Section I introduces Socrates\u0026amp;#39; argument from the Crito that our experience of self-identical self-possession is not our given nature, but that our ability to be ourselves comes from making a home in the laws. Section II draws on Heidegger and Derrida to argue that this very effort to be ourselves, to be at home, requires nonetheless that we answer to the other: the alien is not something to which we can be indifferent. Section III cashes out the implications of these analyses in an argument for our irreducible ethnocentricity, and, drawing on Derrida\u0026amp;#39;s _Rogues_, considers how the political imperative of hospitality can be interpreted in this context. Section IV, finally, argues that it is cosmopolitan political settings that offer us the healthiest environment for cultivating the political habits of plasticity that are essential to our multicultural political world. I conclude that it is precisely such existentially healthy homemaking that ultimately captures the essential spirit of Socrates\u0026amp;#39; own approach to making his home in the laws.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Kirsten For hospitality to be operative, or to be something enact-able, it is contingent on having a home from which one offers hospitality. Invasion of these boundaries conjures hostility. Yet hospitality without extending itself to the foreigner-outside and in excess of known categories and boundaries is not hospitality, a limited welcome defeats its own purpose. Therefore, to put it very simply, hospitality as unconditional necessitates opening hospitality beyond the home and family. But where does this leave us? It is this question after the question that is what I want to consider here today – the door [inside the door?] to be opened after we have crossed the threshold and embraced what Derrida has given us. My paper has two sections: I will first briefly discuss why hospitality is relevant in the context of irregular migrant labourers. Secondly, I will outline how Derrida’s hospitality invites the question of home, while at the same time ripping the welcome mat out from under our feet. At this irreconcilable threshold between hostility and welcome, hospitality can be conceptualised as nothing but inoperative.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Welcoming a Revisit Of Hospitality: Opening doors beyond Derrida","attachmentId":18969947,"attachmentType":"doc","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/1232023/Welcoming_a_Revisit_Of_Hospitality_Opening_doors_beyond_Derrida","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/1232023/Welcoming_a_Revisit_Of_Hospitality_Opening_doors_beyond_Derrida"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="1" data-entity-id="75203999" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/75203999/Mr_Socrates_Goes_to_Washington_The_Care_of_the_Self_and_the_Cultivation_of_Citizenship_in_Late_Modernity">Mr. Socrates Goes to Washington: The Care of the Self and the Cultivation of Citizenship in Late-Modernity</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="34157768" href="https://oxy.academia.edu/MichaelChristopherSardo">Michael Christopher Sardo</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">2011</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">This project will make three main claims. First, late-modern democracies present citizens with a unique set of challenges that require rethinking the conception of citizenship as a static category that simply classifies individuals. Instead, I will contend that citizenship must be understood as a process, in which citizens must continually work upon themselves to vivify democratic institutions and act democratically in spheres outside of politics as generally understood. Second, citizens should cultivate a particular ethos of what Stephen White calls presumptive generosity, which is intended as an initial response designed to restrain the resentment and hostility we otherwise tend to bring into public engagement. This ethos challenges ones own identity claims, and is focused on the presencing of difference and the proliferation of identity claims. This article looks at the theme of hospitality with a focus on the work of two twentieth-century French philosophers, Emmanuel Levinas and Jacques Derrida. It begins with a presentation of some of Levinas' Jewish writings relevant to the theme. These writings display Levinas' understanding of the nature of freedom in regard to the other, who holds me hostage. Yet, the article argues, this leaves Levinas still to some extent bound by the I, even the I as hostage. The dilemma is further investigated with reference to Jacques Derrida, starting with his own reflections on Levinas. The article then outlines Derrida's own ideas on hospitality, asking how to reconcile the impossible demands of pure hospitality with the conditional forms it takes in our societies. The conclusion asks what the two writers have to say to European societies in their current encounters with refugees and migrants.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link Focusing on Homer and later Tragedians, it charts ancient literature’s deep interest in the tensions of balancing obligations to provide hospitality and asylum, and the responsibilities of well-being owed to host-citizens by their leaders. Such discourse appears central at key transformative moments, such as the Greek polis democracy of the fifth century BCE, hospitality becoming the marker between civic society and the international community, confronting the space between civil and human rights. At its center was the question of: Who is the host? The article goes on to question whether the seventeenth-century advent of the nation state was such a moment, and whether in the twenty-first century we observe a shift towards states’ treatment of their own subjects as primary in measuring society, with hospitality becoming the exception to be explained.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Isayev, E. One of the most important issues confronting many Western countries is migration. However, we also face complex attitudes to migrants - strangers crossing borders in the face of so much uncertainty in the hope of finding a better life than they had in their own nations. The concept of inviting strangers into one's home and nation has gotten a lot of attention in recent years. We have heard several instances of both animosity and friendliness. In terms of the migratory scenario - welcoming newcomers - all philosophers agree that our hospitality shapes our moral attitude toward others. They differ, however, in how they approach meeting and welcoming individuals. In this piece, I'd want to discuss what it means to reciprocate (hospitality) in the deconstructionist tradition of continental philosopher Jacques Derrida. I also employ Kearney's hermeneutical technique to highlight or criticise some flaws in Derrida's concept of hospitality.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Derrida's Account on Hospitality","attachmentId":77865173,"attachmentType":"docx","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/66818154/Derridas_Account_on_Hospitality","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/66818154/Derridas_Account_on_Hospitality"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="8" data-entity-id="120134828" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/120134828/Jacques_Derrida_on_the_Aporias_of_Hospitality">Jacques Derrida on the Aporias of Hospitality</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="708143" href="https://uoa.academia.edu/GerasimosKakoliris">Gerasimos Kakoliris</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">Palgrave Macmillan, 2024</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">The book systematically presents Derrida’s views on hospitality, as reflected in his texts and lectures from 1995 until his death in October 2004. Derrida’s engagement with hospitality is perhaps the most important and extensive philosophical attempt to respond critically to the growing hostility of many governments worldwide towards specific categories of foreigners, such as refugees and immigrants. Particular emphasis is placed on the ‘aporetic’ nature of hospitality that Derrida describes: namely, that, on the one hand, the provision of hospitality brings us face to face with the hyper-ethical ‘law’ of ‘unconditional hospitality,’ which requires the unconditional reception of the other, i.e. the provision of hospitality to the foreigner without conditions, restrictions or expecting anything in return. On the other hand, the provision of hospitality forces us to face the ‘conditional’ laws of hospitality, which, while establishing a right to and a duty of hospitality, simultaneously restrict hospitality by setting conditions for the arrival and stay of the foreigner. The book also analyses the ‘decision’ and the ‘event’ of hospitality, as well as the unresolved ‘aporia’ at the heart of the ethics of hospitality (or of ethics in general), an aporia or contradiction related to the fact that we cannot be hospitable towards a singularity without ‘sacrificing’ some other singularities. Attention is paid to Derrida’s attempt to open the provision of hospitality beyond humans, that is, to other living beings. Derrida’s views on hospitality are examined in the book in the light of the philosophical thought of Emmanuel Levinas, Immanuel Kant and René Schérer.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Jacques Derrida on the Aporias of Hospitality","attachmentId":118587449,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/120134828/Jacques_Derrida_on_the_Aporias_of_Hospitality","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/120134828/Jacques_Derrida_on_the_Aporias_of_Hospitality"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="9" data-entity-id="3665100" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/3665100/Re_Orienting_Democratic_Hospitality">Re-Orienting Democratic Hospitality</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="981690" href="https://uts.academia.edu/ElaineKelly">Elaine Kelly</a></div><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Re-Orienting Democratic Hospitality","attachmentId":31356592,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/3665100/Re_Orienting_Democratic_Hospitality","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/3665100/Re_Orienting_Democratic_Hospitality"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":57114334,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":57114334,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_57114334" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
