The chapter is concerned with how digital and web-based information and communication technologies can be used to prevent and manage armed violence, foster inclusive societies, and ensure a durable and high-quality peace. The UN is increasingly adopting new technologies, particularly within the field of peacekeeping. To increase situational awareness, UN peacekeeping staff have crowdsourced information and used drones and satellite imagery. In addition, the analysis of peacekeeping data holds great potential for early warning. New technolog ical tools can help foster collaboration, transform attitudes, and give a stronger voice to local communities. Online platforms have been used to monitor elections, document hu man rights abuses, and facilitate communication between members of different sides in a conflict. However, since one cannot simply assume that technology will change every thing for the better, it is crucial to be aware of the ethical implications of the use of new peace technologies. The UN needs to be careful that early warning is translated into ear ly action. Peacekeepers and peacebuilders should also be vigilant when it comes to miti gating the possible abuse and negative side effects of the use of peace technologies. This opportunity for participation is also an opportunity for engaging in new ways with peacebuilding processes. As the field of technology for peacebuilding grows, most attention has been paid to the potential of new technologies for bridging the gap between warning and response. Whilst the focus on the use of technology for early warning and response is important, there is more to this growing field. The empowerment of people to participate in localized conflict management efforts is one of the most significant innovations and opportunities created by new technologies. Technology can contribute to peacebuilding processes by offering tools that foster collaboration, transform attitudes, and give a stronger voice to communities. This article aims to give practitioners two related frameworks to understand how new technologies can enhance peacebuilding. The first section looks at the functions that technology can have in a peacebuilding program as a tool for data processing, communication, engagement, and gaming. In arguing that incorporating contextual, area-specific and conflict-sensitive guidance enhances the quality and depth of innovation, this article calls for a new research approach on Peace Innovation (PI). This approach could help overcome four existing challenges: expanding the scholar–entrepreneur–policy triad of PI; prioritizing ethical, culturally sensitive engagement; designing innovation to more clearly deliver positive impacts in conflict environments; and glocalizing the PI playing field. We then explore five thematic areas where PI can be impactful: forecasting political economies of conflict; business and virtual peacebuilding; climate and environmentalism; migration and identity; and urbanization. Finally, we discuss how to operationalize such partnerships, moving the theoretical discussion on PI forward for both the peacebuilding and innovation communities. Current activities are: • Curricula and content-Members are collaborating to define, create and share curricula for undergraduate minors, professional certificate programs and graduate work; Creating experiential laboratories with industry and practitioner partners; Facilitating information exchange and the symmetry of information/knowledge through globally accessible digital libraries; Incorporating engineering diplomacy, diversity and cultural awareness (including the arts, music and language) into the practice for peacebuilding, peacemaking and peacekeeping. • Research and Development-The group is focused on collaborations, both domestic and international, and internal initiatives that advance the state of Peace Engineering. At the same time, the chapter also highlights those instances by which international actors (organisations and states) seek to co-opt technological advances that debilitate traditional, top-down hierarchies of power and order because they perceive them as a tool that facilitates the erosion of their control. The chapter’s main argument is that technological advances hold great potential for the future of peacebuilding’s praxis and research by including marginalised voices, but it must be born in mind that they are nothing but a tool – meaning that they can be used to promote peace as much as they can be used to foment divisions or instigate and sustain violence. There is a lot of discussion about the impacts and business potential of AI. While the development of AI can bring many benefits, it can also further exaggerate the existing social challenges. Despite this, much less attention is paid on how AI could be utilized to tackle those challenges. The increase in number and complexity of violent conflicts is undoubtedly one of the most wicked problems of today. We are experiencing the biggest number of conflicts in decades, yet the existing solutions for building peace are quickly becoming obsolete. The purpose of this thesis is to understand how AI could be used to support peace. It answers two questions: what are the future opportunity areas for AI in peacebuilding? How can AI peace technology be designed responsibly? The development work identifies where the capabilities of AI and the needs of peacebuilding overlap and develops a set of tools and considerations for responsible design of AI peace technology. While a case study, the results can be applicable also to other sectors where AI is used for solving complex social challenges. The research and the theoretical framework merge several fields of expertise. Peace and conflict studies support the understanding of the needs and context of peacebuilding. Insights on the capabilities and limitations of AI are combined with ideas on how to carry out responsible design and innovation in a collective intelligence setting and with an intended social impact. Peace technology research is used to draw inspiration and validate the findings. The case study research process consists of literature review, five workshops, 15 expert interviews, three design probes and a technology demonstration. Service design methods and iteration are used to develop a set of three canvases for responsible design of AI peace technology. The main part of the data collection for the development work was done as part of Futurice's Peace Machine social responsibility project. This thesis demonstrates that there is potential for AI applications to strategically support the objectives of peacebuilding at different stages of conflict and on various levels. The three future opportunity areas identified are AI assisted conflict analysis, early warning systems and support to human communication. The set of three canvases developed are a checklist of issues that should at least be considered in the responsible design of AI peace technology. AI peace technology is about collective intelligence: combining the strengths of human and machine. This thesis suggests that the human-centered design approach and use of participatory methods should be complemented by systems-minded tools. An integrated framework of design is proposed. An assembly of experts should work together to both define the problem and to create the solutions. The canvases developed help to consider different levels of impact in advance, to place the solutions into their wider ecosystem and to summarize the issues to consider at an early stage of design.
