In contrast, the importance of good multi-agency and interdisciplinary working and effective communication and information sharing is continually espoused in policy documents and practice guidance. Indeed, effective information sharing is reiterated in the latest edition of the interagency guidance of Working Together to Safeguard Children (HM Government, 2010a) and The Government&#39;s Response to Lord Laming: One Year On (HM Government, 2010b) in England and Wales. The papers included in this issue explore some of the perceived problems around child protection reporting systems. The fi rst paper in this issue by Mike Freel (2010) picks up this issue of communication by exploring how health professionals communicate with children&#39;s social services in an emergency situation. The paper explores the legal and practice issues raised by the case of Baby K who was removed from his mother by hospital staff in Nottinghamshire, UK, shortly after his birth. A later High Court hearing ruled that this action was unlawful. This paper clarifi es the law on emergency protection in England and Wales and the circumstances under which a local authority has the power to remove an infant or child. It also examines parents&#39; consent for removal, as well as potential breaches of human rights by public agencies. Mike Freel usefully outlines the circumstances when an infant or child can be separated from his/her parents without parental consent or a court order. The paper highlights the need for senior managers to ensure that midwives, obstetricians and their managers are fully aware of the legal issues involved when proposing removal of a baby following delivery and that birth plans which &#39;detail how a mother would like to give birth&#39; should not be used for safeguarding (Freel, 2010, p. 166). Perspectives&#39; special interest group in the European Early Childhood Education Research Association (EECERA) reflects a general move in social research towards the respectful and inclusive involvement of children in the research process. However, established education research guidelines often provide no more than a loose ethical framework, appearing to focus on avoiding poor ethical conduct rather than proposing ways forward for making children&#39;s participation in research a positive experience. This short paper draws on my own experiences of conducting ESRC-funded ethnographic video case studies on the ways four 3-year-old children express their understandings at home and in a pre-school playgroup during their first year of early years education. The paper reflects on the processes of negotiating initial and ongoing consent, problematises the notion of &#39;informed&#39; consent in exploratory research with young children, and considers questions of anonymity when collecting and reporting on visual data.
