Despite common belief that the language possesses contrastive nasal vowels, literature examination shows that nasal vowels may be followed by a nasal resonance, while nasalized vowels must be followed by a nasal consonant. It is argued that the nasal resonance may be the remains of a consonant that nasalizes the vowel, making nasal vowels simply coarticulatorily nasalized (e.g. [1]). If so, vowel nasality should not be more informative for the perception of a word containing a nasal vowel than for a word containing a nasalized vowel, as nasality is attributed to coarticulation. To test this hypothesis, randomized stimuli containing the first syllable of words with oral, nasal and nasalized vowels were presented to BP listeners who had to identify the stimuli original word. Preliminary results demonstrate that accuracy decreased for nasal and nasalized stimuli. High framerate RT-MRI images (50fps) are automatically processed to extract the vocal tract contours and the position/configuration for the different articulators. These data are processed by evolving a quantitative articulatory analysis framework, previously proposed by the authors, extended to include information regarding constrictions (degree and place) and nasal port. The method follows that proposed by Chen (1997), in which acoustic nasality can be measured by the difference between the amplitude of the vowel's first formant (A1), and the amplitude of the nasal peak amplitude in the vowel's first or second harmonic (P0). The measurements were taken at three different time points (start, mid, end) in the vowel. The results show that the main difference between nasal and nasalized vowels is at the vowel's end, the nasal vowel being considered more nasal than its nasalized counterpart. In a first experiment (phonetic) a representative French /A/ and a French /A $/ were synthesized and varied in their nasal features stepwise. Spanish-speaking and French-speaking listeners were asked to tell whether they perceived nasality or not. The results for Spanish show that the separation between the nasal pole and zero is predominant on the formant frequency in the perception of nasality. The influence of bandwidth is negligible. The results for French show an important influence of the pole-zero pair and formant frequency. In a second experiment French-speaking subjects were asked to evaluate the same stimuli as vocalic categories. The results replicate previous observations that duration adjustments affect the vowel's nasalized portion, as is the case for languages in which the speaker intends nasalization. The second hypothesis is that adjustments in duration as a function of the following onset do not affect the nasalization duration, but only the timing of a nasal gesture relatively constant in duration. Results show that irrespective of the following consonant ([s] or [t]), nasalization remains constant in duration. However, a shorter nasal murmur or a more extended postnasal consonantal oral portion does not follow more extended vowel nasalization. As the entire VNC sequence increases on an individual basis, so does the nasalization. Still, increasing nasalization comes at a cost for the duration of the oral part of the vowel irrespective of [s, t].
