for it is written<MG1125>: <p class="indent1stline">‘HE WILL GIVE<MG1781> HIS ANGELS<MG32a> ORDERS<MG1781> CONCERNING<MG4012> YOU’; <p class="R">and <t><p class="indent1">‘ON <i>THEIR</i> HANDS<MG5495> THEY WILL LIFT<MG142> YOU UP, <t><p class="indent1">SO<MG3379> THAT<MG3379> YOU DO NOT<MG3379> STRIKE<MG4350> YOUR FOOT<MG4228> AGAINST<MG4314> A STONE<MG3037>.’” <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Jesus<MG2424> said<MG5346> to him, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>On the other<MG3825> hand<MG3825>, it is written<MG1125>: ‘YOU SHALL NOT PUT<MG1598> THE LORD<MG2962> YOUR GOD<MG2316> TO<MG1598> THE<MG1598> TEST<MG1598>.’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Again<MG3825>, the devil<MG1228> *took<MG3880> Him along<MG3880> to a very<MG3029> high<MG5308> mountain<MG3735> and *showed<MG1166> Him all<MG3956> the kingdoms<MG932> of the world<MG2889> and their glory<MG1391>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>and he said<MG3004> to Him, “All<MG3956> these<MG3778> things<MG3778> I will give<MG1325> You, if<MG1437> You fall<MG4098> down<MG4098> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>worship<MG4352> me.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> Jesus<MG2424> *said<MG3004> to him, “Go<MG5217> away<MG5217>, Satan<MG4567>! For it is written<MG1125>: ‘YOU SHALL WORSHIP<MG4352> THE LORD<MG2962> YOUR GOD<MG2316>, AND <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>SERVE<MG3000> HIM ONLY<MG3441>.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then<MG5119> the devil<MG1228> *left<MG863> Him; and behold<MG2400>, angels<MG32a> came<MG4334> and <i>began to</i> serve<MG1247> Him. <p class="hdg">Jesus Begins His Ministry</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when Jesus heard<MG191> that John<MG2491> had been taken<MG3860> into<MG3860> custody<MG3860>, He withdrew<MG402> into Galilee<MG1056>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>and leaving<MG2641> Nazareth<MG3478>, He came<MG2064> and settled<MG2730> in Capernaum<MG2746b>, which is by the sea<MG3864>, in the region<MG3725> of Zebulun<MG2194> and Naphtali<MG3508>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span><i>This happened</i> so<MG2443> that<MG2443> what<MG3588> was spoken<MG3004> through<MG1223> Isaiah<MG2268> the prophet<MG4396> would be fulfilled<MG4137>: <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>“THE LAND<MG1093> OF ZEBULUN<MG2194> AND THE LAND<MG1093> OF NAPHTALI<MG3508>, <t><p class="indent1"><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>BY THE WAY<MG3598> OF THE SEA<MG2281>, ON THE OTHER<MG4008> SIDE<MG4008> OF THE JORDAN<MG2446>, GALILEE<MG1056> OF THE <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>GENTILES<MG1484>— <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>THE PEOPLE<MG2992> WHO WERE SITTING<MG2521> IN DARKNESS<MG4653> SAW<MG3708> A GREAT<MG3173> LIGHT<MG5457>, <t><p class="indent1">AND THOSE<MG3588> WHO WERE SITTING<MG2521> IN THE LAND<MG5561> AND SHADOW<MG4639> OF DEATH<MG2288>, <t><p class="indent1">UPON THEM A LIGHT<MG5457> DAWNED<MG393>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>From that time<MG5119> Jesus<MG2424> began<MG757> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>preach<MG2784> and say<MG3004>, “Repent<MG3340>, for the kingdom<MG932> of heaven<MG3772> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>is<MG1448> at<MG1448> hand<MG1448>.” <p class="hdg">The First Disciples</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> as <i>Jesus</i> was walking<MG4043> by the Sea<MG2281> of Galilee<MG1056>, He saw<MG3708> two<MG1417> brothers<MG80>, Simon<MG4613>, who was called<MG3004> Peter<MG4074>, and his brother<MG80> Andrew<MG406>, casting<MG906> a net<MG293b> into the sea<MG2281>; for they were fishermen<MG231>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And He *said<MG3004> to them, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>Follow<MG1205, 3694> Me, and I will make<MG4160> you fishers<MG231> of people<MG444>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Immediately<MG2112> they left<MG863> their nets<MG1350> and followed<MG190> Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Going<MG4260> on<MG4260> from<MG1564> there<MG1564> He saw<MG3708> two<MG1417> other<MG243> brothers<MG80>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>James<MG2385> the <i>son</i> of Zebedee<MG2199>, and his brother<MG80> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>John<MG2491>, in the boat<MG4143> with their father<MG3962> Zebedee<MG2199>, mending<MG2675> their nets<MG1350>; and He called<MG2564> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Immediately<MG2112> they left<MG863> the boat<MG4143> and their father<MG3962>, and followed<MG190> Him. <p class="hdg">Ministry in Galilee</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Jesus was going<MG4013> about<MG4013> in all<MG3650> of Galilee<MG1056>, teaching<MG1321> in their synagogues<MG4864> and proclaiming<MG2784> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>gospel<MG2098> of the kingdom<MG932>, and healing<MG2323> every<MG3956> disease<MG3554> and every<MG3956> sickness<MG3119> among<MG1722> the people<MG2992>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/4-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And the news<MG189> about Him spread<MG565> throughout<MG1519, 3650> Syria<MG4947>; and they brought<MG4374> to Him all<MG3956> who were ill<MG2192, 2560>, those suffering<MG4912> with various<MG4164> diseases<MG3554> and severe<MG931> pain<MG931>, demon-possessed<MG1139>, people<MG4583> with<MG4583> epilepsy<MG4583>, and people<MG3885> who were paralyzed<MG3885>;
