Starting with an introduction to the field as it has developed, we continue to a series of chapters that take up a number of its aspects. These chapters constitute an anthology of SoTL work by a variety of authors in a variety of contexts. The book is the concrete result of a research collaboration, which spanned three groups of academics from Swedish and South African universities, and was funded by the Swedish Research Council Committee for Educational Science and the South African National Foundation for Research through long-term funding from the Swedish International Development Agency. The three groups of academics were educational researchers with a focus on learning and teaching in higher education, academic developers who are charged with supporting academic staff in developing pedagogical competence, and teachers in the disciplinary and professional subjects of study who have a SoTL interest. They were from the Universities of Gothenburg, Jönköping and Lund in Sweden, and the University of the Witwatersrand and Vaal University of Technology in South Africa. In the chapters they describe their own backgrounds and interests, as well as the results of their research, reflections and own developments in the field. The scope of the project was twofold. First, it was to investigate the constitution of SoTL in consideration of the similarities and differences between national demands and expectations on the one hand, and individual interests and possibilities on the other. Second, it was to research the potential of SoTL as an agent of change in three respects: improving the quality of student learning, transforming the pedagogical practices of institutions of higher education, and potentially transforming society in the age of the knowledge society. class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">When I first started teaching at Wits University in 2000, in my lectures I copied how and what I had been taught by my lecturers. Over the next seventeen years, however, my teaching philosophy and practices have changed considerably as I have reflected on not only how students learn but also the role of learning in the context of the knowledge economy, where they will be taking up jobs we have not yet thought about. According to a World Bank Institute Review (2010: 1) A knowledge-based economy relies primarily on the use of ideas rather than physical abilities and on the application of technology rather than the transformation of raw materials or the exploitation of cheap labor. It is an economy in which knowledge is created, acquired, transmitted, and used more effectively by individuals, enterprises, organizations, and communities to promote economic and social development (World Bank Institute 2001c; World Bank 1998d). This report argues that people who succeed in the knowledge economy are those who develop the ability to engage in lifelong learning by effectively working with the continual stream of new knowledge that is developed and applying it to the changing workplace. In a presentation made to the British Parliament in 2016, the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills argued that excellence in Higher Education is essential for any country to excel in the knowledge economy. This excellence must embrace a re-imagining of what Higher Education is for in a way that it actually prepares students for the new knowledge economy. Put another way, I see my role as a lecturer and a leader in teaching and learning to help both my students and colleagues think about how we prepare for the knowledge economy in Africa, and in the process collectively rethink our teaching content, philosophy and practice. I am guided by the author of Future Shock, Alvin Toffler, who says that &#39;(t)he illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn&#39; (http:// fctl.uct). This conclusion is reached after a teaching experience in a Metallurgy class, with students from a technical school with low interest in learning and studying. Unlike the traditional sequence of teaching materials in which crystalline and atomic models are studied from the literature to later arrive at a phase diagram; this experience begins directly in the laboratory with students doing cooling curves for the alloy of two metals. After this, students make metallographic specimens with the solidification obtained. This experience results in a research activity by which students observe a phenomenon, measure values, verify changes and transform two metals in a number of phases before they study the theory.
