Czy jednak jego powstanie kiedykolwiek było realne? Kiedy Harry Harrison przygotowywał się do napisania tej książki nie zadawał sobie ulubionego pytania miłośników historii alternatywnej: „Co by było gdyby…”. Zamiast tego zastanowił się „w jakich realiach powstanie takiego tunelu byłoby możliwe, opłacalne i potrzebne”. I tak zaczął snuć wizję sytuacji geopolitycznej w alternatywnych latach 70 XX wieku.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;">Podczas gdy w naszej rzeczywistości siedem dekad nowego stulecia wystarczyło do zburzenia dawnego porządku, w uniwersum Harrisona wciąż odczuwalne są echa epoki wiktoriańskiej. Stany Zjednoczone nigdy nie ogłosiły niepodległości, a Ameryka pozostaje brytyjską kolonią. Nieprzypadkowo główny bohater i projektant tytułowego tunelu nazywa się Waszyngton. W tym porządku nie może jednak nosić tego nazwiska z dumą – jego sławnego przodka rozstrzelano za zdradę przeciwko koronie. W miarę prowadzenia narracji pisarz ujawnia jeszcze wcześniejsze historyczne różnice, tworząc całkiem wiarygodne, ciągnące się przynajmniej od XII wieku, fundamenty pod budowę tej konkretnej historii. Kiedy fabuła powieści zostaje usprawiedliwiona tłem historycznym, pozostaje nam poznać ekonomię świata przedstawionego i całkowicie racjonalne argumenty za koniecznością powstania tunelu kolejowego pod Atlantykiem. Dokładnie tak! Skala wyobraźni Harrisona jest nieprawdopodobna. Jak już wspomniałem, powieść nie jest osadzona w fantastycznym XIX wieku, a w alternatywnej współczesności (z perspektywy autora). Rewolucja seksualna oszczędziła społeczeństwo tego świata. Chociaż konie z ulic wyparły mechaniczne silniki, to zaprzęgane są do poruszania dorożek. Istnieją także samoloty, jednak bardziej przypominają luksusowe morskie liniowce. Dochodzi nawet do pierwszych, nieśmiałych prób podbicia kosmosu. Jednocześnie obliczenia wykonywane są na potężnych maszynach analitycznych według projektu Babbage’a, a podstawą przekazu informacji są fale radiowe.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;">Harrison nie schodzi pod ziemię dopóki nie pozna szczegółów podmorskiej gleby, ani nie ustali jakimi maszynami dysponują budowniczy tego świata. Szczegółowe opisy maszyn i technik budowy wypełniają szczelnie większość stron „Tunelu…”. Zresztą oddajmy głos samemu pisarzowi.</p> <blockquote> <p style="text-align: justify;">Na czele flotylli pojazdów podwodnych płynął Nautilus II, o wiele większy i bardziej uniwersalny niż unicestwiony poprzednik. Jego załoga liczyła trzydziestu ludzi. Tylko garstka z nich obsługiwała sam statek, w wysokim stopniu zautomatyzowany, większość miała w swej pieczy wyposażenie robocze. Od zaczepów w kilu biegły stalowe liny tworzące długi na milę hol. Automatyczne czujniki monitorowały jego naprężenie, a otrzymywane z nich informacje trafiały do gigantycznego komputera systemu Babbage’a. Maszyna zbierała też dane o kablach podczepionych do innych jednostek i tak modyfikowała ich szybkość, aby flotylla poruszała się niczym jeden organizm. Komputer zajmował prawie jedną czwartą przestrzeni Nautilusa II i za jedyny środek łączności służyły mu wiązki jednorodnego światła z licznych, zamocowanych na kadłubie laserów. Bez trudu przenikały całkiem klarowną na tej głębokości wodę, przenosząc modulowanymi sygnałami dowolne informacje. Wszystko to działało bez zarzutu dzięki geniuszowi jednego człowieka, który bez reszty poświęcił się budowie, szczególną uwagę zwracając na konstrukcję ostatniej sekcji.</p> </blockquote> <p style="text-align: justify;">Ten losowo wybrany fragment chyba najlepiej pokazuje z jakim dziełem mamy do czynienia. Tytuł obiecuje historię o alternatywnej infrastrukturze. Fabuła spełnia tę obietnicę dosłownie. To wyjątkowy przykład fantastyki budowlanej i Harrison w pełni korzysta z możliwości opowiadania czytelnikom o wymyślonym przez siebie, podmorskim placu budowy. Ja czytając to bawiłem się doskonale, jednak nie mogę udawać, że w tej formie nie ucierpiały pozostałe elementy fabuły – bohaterowie, czy po prostu napięcie, ginące gdzieś między kładzionymi na dnie Atlantyku modułami tunelu.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-597" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20160215144501im_/http://steampunk.info.pl/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/tunel-1.jpg" alt="tunel" width="660" height="280" srcset="https://web.archive.org/web/20160215144501im_/http://steampunk.info.pl/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/tunel-1-300x127.jpg 300w, https://web.archive.org/web/20160215144501im_/http://steampunk.info.pl/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/tunel-1.jpg 660w" sizes="(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px"/></p> <p style="text-align: justify;">Gorące uczucia, podłe spiski i machinacje polityczne. Problem w tym, że kiedy Harrison zaczyna je już rysować przed czytelnikiem, po chwili kompletnie je porzuca, by opisać kolejny element fantastycznej technologii.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;">Mi wystarczyło to, abym był zachwycony lekturą. Normalny czytelnik prawdopodobnie rzuciłby książką w kąt i poszukał na półce czegoś ciekawszego. I tu tkwi zarówno piękno, jak i przekleństwo „Tunelu transatlantyckiego”.</p> <p style="text-align: justify;">Poziom hermetyczności tej książki jest niewyobrażalna, dopóki się w nią nie wczytamy. To powieść, której z czystym sumieniem wystawiam najwyższą notę, ale jednocześnie nie mogę jej nikomu polecić.
