If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>He said these things, and after this He says to them, <span class="red">“Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go that I may awaken him.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Therefore His disciples said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will get well.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He speaks of the rest of sleep. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So then Jesus told them plainly, <span class="red">“Lazarus has died, <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>and I am glad for your sake I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Therefore Thomas called Didymus said to the fellow disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with Him.” </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Comforts Martha and Mary</p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Therefore having come, Jesus found him already having been four days in the tomb. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia<span class="fn"><a href="#fna" title="Or ‘fifteen furlongs’; about 1.7 miles or 2.75 kilometers.">a</a></span> away, <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>and many of the Jews had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might console them concerning the brother. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Therefore Martha, when she heard that Jesus is coming, met Him; but Mary was sitting in the house. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Nevertheless, even now I know that whatever You might ask God, God will give You.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Jesus says to her, <span class="red">“Your brother will rise again.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Martha says to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection, in the last day.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Jesus said to her, <span class="red">“I am the resurrection and the life; the <i>one</i> believing in Me, even if he should die, he will live. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And everyone living and believing in Me shall never die, to the age. Do you believe this?”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>She says to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, the <i>One</i> coming into the world.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And having said these things she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, having said, “The Teacher is come, and He calls you.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And she, when she heard, rose up quickly and was coming to Him. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Then the Jews being with her in the house and consoling her, having seen that Mary rose up quickly and went out, followed her, having supposed she is going to the tomb that she might weep there. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Therefore Mary, when she came to where Jesus was, having seen Him, fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Therefore Jesus, when He saw her weeping and the Jews having come with her weeping, was deeply moved in spirit<span class="fn"><a href="#fnb" title="Or ‘He was angry in His spirit’; also in verse 38">b</a></span> and Himself troubled. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And He said, <span class="red">“Where have you laid him?”</span></p><p class="reg"> They say to Him, “Lord, come and see.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Jesus wept. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Therefore the Jews were saying, “Behold how He loved him!” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>But some of them said, “Was not this <i>man</i> having opened the eyes of the blind able to have caused that this one also should not have died?” </p><p class="hdg">Jesus Raises Lazarus<br /><span class="cross">(Acts 20:7-12)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>So Jesus, being deeply moved in Himself again, comes to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>Jesus says, <span class="red">“Take away the stone.”</span></p><p class="reg"> Martha, the sister of the <i>one</i> having died, says to Him, “Lord, he stinks already, for it is four days.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>Jesus says to her, <span class="red">“Did I not say to you that if you should believe, you will see the glory of God?”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>So they took away the stone. Now Jesus lifted His eyes upwards and said, <span class="red">“Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>And I knew that always You hear Me; but I said <i>it</i> on account of the crowd standing around, that they may believe that You sent Me.”</span> </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And having said these things, He cried out in a loud voice, <span class="red">“Lazarus, come forth!”</span> <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>The <i>one</i> having been dead came forth, the feet and hands being bound with linen strips, and his face bound about with a soudarion.</p><p class="reg"> Jesus says to them, <span class="red">“Unbind him and allow him to go.”</span> </p><p class="hdg">The Plot to Kill Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(Matthew 26:1-5; Mark 14:1-2; Luke 22:1-6)</span></p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>Therefore many of the Jews having come to Mary, and having seen what He did, believed in Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>Therefore the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and were saying, “What are we to do? For this man does many signs. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>If we shall let Him alone like this, all will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and will take away both our place and nation.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest the same year, said to them, “You know nothing at all, <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>nor do you consider that it is profitable for you that one man should die for the people, and the whole nation should not perish.” </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span>Now he did not say this from himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was about to die for the nation, <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-52.htm"><b>52</b></a></span>and not for the nation only, but also that children of God, those having been scattered, He might gather together into one. </p><p class="reg"><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-53.htm"><b>53</b></a></span>So from that day, they took counsel together that they might kill Him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/john/11-54.htm"><b>54</b></a></span>Therefore Jesus no longer walked publicly among the Jews, but went away from there into the region near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim.
