the late 1980s, being considerably promoted by an increased public awareness of the global climate significance of polar regions and the opening of the Russian Arctic to foreign researchers. As a result, our knowledge on the Arctic benthos has been markedly enhanced, leading to the need to revise some widespread concepts about its ecological structure and function, particularly with regard to the often-cited disparities between the Arctic and the Antarctic. Most generally, the novel data clearly demonstrated that the various Arctic seas differ to a large extent in geographical and environmental setting, impact of fluvial run-off, pelagic production regime, strength of pelagic-benthic coupling and, hence, food supply to the benthos.
