you shall camp<MH2583> in front<MH6440> of Baal-zephon<MH1189>, opposite<MH5227> it, by the sea<MH3220>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>For Pharaoh<MH6547> will say<MH559> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, &#8216;They are wandering<MH943> aimlessly<MH943> in the land<MH776>; the wilderness<MH4057b> has shut<MH5462> them in<MH5462>.&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And I will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>harden<MH2388> Pharaoh&#8217;s<MH6547> heart<MH3820>, and he will chase<MH7291> after<MH310> them; and I will be honored<MH3513> through Pharaoh<MH6547> and all<MH3605> his army<MH2428>, and the Egyptians<MH4714> will know<MH3045> that I am the LORD<MH3068>.&#8221; And they did<MH6213a> so<MH3651>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>When the king<MH4428> of Egypt<MH4714> was told<MH5046> that the people<MH5971a> had fled<MH1272>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>Pharaoh<MH6547> and his servants<MH5650> had<MH2015> a<MH2015> change<MH2015> of heart<MH3824> toward<MH413> the people<MH5971a>, and they said<MH559>, &#8220;What<MH4100> is this<MH2088> <i>that</i> we have done<MH6213a>, that we have let<MH7971> Israel<MH3478> go<MH7971> from serving<MH5647> us?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So he had <i>horses</i> harnessed<MH631> <i>to</i> his chariot<MH7393> and took<MH3947> his people<MH5971a> with him; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>and he took<MH3947> six<MH8337a> hundred<MH3967> select<MH977> chariots<MH7393>, and all<MH3605> the <i>other</i> chariots<MH7393> of Egypt<MH4714> with officers<MH7991c> over<MH5921> all<MH3605> of them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>So the LORD<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>hardened<MH2388> the heart<MH3820> of Pharaoh<MH6547>, king<MH4428> of Egypt<MH4714>, and he chased<MH7291> after<MH310> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> as the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> were going<MH3318> out<MH3318> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>boldly<MH7311, 3027>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then the Egyptians<MH4714> chased<MH7291> after<MH310> them <i>with</i> all<MH3605> the horses<MH5483b> <i>and</i> chariots<MH7393> of Pharaoh<MH6547>, his horsemen<MH6571b> and his army<MH2428>, and they overtook<MH5381> them camping<MH2583> by the sea<MH3220>, beside<MH5921> Pi-hahiroth<MH6367>, in front<MH6440> of Baal-zephon<MH1189>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>As Pharaoh<MH6547> approached<MH7126>, the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>looked<MH5375, 5869>, and behold<MH2009>, the Egyptians<MH4714> were coming<MH5265> after<MH310> them, and they became<MH3372a> very<MH3966> frightened<MH3372a>; so the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> cried<MH6817> out<MH6817> to the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then they said<MH559> to Moses<MH4872>, &#8220;Is it because<MH4480, 1097> there<MH369> were<MH369> no<MH369> graves<MH6913> in Egypt<MH4714> that you have taken<MH3947> us away to die<MH4191> in the wilderness<MH4057b>? Why<MH4100> have you dealt<MH6213a> with us in this<MH2088> way<MH2088>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>bringing<MH3318> us out<MH3318> of Egypt<MH4714>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Is this<MH2088> not the word<MH1697> that we spoke<MH1696> to you in Egypt<MH4714>, saying<MH559>, &#8216;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Leave<MH2308> us alone<MH4480> so that we may serve<MH5647> the Egyptians<MH4714>&#8217;? For it would have been better<MH2896a> for us to serve<MH5647> the Egyptians<MH4714> than<MH4480> to die<MH4191> in the wilderness<MH4057b>!&#8221; <p class="hdg">The Sea Is Divided</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>But Moses<MH4872> said<MH559> to the people<MH5971a>, &#8220;Do not fear<MH3372a>! <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>Stand<MH3320> by and see<MH7200> the salvation<MH3444> of the LORD<MH3068>, which<MH834> He will perform<MH6213a> for you today<MH3117>; for the Egyptians<MH4714> whom<MH834> you have seen<MH7200> today<MH3117>, you will never<MH3808, 5750> see<MH7200> them again<MH3254>, ever<MH5704, 5769>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>The LORD<MH3068> will fight<MH3898a> for you, while you keep<MH2790b> silent<MH2790b>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Moses<MH4872>, &#8220;Why<MH4100> are you crying<MH6817> out<MH6817> to Me? Tell<MH1696> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> to go<MH5265> forward<MH5265>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>As for you, lift<MH7311> up<MH7311> your staff<MH4294> and reach<MH5186> out<MH5186> with your hand<MH3027> over<MH5921> the sea<MH3220> and divide<MH1234> it, and the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> shall <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>go<MH935> through<MH935> the midst<MH8432> of the sea<MH3220> on dry<MH3004> land<MH3004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And as for Me, behold<MH2009>, I will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>harden<MH2388> the hearts<MH3820> of the Egyptians<MH4714> so that they will go<MH935> in<MH935> after<MH310> them; and I will be honored<MH3513> through Pharaoh<MH6547> and all<MH3605> his army<MH2428>, through his chariots<MH7393> and his horsemen<MH6571b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then the Egyptians<MH4714> will know<MH3045> that I am the LORD<MH3068>, when I am honored<MH3513> through Pharaoh<MH6547>, through his chariots<MH7393>, and through his horsemen<MH6571b>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then the angel<MH4397> of God<MH430>, who had been going<MH1980> before<MH6440> the camp<MH4264> of Israel<MH3478>, moved<MH5265> and went<MH1980> behind<MH4480, 310> them; and the pillar<MH5982> of cloud<MH6051> moved<MH5265> from before<MH4480, 6440> them and stood<MH5975> behind<MH4480, 310> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>So it came<MH935> between<MH996> the camp<MH4264> of Egypt<MH4714> and the camp<MH4264> of Israel<MH3478>; and there was the cloud<MH6051> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>along with the darkness<MH2822>, yet it gave<MH215> light<MH215> at night<MH3915>. Therefore the one<MH2088> did not approach<MH7126> the other<MH2088> all<MH3605> night<MH3915>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then Moses<MH4872> reached<MH5186> out<MH5186> with his hand<MH3027> over<MH5921> the sea<MH3220>; and the LORD<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>swept<MH1980> the sea<MH3220> <i>back</i> by a strong<MH5794> east<MH6921> wind<MH7307> all<MH3605> night<MH3915>, and turned<MH7760> the sea<MH3220> into dry<MH2724> land<MH2724>, and the waters<MH4325> were divided<MH1234>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>So the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>went<MH935> through<MH935> the midst<MH8432> of the sea<MH3220> on the dry<MH3004> land<MH3004>, and the waters<MH4325> <i>were like</i> a wall<MH2346> to them on their right<MH3225> and on their left<MH8040>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Then the Egyptians<MH4714> took<MH7291> up<MH7291> the<MH7291> pursuit<MH7291>, and all<MH3605> Pharaoh&#8217;s<MH6547> horses<MH5483b>, his chariots<MH7393>, and his horsemen<MH6571b> went<MH935> in<MH935> after<MH310> them into the midst<MH8432> of the sea<MH3220>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>But at the morning<MH1242> watch<MH821>, the LORD<MH3068> looked<MH8259> down<MH8259> on the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>army<MH4264> of the Egyptians<MH4714> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>through the pillar<MH5982> of fire<MH784> and cloud<MH6051>, and brought<MH2000> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>army<MH4264> of the Egyptians<MH4714> into<MH2000> confusion<MH2000>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>He <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>caused<MH5493> their chariot<MH4818> wheels<MH212> to<MH5493> swerve<MH5493>, and He made them drive<MH5090a> with difficulty<MH3517>; so the Egyptians<MH4714> <i>each</i> said<MH559>, &#8220;Let me flee<MH5127> from Israel<MH3478>, for the LORD<MH3068> is fighting<MH3898a> for them against the Egyptians<MH4714>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Moses<MH4872>, &#8220;Reach<MH5186> out<MH5186> with your hand<MH3027> over<MH5921> the sea<MH3220> so that the waters<MH4325> may come<MH7725> back<MH7725> over<MH5921> the Egyptians<MH4714>, over<MH5921> their chariots<MH7393> and their horsemen<MH6571b>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>So Moses<MH4872> reached<MH5186> out<MH5186> with his hand<MH3027> over<MH5921> the sea<MH3220>, and the sea<MH3220> returned<MH7725> to its normal<MH386> state<MH386> at daybreak<MH1242>, while the Egyptians<MH4714> were fleeing<MH5127> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>right<MH7122> into<MH7122> it; then the LORD<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>overthrew<MH5287> the Egyptians<MH4714> in the midst<MH8432> of the sea<MH3220>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/14-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>The waters<MH4325> returned<MH7725> and covered<MH3680> the chariots<MH7393> and the horsemen<MH6571b>, Pharaoh&#8217;s<MH6547> entire<MH3605> army<MH2428> that had gone<MH935> into the sea<MH3220> after<MH310> them;
