they shall eat<MH398> the LORD’S<MH3068> offerings<MH801> by<MH801> fire<MH801> and His <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>property<MH5159>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>They shall not have<MH1961> an inheritance<MH5159> among<MH7130> their countrymen<MH251>; the LORD<MH3068> is their inheritance<MH5159>, as He <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>promised<MH1696> them. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>“Now this<MH2088> shall be the priests’<MH3548> portion<MH4941> from the people<MH5971a>, from those who offer<MH2076> a sacrifice<MH2077>, either<MH518> an ox<MH7794> or<MH518> a sheep<MH7716>: they shall give<MH5414> the priest<MH3548> the shoulder<MH2220>, the two<MH3895> cheeks<MH3895>, and the stomach<MH6896>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>You shall give<MH5414> him the first<MH7225> fruits<MH7225> of your grain<MH1715>, your new<MH8492> wine<MH8492>, and your oil<MH3323>, and the first<MH7225> fleece<MH1488> of your sheep<MH6629>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>For the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430> has chosen<MH977> him and his sons<MH1121> from all<MH3605> your tribes<MH7626>, to stand<MH5975> to serve<MH8334> in the name<MH8034> of the LORD<MH3068> always<MH3605, 3117>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>“Now if<MH3588> a Levite<MH3881> comes<MH935> from any<MH259> of your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>towns<MH8179> throughout<MH4480, 3605> Israel<MH3478> where<MH834, 8033> he resides<MH1481a>, and he comes<MH935> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>whenever<MH3605> he desires<MH185> to the place<MH4725> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> chooses<MH977>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>then he shall serve<MH8334> in the name<MH8034> of the LORD<MH3068> his God<MH430>, like all<MH3605> his fellow<MH251> Levites<MH3881> who stand<MH5975> there<MH8033> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>They shall eat<MH398> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>equal<MH2506> portions<MH2506>, except<MH905> for <i>what they receive</i> from the sale<MH4465> of their fathers’<MH1> <i>estates.</i> <p class="hdg">Spiritism Forbidden</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>“When<MH3588> you enter<MH935> the land<MH776> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430> is giving<MH5414> you, you shall not learn<MH3925> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>imitate<MH6213a> the detestable<MH8441> things<MH8441> of those<MH1992a> nations<MH1471>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>There shall not be found<MH4672> among you <i>anyone</i> who makes his son<MH1121> or his daughter<MH1323> pass<MH5674a> through the fire<MH784>, one who uses<MH7080> divination<MH7081>, a soothsayer<MH6049a>, one who interprets<MH5172> omens<MH5172>, or a sorcerer<MH3784>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>or one who casts<MH2266> a spell<MH2267>, or a medium<MH7592, 178>, or a spiritist<MH3049>, or one who consults<MH1875> the dead<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>For whoever<MH3605> does<MH6213a> these<MH428> things<MH428> is detestable<MH8441> to the LORD<MH3068>; and because<MH1558> of these<MH428> detestable<MH8441> things<MH8441> the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430> is going to drive<MH3423> them out<MH3423> before<MH6440> you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>You are to be blameless<MH8549> before<MH5973> the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>For these<MH428> nations<MH1471>, which<MH834> you are going to dispossess<MH3423>, listen<MH8085> to soothsayers<MH6049a> and diviners<MH7080>, but as for you, the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430> has not allowed<MH5414> you <i>to do</i> so<MH3651>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>“The LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430> will raise<MH6965> up<MH6965> for you a prophet<MH5030> like<MH3644> me from among<MH7130> you, from your countrymen<MH251>; to him you shall listen<MH8085>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span><i>This is</i> in accordance with everything<MH3605> that you asked<MH7592> of the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430> at Horeb<MH2722> on the day<MH3117> of the assembly<MH6951>, saying<MH559>, ‘Do not let me hear<MH8085> the voice<MH6963> of the LORD<MH3068> my God<MH430> again<MH3254>, and do not let me see<MH7200> this<MH2088> great<MH1419> fire<MH784> anymore<MH5750>, or<MH3808> I will die<MH4191>!’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to me, ‘They have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>spoken<MH1696> well<MH3190>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>I will raise<MH6965> up<MH6965> for them a prophet<MH5030> from among<MH7130> their countrymen<MH251> like<MH3644> you, and I will put<MH5414> My words<MH1697> in his mouth<MH6310>, and he shall speak<MH1696> to them everything<MH3605> that I command<MH6680> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And it shall come<MH1961> about<MH1961> that whoever<MH376, 834> does not listen<MH8085> to My words<MH1697> which<MH834> he speaks<MH1696> in My name<MH8034>, I Myself<MH595> will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>require<MH1875> <i>it</i> of him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>But the prophet<MH5030> who<MH834> speaks<MH1696> a word<MH1697> presumptuously<MH2102> in My name<MH8034>, <i>a word</i> which<MH834> I have not commanded<MH6680> him to speak<MH1696>, or which<MH834> he speaks<MH1696> in the name<MH8034> of other<MH312> gods<MH430>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>that prophet<MH5030> shall die<MH4191>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>And if<MH3588> you say<MH559> in your heart<MH3824>, ‘How<MH351a> will we recognize<MH3045> the word<MH1697> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> has not spoken<MH1696>?’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/deuteronomy/18-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>When<MH834> the prophet<MH5030> speaks<MH1696> in the name<MH8034> of the LORD<MH3068>, and the thing<MH1697> does not happen<MH1961> or come<MH935> <i>true,</i> that is the thing<MH1697> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> has not spoken<MH1696>.
