Their etymology, history, social meaning, methods of production and uses are representative of local communities and cultural traditions that need to survive and flourish in the age of globalisation. Traditional African textiles, coming from a long tradition of weaving and relating to philosophy, oral literature, history, ethics, religious belief, and political thoughts, are an example of tangible (fabric) and intangible (art of weaving) Cultural Heritage to be safeguarded by their knowledge and use. This is the case of Kente cloth, one of the most famous and precious hand-woven African fabrics: crafted since the 17th century by village communities of the Ashanti Region and worn by Ghanaian kings, this ceremonial fabric is still considered a luxury item and a cultural asset to be protected. In the last few centuries, the African emigrants’ displacement has favoured traditional fabrics knowledge worldwide, but their perception and meaning have changed within new global contexts and communities: promoting creativity applied to traditional fabrics for actualising their use while respecting values and tradition is now challenging. This paper illustrates “Korai x Kente”, a fashion eco-design and eco-craft project of inclusive and sustainable business, developed between Ghana and Sicily by the Italian Cultural and Creative Industry “Kòrai – Territorio, Sviluppo e Cultura”, and endorsed by the Honorary Consulate of Ghana in Sicily. The project, aimed at promoting the traditional Kente cloth and the integration among different cultures, focuses on social innovation and interculturalism, involves weavers of local communities in Ghana producing the Kente cloth and Sicilian designers and craftsmen creating traditional and contemporary eco-design and eco-craft objects in Kente, whose cultural values are also shared on a web platform. The project even supports women in Ghana to start a job by micro-credit.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Susanna Gristina"}],"contributor":[],"dateCreated":"2020-08-29","dateModified":null,"datePublished":"2020-01-01","headline":"THE “KORAI X KENTE” PROJECT: TURNING THE HANDMADE GHANAIAN KENTE CLOTH FROM A LOCAL EXPRESSION OF CULTURAL IDENTITY TO A CONTEMPORARY CREATIVE FASHION TOOL BY INVOLVING COMMUNITIES BETWEEN GHANA AND SICILY","inLanguage":"en","keywords":["Design","Fashion design","Cultural Heritage","Sustainable Development","Woven Textiles","Craft Knowledge","Intangible Cultural Heritage (Culture)","Science for Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage","Social Innovation","Patrimonio Cultural","Interculturalism","Cross-culture, multiculturalism, cultural hybridisation, ethnocentrism, and sub-cultures","Social Entrepreneurship \u0026 Innovation","Kente Cloth"],"locationCreated":null,"publication":"Cerami F., Scaduto M.L:, De Tommasi A. The Ghanaians have a rich cultural heritage that they cherish most. This cultural heritage could be seen through the way they dress during occasions such as funerals, weddings, festivals, durbars and naming ceremonies. Some of the fabrics that people wear during these occasions are Kente cloths, "nteimu" and "kuntukuni" cloths (clothes stamped with locally prepared dyes). The Kente, "nteimu" and "kuntukuni" are locally produced by the people of Bonwire, Adawonmase and Ntonso. Although these clothes have some special designs and motifs that make them unique and aesthetically pleasing, they have not been effectively and comprehensively researched. This study intends to identify and describe the various designs and motifs in these fabrics, and then give the philosophical meanings associated with the designs and the motifs in them. The descriptive research design which is under the qualitative research approach was espoused to accomplish the goal and purpose of the study. In all, 20 woven Kente fabrics were sampled for the study using a purposive sampling technique. Of these, 5 were used for festival celebrations, 5 for marriage ceremonies, 5 for funeral celebrations and 5 for durbars and parties. The primary data was collected using interviews, observations and opinionnaire. The results showed that designs and motifs which are seen in the Kente cloths have philosophical meaning that can help one to understand his or her culture. In addition, some of the motifs and designs used to produce the various fabrics exhibit the creative abilities of our forefathers and their belief system. Also, the research revealed that some of the designs and motifs are used for prestigious and aesthetic purposes.

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

From Tradition to Innovation: Indigenous West African Textiles in Creative Interior Application
Cynthia Kusi

2018

This design experiments convert indigenous West African textile design elements from a limited application in clothing into a breadth of interior design pieces that are expected to have a wider appeal. Textile designing is an integral part of textile production in West Africa and by far the most predominant art practice in the region. Textile production techniques vary from one place to another in the region and some of the common techniques are tie-dyeing, tritik, batik, indigo dying, embroidery, patchwork, applique, discharge dyeing, direct printing and resist printing. Designs are developed from sources such as body paintings and tattooing, indigenous symbols, proverbs, occasions and major events, important personalities, natural and artificial objects. Other textile design forms have also evolved from textures produced by the actual processes of fabric construction and the effects of colour variations of yarns such as stripes, bars and checks. The first projects were directed to give a new life to the companies' stock leftovers, scraps and pieces not accepted by the market, and leftovers from cutting that would be transformed into waste. In the last months, with the event of the pandemic caused by COVID 19, this option also stands out in consulting requests, after all, staying at home suggests a new look for the closet. Discussion about cultural sustainability and heritage preservation requires conservation and regeneration of the cultural beliefs and symbolic meanings embedded within the traditional processes and practices of craft. With meaning tied to place, and the evolution of ideas, attitudes, and practices, local knowledge of traditional handcrafts can be considered as a sustainable repository of culture. The purpose of this study is to interpret the most developed craft-based strategies in the field of fashion to promote positive and sustainable change and to disassociate from the practice of cultural appropriation. Through the presentation of selected case studies in the fields of fashion, design, and craftsmanship, this article provides an interpretative model for cultural sustainability through traditional craft. With a focus on the incorporation and valorization of material practices and knowledge in fashion, the proposition for design to act as a promoter of innovative processes and the nurturing and retaining of craft can ensue. This speculative model is built on case studies on cultural sustainability through traditional craft. It is focused on experimentation, innovation, and sustainability through the design and creative process expressed through cultural heritage strategies. The result is a range of possible outcomes, aligned with existing craft practices, that highlight opportunities for design to support traditional craft through innovative processes while maintaining their embedded codes.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button"
