The late 1960s and early 1970s, when the first volumes of Evolutionary Biology appeared, was an important era in evolutionary biological research. The modern synthesis had matured and the architects of paleobiology and evolutionary developmental biology were just starting their careers. During this period, and partly because of these two new movements, evolutionary biology became richer, more diverse and more complex and the serial Evolutionary Biology was a major forum in which important ideas of the time appeared. Starting with this volume, Evolutionary Biology is being continued in a new format as a quarterly journal. It is timely, therefore, to review the aims, vision and format of the original serial and how the revised journal addresses the current needs and climate of the Tributaries flowing into Evo-Devo came from such disciplines as embryology, developmental genetics, evolutionary biology, ecology, paleontology, systematics, medical embryology and mathematical modeling. This essay will trace one of the major pathways, that from evolutionary embryology to Evo-Devo and it will show the interactions of this pathway with two other sources of Evo-Devo: ecological developmental biology and medical developmental biology. Together, these three fields are forming a more inclusive evolutionary developmental biology that is revitalizing and providing answers to old and important questions involving the formation of biodiversity on Earth.
