leading European publisher established by and working closely with learned societies, EDP Sciences supports open access and the unrestricted dissemination of science. EDP Sciences values the principles of open science and seeks to advance these whenever possible. </p> <p> Open access to publications is a major component of open science, and in fact the term “open science” is often used interchangeably with “open access”. However, open science means more than open access to scientific publications. Open science aims to make all scientific research outputs (including publications, data, methods, materials, code/software, peer review, educational resources and so on) accessible to everyone for the benefit of scientists and society as a whole. The UN Sustainable Development Goals, supported by the <a href="https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/sdg-publishers-compact/" target="_blank">UN SDG Publishers Compact</a> to which <a href="https://www.edpsciences.org/en/un-sdg-publishers-compact" target="_blank">EDP Sciences is a signatory</a>, are reliant on open access to information and knowledge. Among many global institutions, UNESCO has published a <a href="https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000379949/PDF/379949eng.pdf.multi.page=20" target="_blank">Recommendation on Open Science</a>. <h2 id="anchor_open-access">Open access</h2> <p>Open access means free access to information, plus unrestricted use of the content. At EDP Sciences, open access content is published under a Creative Commons license, in large majority <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/" target="_blank">CC-BY license</a>. The CC BY license allows anyone to copy, distribute and transmit work, adapt work, and make commercial use of the work on the condition that the user must attribute the work in the manner specified by the license. </p> <p>As a publisher established by and working with learned societies, EDP Sciences supports open access and the unrestricted dissemination of science. EDP Sciences aims to transition its entire portfolio of journals to full open access journals in the coming years. Find out more about the EDP Sciences open access portfolio <a href="https://www.edpsciences.org/en/popen-access" target="_blank">here</a>.</p> <p>EDP Sciences is a longstanding publisher of “Diamond” open access journals and books which are free for both readers and authors. </p> <p>EDP Sciences is also exploring and developing new publication models, and was among the early adopters of <a href="https://www.edpsciences.org/en/subscribe-to-open-s2o" target="_blank">Subscribe to Open (S2O)</a>, which aims to transition subscription journals to open access in a fair and sustainable way without Article Processing Charges (APCs). As an advocate of open science, EDP Sciences supports the principle of transparency in costs and prices. For all journals publishing in open access under S2O, <a href="https://www.edpsciences.org/fr/subscribe-to-open-s2o#anchor_transparency" target="_blank">annual transparency reports</a> are published, providing a range of financial and related information of interest to the subscribers and supporters of S2O. </p> <h2 id="anchor_open-data">Open data</h2> <h3 id="journal-data-policies">Journal data policies</h3> <p>EDP Sciences embraces <a href="https://www.go-fair.org/fair-principles/" target="_blank">FAIR principles</a> for research data. FAIR data are data which meet principles of Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability. These principles apply not only to “data” in the conventional sense, but also to the algorithms, tools, and workflows that led to that data. </p> <p>By default, EDP Sciences has a policy to encourage authors to upload data related to their research to an online repository, and to include a Data Availability Statement and data citations in their article (See EDPS’s default <a href="https://www.edpsciences.org/en/publishing-policies-ethics#anchor_Data-Sharing-and-Citation-Policy" target="_blank">Data sharing and Citation Policy</a>. The following journals published by EDP Sciences have implemented more prescriptive data sharing policies than the default data policy. Database linking</h3> <p>Database linking is one way to ensure that data can be easily discovered and accessed. This is done by creating bidirectional links between data repositories and published articles. EDP Sciences’ publication platform, <a href="https://www.edpsciences.org/en/about-edp-sciences/publishing-platform-technical-innovation" target="_blank">Vision4Press</a>, has been developed to support database linking. Readers have one-click access to linked data in dedicated public data repositories that may help to validate research or drive further investigations. This is visible as “Database links” on the right-hand panel of article pages on EDP Sciences’ platform. The following journals and conference proceedings support database linking. Development is ongoing to add links with more supported databases. </p> <p><b>Table</b>. Two pioneering initiatives are worth highlighting.</p> <p><b>- Audio data:</b> EDP Sciences has published the open access journal <i>Acta Acustica</i> since 2020. This was the first journal in the world to publish Audio Articles. Sounds are now not only represented in the classical way, i.e., in figures, but also in sound samples. This is particularly useful for music, speech, noise, hearing, etc. Playable sound clips in mp3 format are embedded in the PDF and HTML versions of the article in the places authors have indicated. It is also mandatory for authors to deposit audio files in an open public repository, and include a Data Availability Statement and data citation in their Audio Articles. See this example of an <a href="https://doi.org/10.1051/aacus/2021009" target="_blank">Audio Article</a>.</p> <p><b>Video data:</b> <a href="https://www.nestor-edp.org/" target="_blank">NESTOR</a>, EDP Sciences’ new editorial system, is the first submission system to fully integrate video submissions via <a href="https://cadmore.media/" target="_blank">Cadmore Media</a>. Cadmore Media is the expert in video streaming for scholarly publishing, providing video with DOIs, descriptive metadata, and full search-text. This integration allows NESTOR to receive and manage many types of video content such as proceedings and video articles, in a fully-integrated, seamless manner. The Cadmore tool is integrated in the submission system of <i>Visualized Cancer Medicine</i>. See this example of a <a href="https://doi.org/10.1051/vcm/2022006" target="_blank">Video article</a> published in <i>Visualized Cancer Medicine</i>.</p> <h2 id="anchor_preprints-open-peer-review">Preprints and open peer review</h2> <h3 id="green-open-access-policy">“Green open access” policy</h3> <p>Preprints are one of the aspects of open science. Preprints allow manuscripts to be shared with the community as and when they are ready, whether the final version of the article is published open access or not, allowing faster dissemination and in turn supporting scientific progress. EDP Sciences has long applied a generous self-archiving, or “green open access,” policy. See the <a href="https://www.edpsciences.org/en/authors/copyright-and-licensing#anchor_EDP-Sciences-Self-Archiving-Policy" target="_blank">Self-Archiving policy</a> for more details.</p> <p>In addition, EDP Sciences provides an automatic article deposition service to the open repository, <a href="https://hal.science/" target="_blank">HAL</a>. This service concerns articles published in open access in EDP Sciences journals under the <a href="https://www.edpsciences.org/en/national-open-access-agreement-in-france" target="_blank">French National open access agreement</a>, aand articles published in <i>Astronomy & Astrophysics</i> by researchers of the CEA (French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission). Authors are encouraged to double-check that the automatic deposit in HAL is error-free. Voir <a href="https://hal.science/hal-03846608" target="_blank">See this example</a> of an article from <i>Astronomy & Astrophysics</i> deposited in HAL.</p> <h3 id="peer-community-in">Peer Community In</h3> <p>EDP Sciences partners with <a href="https://peercommunityin.org/" target="_blank">Peer Community In</a>, a non-profit, non-commercial platform that publishes recommendations of preprints after peer-review through specific communities of researchers. The peer reviews and recommendations on PCI are in open access, constituting open peer review. A number of journals published by EDP Sciences are recognized as <a href="https://peercommunityin.org/pci-friendly-journals/#anchor_partner-friendly" target="_blank">PCI-friendly journals</a>, and more are on the way.
