth number increases progressively from 60 to more than 400 teeth during growth.

Darren H Tanke

Premaxillary tooth count tends to be stable amongst toothed dinosaurs, and most theropods have four teeth in each premaxilla. Only one case of bilaterally asymmetric variation is known in theropod premaxillary dentition, and there is no record of ontogenetic or individual variation in premaxillary tooth count. Based on these observations, a tyrannosaurid left premaxilla with three teeth (TMP 2007.20.124) is an interesting deviation and represents an unusual individual of Daspletosaurus sp. with a developmental abnormality. The lower number of teeth is coupled with relatively larger alveoli, each of which is capable of hosting a larger than normal tooth. This indicates that tooth size and dental count vary inversely, and instances of reduction in tooth count may arise from selection for increased tooth size. On the other hand, the conservative number of premaxillary teeth in most theropods implies strong developmental constraints and a functional trade-off between the dimensions of the premaxillary alveolar margin and the size of the teeth. In light of recent advances in the study of tooth morphogenesis, tooth count is a function of two parameters: dimensions of an odontogenic field for a tooth series, and dimensions of tooth positions. A probable developmental cause for the low tooth count of TMP 2007.20.124 is that the dimensions of the alveoli expanded by approximately a third during tooth morphogenesis. Numerical traits such as tooth count are difficult to treat in a phylogenetic analysis. When formulating a phylogenetic character, a potential alternative to simply counting is to rely on the morphological signature for developmental parameters that control the number of the element in question.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" Paleontology, 2022

The Anhangueridae are a clade of toothed pterodactyloid pterosaurs, known from their characteristic anteriorly expanded premaxillae and conspicuous rostral sagittal premaxillary and dentary crests. Most known anhanguerids come from the Lower Cretaceous Romualdo Formation within the Araripe Basin of northeast Brazil. With four currently valid genera and several specimens referred to the clade, anhanguerids are the most abundant and diverse tetrapod group in the Romualdo Formation. However, some studies suggest this diversity may be overestimated, as many taxa have been diagnosed based on subtle differences in their premaxillary crests, a structure argued to be either ontogenetically variable or sexually dimorphic. Here we describe an anterior fragment of a gracile pterosaur rostrum that possesses the single diagnostic feature of Anhanguera (fifth and sixth pairs of dental alveoli smaller than the fourth and seventh), but lacks a sagittal crest. The affinities of the new fossil among other toothed pterosaurs were tested through both cladistic and geometric morphometric approaches, which allow referral of the new specimen to Anhanguera. The absence of a crest in the new specimen of Anhanguera suggests that this structure varies in terms of ontogeny and/or sex, and that perhaps it was influenced by sexual selection.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"The ontogenetic growth of Anhangueridae (Pterosauria, Pterodactyloidea) premaxillary crests as revealed by a crestless Anhanguera specimen","attachmentId":92701808,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/88793574/The_ontogenetic_growth_of_Anhangueridae_Pterosauria_Pterodactyloidea_premaxillary_crests_as_revealed_by_a_crestless_Anhanguera_specimen","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

First North American occurrence of the toothed pteranodontoid pterosaur Cimoliopterus
Timothy Myers

A new pterosaur species, Cimoliopterus dunni, sp. nov., is described based on a partial rostrum from the upper Cenomanian Britton Formation in the Eagle Ford Group of north-central Texas. The holotype preserves alveoli for a minimum of 26 upper teeth and bears a thin premaxillary crest that begins above the fourth pair of alveoli. The rostrum, characterized by a slight lateral flare, lacks the pronounced lateral expansion found in ornithocheirids and anhanguerids. The tip of the snout is small and blunt, and the anterior face of the rostrum is oriented posteroventrally, forming an approximately 45 angle with the anterior portion of the palate. The anteroventrally oriented first pair of alveoli is directed more ventrally than anteriorly. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that Cimoliopterus dunni and Cimoliopterus cuvieri, from the Cenomanian Grey Chalk Subgroup in Kent, England, are basal pteranodontoids that are closely related to Aetodactylus halli from the middle Cenomanian Tarrant Formation of north Texas. Cimoliopterus dunni marks only the second known occurrence of Cimoliopterus, extending its geographic range from Europe to North America. In conjunction with Coloborhynchus wadleighi from the upper Albian Pawpaw Formation, Cimoliopterus dunni provides unambiguous evidence of biogeographic linkages between the pterosaur faunas of North America and Europe in the middle Cretaceous.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"First North American occurrence of the toothed pteranodontoid pterosaur Cimoliopterus","attachmentId":40513120,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/17739250/First_North_American_occurrence_of_the_toothed_pteranodontoid_pterosaur_Cimoliopterus","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Neonate morphology and development in pterosaurs: evidence from a Ctenochasmatid embryo from the Early Cretaceous of Argentina
Laura Codorniú

Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 2017

We report on a diminutive pterosaur specimen (MIC-V246), from the Lower Cretaceous Lagarcito Formation, which has anatomical features and general proportions that agree with those of other juvenile specimens of the filter-feeding pterosaur Pterodaustro guinazui. It includes remains of the skull and mandible, some cervical, dorsal, sacral and caudal vertebrae, ribs, gastralia, both shoulder girdles, part of the ilium, and the forelimbs and hindlimbs. The skeleton is arranged in a position similar to that of avian embryos, with the wings folded sideways, the hindlimbs flexed, and the skull tucked beneath a wing.
