Centrifugal slurry pumps are benign used extensively for pipeline transportation systems and phosphate extraction industry because of their capabilities to economically convey large size abrasive solids in bulk. There is a lack of information about the effect of slurry on the performance characteristics of conventional centrifugal pumps when working without and with cavitation. A test rig with a testing centrifugal pump was constructed. The suction pipe between the mixing tank and pump inlet was designed to avoid solid deposition in suction pipe and to keep the pressure loss between the sump and the pump as low as possible. that carry solids through pipelines where the need of head and flow rate is not high. Slurry erosion and cavitation are an extremely complex and not yet fully understood phenomenon that occur in centrifugal pumps; however, these undesirable phenomena can be reduced to a certain extent. Appropriate design and development of experiments is required to reasonably predict slurry erosion and cavitation. However, CFD methodology complements analytical solutions and experiments whenever testing of equipment has limitations. The current paper highlights the various slurry erosion and cavitation reduction techniques utilized by different researchers. An approach to derive the performance behaviour of a vertical centrifugal pump used for transporting dredged slurry based on detail hydraulic loss analysis has been presented in this paper. The design calculations of enclosed impeller are done based on volume flow rate, density of sand water mixture, total head required and pump speed. Based on these parameters the impeller is designed. The 3-D model is generated through the BLADEGEN module of ANSYS 16.0 workbench and the analysis is conducted with the water as flowing medium in fluid flow CFX module. The performance for the solid-liquid mixture by head ratio is predicted accordingly. This method is preferable to other methods because of its user friendly and economic issues. In this article by selecting a proper pump and designing test circuit, we conducted hydraulic tests for water and water mixture with solid particles. For this purpose, an experimental set-up of centrifugal pump with only water and water with solid particles was developed. Then by analyzing the test results and efficiency equation, optimal coefficients of head loss is provided to improve the pump efficiency during hydraulic transmission of solids. The experimental results of power consumption, head, and pressure difference measurements in solid–liquid systems are presented. The experimental set-up results are compared with simulation and numerical one, which show a good agreement with them.
