She is a frequent speaker, educator, and trainer who delivers high-energy presentations that challenge audiences to re-examine their beliefs about Autism and re-access outdated and damaging therapy and education practices. Julie’s work focuses on professional, and public education about empathetic evidence-based therapy alternatives to ABA and behavioral therapy models that are non-trauma inducing and respectful of autistic social communication differences, social justice, and human rights. Her articles and educational resources have reached well over three-quarters of a million people and are frequently cited in other presentations and articles.","sameAs":["https://therapistndc.org","https://www.facebook.com/NeurodiversityCollective/","https://www.linkedin.com/in/juliearobertsmscccslp/"],"url":"https://therapistndc.org/author/julie-robertstherapistndc-org/"}]}</script> <!-- / Yoast SEO Premium plugin. --><link rel='dns-prefetch' href='//js.stripe.com' /><link rel='dns-prefetch' href='//use.fontawesome.com' /><link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="Therapist Neurodiversity Collective &raquo; Feed" href="https://therapistndc.org/feed/" /><link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="Therapist Neurodiversity Collective &raquo; Comments Feed" href="https://therapistndc.org/comments/feed/" /><link rel="alternate" type="text/calendar" title="Therapist Neurodiversity Collective &raquo; iCal Feed" href="https://therapistndc.org/events/?ical=1" /><link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="Therapist Neurodiversity Collective &raquo; IEPs, Ableist Goals and Parents&#8217; Rights Comments Feed" href="https://therapistndc.org/ieps-ableist-goals-and-parents-rights/feed/" /> <style id='classic-theme-styles-inline-css'> /*! Additionally, it is clear that our public school system is lagging in knowledge and application of contemporary research evidence about autism, and as a result, the kids are paying the consequences with poor mental health outcomes. </p></div> <a class="elementor-post__read-more" href="https://therapistndc.org/ieps-ableist-goals-and-parents-rights/" aria-label="Read more about IEPs, Ableist Goals and Parents&#8217; Rights" tabindex="-1" > Read More » </a></div></article><article class="elementor-post elementor-grid-item post-8965 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-ethics category-julie-roberts category-social-skills-training tag-actually-autistic tag-autism tag-autistic-acceptance tag-autistic-camouflaging tag-autistic-children tag-autistic-masking tag-autistic-rates-of-suicide tag-autistic-rights tag-autistic-students tag-parents-of-autistic-students tag-social-skills-training pmpro-has-access"> <a class="elementor-post__thumbnail__link" href="https://therapistndc.org/slps-directly-contribute-to-autistic-outcomes-of-trauma-and-suicidality-through-social-skills-training/" tabindex="-1" ><div class="elementor-post__thumbnail"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="300" height="300" src="https://therapistndc.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Lets-focus-on-what-you-want-to-talk-about.-I-am-here-to-please.-300x300.png" class="attachment-medium size-medium wp-image-8967" alt="" srcset="https://therapistndc.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Lets-focus-on-what-you-want-to-talk-about.-I-am-here-to-please.-300x300.png 300w, https://therapistndc.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Lets-focus-on-what-you-want-to-talk-about.-I-am-here-to-please.-150x150.png 150w, https://therapistndc.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Lets-focus-on-what-you-want-to-talk-about.-I-am-here-to-please..png 500w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></div> </a><div class="elementor-post__text"><h3 class="elementor-post__title"> <a href="https://therapistndc.org/slps-directly-contribute-to-autistic-outcomes-of-trauma-and-suicidality-through-social-skills-training/" > SLPs directly contribute to autistic outcomes of trauma and suicidality through social skills training </a></h3><div class="elementor-post__meta-data"> <span class="elementor-post-date"> March 16, 2023 </span> <span class="elementor-post-avatar"> 4 Comments </span></div><div class="elementor-post__excerpt"><p>My hope is this article, if nothing else, ignites some #SLP self-reflection as well as deeper dives into contemporary autism research, especially #TheDoubleEmpathyProblem, #ActuallyAutistic perspectives, and how, despite altruistic intentions, our clinical practices continue to impact trauma on our autistic students and clients.</p></div> <a class="elementor-post__read-more" href="https://therapistndc.org/slps-directly-contribute-to-autistic-outcomes-of-trauma-and-suicidality-through-social-skills-training/" aria-label="Read more about SLPs directly contribute to autistic outcomes of trauma and suicidality through social skills training" tabindex="-1" > Read More » </a></div></article><article class="elementor-post elementor-grid-item post-8827 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-actually-autistic-perspective category-education category-julie-roberts category-social-skills-training tag-actually-autistic tag-asha tag-autism tag-autism-services-in-schools tag-autistic-acceptance tag-autistic-children tag-autistic-students tag-neurodiversity tag-neurodiversity-education tag-neurodiversity-affirming-therapy tag-slp tag-social-skills-training pmpro-has-access"> <a class="elementor-post__thumbnail__link" href="https://therapistndc.org/toxic-social-skills-training-goals/" tabindex="-1" ><div class="elementor-post__thumbnail"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="300" height="300" src="https://therapistndc.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Toxic-SST-500-×-500-px-300x300.png" class="attachment-medium size-medium wp-image-8920" alt="" srcset="https://therapistndc.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Toxic-SST-500-×-500-px-300x300.png 300w, https://therapistndc.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Toxic-SST-500-×-500-px-150x150.png 150w, https://therapistndc.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Toxic-SST-500-×-500-px.png 500w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></div> </a><div class="elementor-post__text"><h3 class="elementor-post__title"> <a href="https://therapistndc.org/toxic-social-skills-training-goals/" > Toxic Social Skills Training Goals, &#8220;Be yourself, but not like that.&#8221; </a></h3><div class="elementor-post__meta-data"> <span class="elementor-post-date"> February 22, 2023 </span> <span class="elementor-post-avatar"> 1 Comment </span></div><div class="elementor-post__excerpt"><p>The vast majority of new-to-me students come with IEPs that have, probably well-meaning, but in actuality, toxic social skills goals. From the information contained in the post, it appeared that the school, although possibly unintentionally, was not aware of IDEA and Supreme Court decisions, and therefore violated parental rights to meaningfully participate in and contribute to the IEP meeting. Additionally, it is clear that our public school system is lagging in knowledge and application of contemporary research evidence about autism, and as a result, the kids are paying the consequences with poor mental health outcomes.\u00a0","featuredImage":"https:\/\/therapistndc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/laptop.png"}}; </script> <style id='tribe-events-pro-views-v2-full-inline-css' class='tec-customizer-inline-style' type='text/css'> :root { /* Customizer-added Global Event styles */ --tec-color-text-events-title: #107896; --tec-color-text-event-title: #107896; --tec-color-text-event-date: #829356; --tec-color-text-secondary-event-date: #829356; --tec-color-link-primary: #107896; --tec-color-link-accent: #107896; --tec-color-link-accent-hover: rgba(16,120,150, 0.8); --tec-color-accent-primary: #da621e; --tec-color-accent-primary-hover: rgba(218,98,30,0.8); --tec-color-accent-primary-multiday: rgba(218,98,30,0.24); --tec-color-accent-primary-multiday-hover: rgba(218,98,30,0.34); --tec-color-accent-primary-active: rgba(218,98,30,0.9); --tec-color-accent-primary-background: rgba(218,98,30,0.07); --tec-color-background-secondary-datepicker: rgba(218,98,30,0.5); --tec-color-accent-primary-background-datepicker: #da621e; --tec-color-button-primary: #da621e; --tec-color-button-primary-hover: rgba(218,98,30,0.8); --tec-color-button-primary-active: rgba(218,98,30,0.9); --tec-color-button-primary-background: rgba(218,98,30,0.07); --tec-color-day-marker-current-month: #da621e; --tec-color-day-marker-current-month-hover: rgba(218,98,30,0.8); --tec-color-day-marker-current-month-active: rgba(218,98,30,0.9); --tec-color-background-primary-multiday: rgba(218,98,30, 0.24); --tec-color-background-primary-multiday-hover: rgba(218,98,30, 0.34); --tec-color-background-primary-multiday-active: rgba(218,98,30, 0.34); --tec-color-background-secondary-multiday: rgba(218,98,30, 0.24); --tec-color-background-secondary-multiday-hover: rgba(218,98,30, 0.34); }:root { /* Customizer-added Events Bar styles */ --tec-color-text-events-bar-input: #2b2b2b; --tec-color-text-events-bar-input-placeholder: #2b2b2b; --tec-opacity-events-bar-input-placeholder: 0.6; --tec-color-text-view-selector-list-item: #2b2b2b; --tec-color-text-view-selector-list-item-hover: #2b2b2b; --tec-color-background-view-selector-list-item-hover: rgba(43,43,43, 0.12); --tec-color-background-events-bar-submit-button: #da621e; --tec-color-background-events-bar-submit-button-hover: rgba(218,98,30, 0.8); --tec-color-background-events-bar-submit-button-active: rgba(218,98,30, 0.9); }:root { /* Customizer-added Month View styles */ --tec-color-border-active-month-grid-hover: #2b2b2b; --tec-color-day-marker-month: #2b2b2b; --tec-color-day-marker-past-month: #2b2b2b; } </style> <script defer src="https://therapistndc.org/wp-content/uploads/siteground-optimizer-assets/siteground-optimizer-combined-js-473a1f55eb32652f21b1d488222b6363.js"></script></body></html>
