In the context of Acts 3, Peter is addressing the Jewish audience in Jerusalem, urging them to recognize Jesus as the Messiah. Repentance involves acknowledging one's sins and turning away from them, aligning with the Hebrew concept of "teshuvah," which means to return to God. This call echoes the message of John the Baptist and Jesus Himself, who both began their ministries with a call to repentance (Matthew 3:2, 4:17). The phrase "turn back" suggests a return to God, reminiscent of the Old Testament prophets who called Israel to return to the Lord (Jeremiah 3:12, Hosea 14:1).
so that your sins may be wiped away
The imagery of sins being "wiped away" is powerful, suggesting complete removal and cleansing. This reflects the promise of forgiveness found in the New Covenant, as prophesied in Jeremiah 31:34, where God promises to remember sins no more. The Greek term used here can also mean "blotted out," akin to erasing ink from a parchment, indicating that sins are not merely covered but completely removed. This concept is fulfilled in the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who provides the ultimate atonement for sin (Hebrews 9:26). The idea of sins being wiped away also connects to the Day of Atonement in Leviticus 16, where the high priest would make atonement for the people, prefiguring Christ's atoning work.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Peter
One of Jesus' apostles, who is speaking to the crowd in Jerusalem after healing a lame man at the temple gate called Beautiful.

2. John
Another apostle present with Peter during this event, supporting the message and the miracle.

3. The Temple
The central place of worship in Jerusalem where the apostles often preached and performed miracles.

4. The Lame Man
A man who was healed by Peter and John, which drew the attention of the crowd and set the stage for Peter's sermon.

5. The Crowd
The Jewish people gathered at the temple who witnessed the miracle and heard Peter's call to repentance.
Teaching Points
The Call to Repentance
Repentance is a fundamental step in the Christian journey. The use of the middle voice for "be converted," gives the word the same force as in the "turn yourselves" of the older prophets (Ezekiel 14:6; <a href="/ezekiel/18-30.htm" title="Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, said the Lord GOD. The word and the thought are found in Psalm 51:10; Isaiah 43:25. . . .
Pulpit Commentary
Verse 19. - Turn again for be converted, A.V., with no difference in sense; that so there may come seasons of refreshing for when the times of refreshing shall come, A.V. Turn again. What Peter conceives is that if Israel turns to God at once in the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ, then there will come at once those times of refreshing, those blessed days of righteousness, and peace, and rest, and universal joy, which are the characteristics of Christ's kingdom as foretold by the prophets. Those days are delayed by the unbelief of Israel. Seasons of refreshing. The A.V." times of refreshing" is manifestly right, though there is no article in the Greek.
