The Ghanaians have a rich cultural heritage that they cherish most. This cultural heritage could be seen through the way they dress during occasions such as funerals, weddings, festivals, durbars and naming ceremonies. Some of the fabrics that people wear during these occasions are Kente cloths, "nteimu" and "kuntukuni" cloths (clothes stamped with locally prepared dyes). The Kente, "nteimu" and "kuntukuni" are locally produced by the people of Bonwire, Adawonmase and Ntonso. Although these clothes have some special designs and motifs that make them unique and aesthetically pleasing, they have not been effectively and comprehensively researched. This study intends to identify and describe the various designs and motifs in these fabrics, and then give the philosophical meanings associated with the designs and the motifs in them. The descriptive research design which is under the qualitative research approach was espoused to accomplish the goal and purpose of the study. In all, 20 woven Kente fabrics were sampled for the study using a purposive sampling technique. Of these, 5 were used for festival celebrations, 5 for marriage ceremonies, 5 for funeral celebrations and 5 for durbars and parties. The primary data was collected using interviews, observations and opinionnaire. The results showed that designs and motifs which are seen in the Kente cloths have philosophical meaning that can help one to understand his or her culture. In addition, some of the motifs and designs used to produce the various fabrics exhibit the creative abilities of our forefathers and their belief system. Also, the research revealed that some of the designs and motifs are used for prestigious and aesthetic purposes.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Emblematic Interpretation of the Designs of Selected Kente Fabrics among Ashanti People of Ghana","attachmentId":105297863,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/105978636/Emblematic_Interpretation_of_the_Designs_of_Selected_Kente_Fabrics_among_Ashanti_People_of_Ghana","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Consumers' Preferences for Contemporary Textile to Handcrafted Textile Products in Abeokuta South Western Nigeria: A Case Study of Group Outfit (Aso-Ebi
Akinmoye Oluwambe

Online Journal of Art and Design, 2016

Handcrafted textile products include aso-oke, adire, batik and tritik. These products are made by hands, often with the use of simple tools, and generally artistic and traditional in nature. The use of handcrafted textile products as group outfits among the Yoruba to commemorate important events such as weddings, birthdays, funerals, anniversaries, and festivals is an age long culture. The cultural and socioeconomic benefits attached to this phenomenon are so huge in those days. This study delved into the investigation into preference of consumers between the demand for handcrafted and contemporary textile products as group outfits, factors responsible for the low or high patronage of handcrafted textile products as group outfits, availability of uniform design of handcrafted textile products at market stores in Abeokuta, Southwestern Nigeria. Responses were elicited from the handcrafted textile consumers in Abeokuta. All the 83 (100%) questionnaires administered to the consumers were completely returned. The data gathered were subjected to statistical analysis, using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 16 software. The findings of the study revealed that the handcrafted textile products are acceptable as group outfits among the populace because of its unparallel aesthetic, cultural, and prestigious values. However, its uses as group outfits in Abeokuta, Southwestern Nigeria are considerably at the low ebb because of many factors. In view of the field response of consumers, there is the need for efforts to be taken by the local producers to produce in large quantity and improve on the quality Online Journal of Art and Design volume 4, issue 4, 2016 16 material in order to breakthrough. The appreciation, patronage and uses of home-made textile products as group outfit should be encouraged because it has the potential to boost the economy of the local community in particular and Nigeria in general.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Consumers' Preferences for Contemporary Textile to Handcrafted Textile Products in Abeokuta South Western Nigeria: A Case Study of Group Outfit (Aso-Ebi","attachmentId":61807338,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/41654338/Consumers_Preferences_for_Contemporary_Textile_to_Handcrafted_Textile_Products_in_Abeokuta_South_Western_Nigeria_A_Case_Study_of_Group_Outfit_Aso_Ebi","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

THE “KORAI X KENTE” PROJECT: TURNING THE HANDMADE GHANAIAN KENTE CLOTH FROM A LOCAL EXPRESSION OF CULTURAL IDENTITY TO A CONTEMPORARY CREATIVE FASHION TOOL BY INVOLVING COMMUNITIES BETWEEN GHANA AND SICILY
Susanna Gristina

Cerami F., Scaduto M.L:, De Tommasi A. Their etymology, history, social meaning, methods of production and uses are representative of local communities and cultural traditions that need to survive and flourish in the age of globalisation. Traditional African textiles, coming from a long tradition of weaving and relating to philosophy, oral literature, history, ethics, religious belief, and political thoughts, are an example of tangible (fabric) and intangible (art of weaving) Cultural Heritage to be safeguarded by their knowledge and use. This is the case of Kente cloth, one of the most famous and precious hand-woven African fabrics: crafted since the 17th century by village communities of the Ashanti Region and worn by Ghanaian kings, this ceremonial fabric is still considered a luxury item and a cultural asset to be protected. In the last few centuries, the African emigrants’ displacement has favoured traditional fabrics knowledge worldwide, but their perception and meaning have changed within new global contexts and communities: promoting creativity applied to traditional fabrics for actualising their use while respecting values and tradition is now challenging. This paper illustrates “Korai x Kente”, a fashion eco-design and eco-craft project of inclusive and sustainable business, developed between Ghana and Sicily by the Italian Cultural and Creative Industry “Kòrai – Territorio, Sviluppo e Cultura”, and endorsed by the Honorary Consulate of Ghana in Sicily. The project, aimed at promoting the traditional Kente cloth and the integration among different cultures, focuses on social innovation and interculturalism, involves weavers of local communities in Ghana producing the Kente cloth and Sicilian designers and craftsmen creating traditional and contemporary eco-design and eco-craft objects in Kente, whose cultural values are also shared on a web platform. The project even supports women in Ghana to start a job by micro-credit.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" role in meeting man’s basic needs. Textiles are important in all aspects of our lives from birth to death. Based on the study of Chaniotakis et al (2010), factors that influencing consumers’ purchase intention are ‘consumers’ attitudes’, ‘extrinsic factors’ and ‘intrinsic factors’ of the products. Consumer behaviour can be broadly classified as the decisions and actions that influence the purchasing behaviour of a consumer and have direct impact on the industry for its growth and development. Hence Ghana is the heart of West Africa and as a result of globalization in trade, there is high influx of foreign textiles coupled with the local textiles industry. The trade statistics in the trade industrialization in Ghana highlights two parallel production of local textiles industry: locally made textiles fabric and the industrialised printed ones. This has been one of the means of portraying ones culture inclination This project will not only serve as a source of information to the textiles industry but will enable the interested parties in the creative industries improve upon the quality and aesthetic meaning with regards to the choice of colour and the traditional value of textiles products. Strategically the research employed five stages split out in chapters to conclude the findings. Chapter one introduce the background of the study. It looked at the statement of the problem, purpose of the study as well as the significance of the study. Related literature had been reviewed in line with the study. The researcher used observational descriptive survey as research design. A stratified random sampling was also used for the study and a sample size of 100 consisting of 40 general public, 30 event planner, 20 textiles merchants and 10 textiles industries. The main instrument used for the study was questionnaire of which 88 respondents responded. The result indicated a high ignorance on the symbolic meaning with regards to foreign textiles patterns and the best associated colours to be used across all the categories of the sampled population. Findings connotes that people choose textiles design out of taste and popularity. The researcher therefore recommended that enough education on the symbolic meaning of textiles patterns in line with the traditional custom be given to both event planners, textiles merchants and the general public. This will help beef up the performances of the local textiles industries with regards to high consumer preference to specific functions to correspond the cultural tradition of Ghanaian.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"EVALUATING THE INFLUENTIAL PURCHASING POWER OF CONSUMER BETWEEN TRADITIONAL AND INDUSTRIAL PRINTED TEXTILES FABRIC","attachmentId":56910413,"attachmentType":"docx","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/36960429/EVALUATING_THE_INFLUENTIAL_PURCHASING_POWER_OF_CONSUMER_BETWEEN_TRADITIONAL_AND_INDUSTRIAL_PRINTED_TEXTILES_FABRIC","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Effects of Perception on Consumer Purchase Intention of Traditional Textiles in Ogun state, Nigeria
Alidu Kareem

Journal of Economics, Management and Trade, 2019

Aims: To identify perceived product attributes influencing consumer purchase intention; determine the relationship between shopping experience and consumer purchase intention and examine the influence of product understanding on consumption of traditional textiles in Nigeria textiles industry. A qualitative descriptive design was employed to determine reasons that might account for patronage of secondhand goods over traditionally produced items or vice versa by considering Lyon’s “Models of customer choice” framework. An inductive thematic analysis was employed through in-depth interviews to collect and analyze data from 28 Participants using purposive and accidental sampling techniques. The findings identified higher patronage of secondhand goods over the traditionally produced ones within the metropolis. Factors identified include low-income level of consumers, high taste for foreign goods, high cost of locally produced textiles, lack of patriotism, among others, as main reasons for the high patronage of secondhand goods compared to items produced traditionally within the metropolis. Interventions suggested were lowering the importation of secondhand goods or placing total ban on them, others suggested that stakeholders must make efforts to improve on indigenous technologies to enhance and speed up production processes in the weaving, dyeing and printing sectors, developed means of producing raw materials locally for the industry thereby reducing the overall cost of end products.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Exploring factors influencing consumer preference for secondhand clothing over traditionally produced textiles goods in the Tamale metropolis in Ghana","attachmentId":118290950,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/123951153/Exploring_factors_influencing_consumer_preference_for_secondhand_clothing_over_traditionally_produced_textiles_goods_in_the_Tamale_metropolis_in_Ghana","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

The effect of product attributes on consumer purchasing decision: the case of Ethiopian traditional wears in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Afework Teshome

2019

The research focused on apparel attributes that may affect consumer purchasing decision to Ethiopian traditional fashions in Addis Ababa.
