Titel „Internationales Weichtier 2025“ gewonnen. Bei der öffentlichen Online-Abstimmung erhielt Muusoctopus die meisten Stimmen und ließ drei Meeresschnecken und eine Muschel, die ebenfalls im Finale des Wettbewerbs standen, hinter sich. Die gemeinsame Aktion der Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung und der Unitas Malacologica, der weltweiten Gesellschaft für Molluskenforschung, fand in diesem Jahr zum fünften Mal statt. Das Erbgut des achtarmigen Gewinners wird nun erstmals vollständig sequenziert. </em> </p> <p> Der Tiefsee-Oktopus Muusoctopus erhielt über 1.300 Stimmen und zog so an der Meeresschnecke „Blauer Drache“ (Glaucus atlanticus), der Atlantischen Träger-Schnecke (Xenophora conchyliophora), der Hawaiischen Schwarzfuß-Napfschnecke (Cellana exarata) und der Islandmuschel (Arctica islandica) vorbei. Insgesamt beteiligten sich über 4.000 Weichtier-Fans an der Abstimmung. Die Gattung Muusoctopus umfasst Kraken, die in der eisigen Tiefe der Ozeane leben. Sie unterscheiden sich von ihren flachwasserbewohnenden Verwandten unter anderem durch das Fehlen einer Tintenblase – eine Anpassung an die Dunkelheit der Tiefsee, wo nur wenige Räuber lauern.<br /> <br /> Vorgeschlagen für den Titel „Molluske des Jahres 2025“ wurde der Tiefsee-Oktopus von der Meeresbiologin Fiorella Vásquez-Fallas von der Universität von Costa Rica. „Kraken der Gattung Muusoctopus sind faszinierende Tiere“, erzählt Vásquez-Fallas. „Erst kürzlich wurde entdeckt, dass eine Muusoctopus-Art – der ‚Dorado Octopus‘ – riesige Tiefsee-Kraken-Kolonien in etwa 3000 Metern Tiefe vor der Küste Costa Ricas bildet. Die Weibchen dieser Art scheinen ihre Eier ausschließlich in den warmen Gewässern hydrothermaler Quellen zu brüten – ein außergewöhnliches Verhalten, das unser Verständnis von Tiefsee-Ökologie, Fortpflanzung und Evolution revolutioniert. Ich freue mich sehr, dass Muusoctopus zum ‚Internationalen Weichtier des Jahres 2025‘ gewählt wurde!“<br /> <br /> Neue Erkenntnisse über Muusoctopus wird nun auch die Analyse seines Erbguts bringen, die mit dem Gewinn des Titels verbunden ist. „Wir werden die DNA der ‚Molluske des Jahres 2025‘ nun erstmals vollständig bei Senckenberg sequenzieren. So können wir Erkenntnisse über die genetischen Grundlagen ihrer außergewöhnlichen Lebensweise und Anpassung an das Leben in der Tiefsee gewinnen“, berichtet Dr. Carola Greve vom Senckenberg Forschungsinstitut und Naturmuseum Frankfurt. „Obwohl Weichtiere die zweitartenreichste Tiergruppe der Welt bilden, mit einer faszinierenden Vielfalt von Formen, Lebensweisen und Anpassungen, wurden bisher nur die Genome von vergleichsweise wenigen Mollusken-Arten vollständig sequenziert. Bei unserem Verständnis der genomischen Grundlagen ihrer beeindruckenden Eigenschaften klafft deshalb noch eine große Lücke.“<br /> <br /> Nachdem eine Jury aus Forschenden von Senckenberg und der Unitas Malacologica aus mehr als 30 Vorschlägen der internationalen Weichtier-Community fünf Arten für das Finale ausgewählt hatte, konnten alle Fans von Schnecke, Oktopus und Co. vom 3. bis 31. März online für ihren Favoriten abstimmen.<br /> Muusoctopus erhielt mit 1.337 Stimmen rund ein Drittel der insgesamt 4.005 abgegebenen Stimmen. Knapp auf dem zweiten Platz landete die Meeresschnecke Blauer Drache (Glaucus atlanticus), gefolgt von der Islandmuschel (Arctica islandica), der Atlantischen Träger-Schnecke (Xenophora conchyliophora) und der Hawaiischen Schwarzfuß-Napfschnecke (Cellana exarata).<br /> <br /> „Wir sind absolut begeistert, dass sich auch in diesem Jahr wieder so viele Weichtier-Fans aus der ganzen Welt an der Aktion beteiligt haben!
