And He ate nothing in those days; and, when they were completed, He hungered. <A name="4"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>And the Devil said to Him, "If Thou art God's Son, command this stone, that it become bread." <A name="5"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And Jesus made answer to him, <FR>"It has been written, 'Not on bread alone shall man live.'"<Fr><p> <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And, leading Him up, he showed Him all the kingdoms of the inhabited earth in a moment of time. <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And the Devil said to Him, "To Thee will I give all this authority, and the glory of them; because to me it has been delivered, and to whomsoever I will I give it. <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>If Thou, therefore, wilt worship before me, it shall all be Thine." <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And Jesus, answering, said to him, <FR>"It has been written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.'"<Fr><p> <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And he led Him to Jerusalem, and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, "If Thou art God's Son, cast Thyself down hence;<p> <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>for it has been written, 'He will command His angels concerning you, to keep watch over you;<p> <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>and on their hands they shall bear you up, lest haply you dash your foot against a stone.'"<p> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And Jesus, answering, said to him, <FR>"It has been said, You shall not tempt the Lord your God."<Fr><p> <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And, having completed every temptation, the Devil departed from Him until a <i>fitting</i> season.<p> <A name="15"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Begins His Ministry<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/4.htm#12">Matthew 4:12–17</a>; <a href ="../mark/1.htm#14">Mark 1:14–15</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee; and a report went out concerning Him through all the region round about. <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all.<p> <A name="17"></a><p class="hdg">The Rejection at Nazareth<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/13.htm#53">Matthew 13:53–58</a>; <a href ="../mark/6.htm">Mark 6:1–6</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and He went, according to His custom, into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up to read. <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And there was given to Him a book of the prophet Isaiah; and, opening the book, He found the place where it had been written,<p> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span><FR>"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me; because He anointed Me to publish good tidings to the poor; He hath sent Me to proclaim release to captives, and recovery of sight to <i>the</i> blind, to send away <i>the</i> crushed in freedom.<Fr><p> <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span><FR>to proclaim an acceptable year of <i>the</i> Lord."<Fr> <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And, having closed the book. He gave it back to the attendant, and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on Him. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And He began to say to them, <FR>"To-day has this Scripture been fulfilled in your ears."<Fr> <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And all were bearing witness to Him, and were wondering at the words of grace which proceeded out of His mouth; and they said, "Is not this Joseph's Son?" <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And He said to them, <FR>"Ye will doubtless say to Me this parable, 'Physician, heal Thyself: whatsoever we heard of as done in Capernaum, do also here in Thy own country.'"<Fr> <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And He said, <FR>"Verily I say to you, no prophet is acceptable in his own country.<Fr> <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span><FR>But of a truth I say to you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there came a great famine upon all the land;<Fr> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><FR>and to no one of them was Elijah sent, except to Zarephath in the land of Sidon, to a woman <i>who was</i> a widow.<Fr> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span><FR>"And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and no one of them was cleansed, except Naaman, the Syrian."<Fr> <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And all in the synagogue were filled with wrath, on hearing these things; <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>and, rising up, they cast Him forth out of the city, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, to throw Him down headlong; <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>but He, passing through their midst, was going His way.<p> <A name="32"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Expels an Unclean Spirit<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/1.htm#21">Mark 1:21–28</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee; and He was teaching them on the sabbath; <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>and they were astonished at His teaching, because His word was with authority. <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And in the synagogue there was a man having a spirit of an unclean demon; and he cried out with a loud voice, <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>"Ha! what <i>is there</i> to us and to Thee, Jesus, Nazarene! Didst Thou come to destroy us? I know Thee, Who Thou art, the Holy One of God!" <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And Jesus rebuked it, saying, <FR>"Be silent, and come out from him."<Fr> And the demon, hurling him into the midst, came out from him, having injured him naught. <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And amazement came upon all; and they were talking together, one with another, saying, "What <i>is</i> this word, that with authority and power He commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out!" <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And there was going forth a report concerning Him into every place of the region round about.<p> <A name="39"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Heals at Peter’s House<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/8.htm#14">Matthew 8:14–17</a>; <a href ="../mark/1.htm#29">Mark 1:29–34</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>And, rising up, He went out of the synagogue into the house of Simon. And the mother-in-law of Simon was afflicted with a great fever; and they besought Him concerning her. <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And, standing over her, He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and, immediately rising up, she was ministering to them.<p> <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And, as the sun was setting, all, as many as had <i>any</i> ailing with divers diseases, brought them to Him; and He, laying His hands on each one of them, was healing them. <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/4-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And demons also came out from many, crying out, and saying, "Thou art the Son of God."
