The 4109 identified bones produced a Minimum Number of Individuals of 1040 fish from 8 families. The assemblage was dominated by New Zealand snapper (Pagms auratus, Family Sparidae), which comprised 80% of the total MNI. Kahawai (Arripis tn1tta, Fami ly Anipidae) contributed 15% and other families only minor amounts. Snapper decreased in abundance and kahawai increased from the lower to the upper layers. Live fork length was estimated with standard errors ranging from 9-18 mm, and live ungutted weight with standard errors ranging from 120-344 g, depending on anatomy measured. Size-frequency diagrams were reconstructed, representing the original fish catches. These were compared with data derived from modern and commercial trawl catches from nearby marine environments. It was found that the archaeological fish catches are dominated by much larger fish than modern catches, reflecting a combination of two processes: selective capturing methods on the part of the pre-European Ma¯ori, which favoured large fish, and massive stock depletion in the post-European period. Several alternative methods of estimating fish weight are examined, each giving results within about 10% of correct mean values. It is suggested that if we are to verify hypothesized human-induced changes in fish populations over archaeological time, we need higher quality collections than are normally available for study.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Leach, B.F. and Davidson, J.M. 2000. There is significant stratigraphy at the site, enabling fishing behaviour over about 600 years to be documented. Measurements were made on 824 snapper bones and regression formulae used to estimate live fork length and ungutted weight of the original catch. Size-frequency distributions are reconstructed and compared with modem-day catch data from research trawls in Tasman Bay in depths ranging from 17 to 165 m. No significant difference was detected between tbe ancient and modern catches when all results were pooled together. However, a significant increase through time was found in the size of snapper in the archaeological site, from a mean weight of 3.5 ± 0.1 kg in the earliest deposit to 4.2 ± 0 .1 kg in the latest layer. Several hypotheses which might explain such a change are suggested, including seasonal occupation effects, natural environmental changes, and localised depletion. Deciding between different options is difficult One explanation might be that the occupants frn;t harvested the shallow waters of Cable Bay close at hand and, as these became depleted, turned their attention to a more distant fishing ground which had larger fish. Tasman Bay is close to the southernmost distribution of snapper in New Zealand and is well known for anomalous age recruitment and patchy distribution by size, both from one area to another and through time. The observed change over archaeological time may therefore reflect such an episode.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Leach, B.F. and Boocock, A. 1994. A total of 6380 identified bones produced a Minimum Number of Individuals of 1802 fish from at least 25 families. Recent surveys show that the archaeologically documented catches closely reflect the species still present in the immediate inshore environment. Comparison of one late (nineteenth century) and two early (fifteenth century) assemblages show an apparent decline in the importance of New Zealand snapper (Pagrus auraJus) and an increase in the use of netting, although angling with a demersal baited book was the dominant method used by all the Mana fishermen. Comparison with other assemblages from Cook Strait show that a wide range of species were taken, with widely varying proportions of different fish from one site to another. Although certain species are found in most of the Cook Strait sites, no single species stands out, like snapper in the northern North Island or barracouta (Thyrsites atun) in much of the South Island.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Horwood, L.M., Leach, B.F. and Davidson, J.M. 1998. These may be due to a difference in age between the two middens and a possible change in fishing conditions through time. A comparison of fish catches at a number of Cook Strait archaeological sites showed that pre-European fishermen in the region used several catching strategies, notably trolling with lures, angling with demersal baited hooks, and netting. Fishermen gave different emphasis to these methods at different sites.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Leach, B.F., Davidson, J.M., Horwood, L.M., and Boocock, A. 1997. In all, only about 50 types are found in archaeological sites, and these are largely inshore fish which live amongst rocky weedy areas, or in open beaches, or rough ground slightly offshore. This makes the task of identifying bones much easier.
