and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>they will take<MH1961, 7617> their captors<MH7617> captive<MH7617> and will rule<MH7287a> over their oppressors<MH5065>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>And it will be on the day<MH3117> when the LORD<MH3068> gives<MH5117> you rest<MH5117> from your hardship<MH6090a>, your turmoil<MH7267>, and from the harsh<MH7186> service<MH5656> in which<MH834> you have been enslaved<MH5647>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>that you will take<MH5375> up<MH5375> this<MH2088> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>taunt<MH4912> against<MH5921> the king<MH4428> of Babylon<MH894>, and say<MH559>, <p class="indent1stline">“How<MH349> the oppressor<MH5065> has ceased<MH7673a>, <t><p class="indent1"><i>And how</i> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>onslaught<MH4787b> has ceased<MH7673a>! <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>“The LORD<MH3068> has broken<MH7665> the staff<MH4294> of the wicked<MH7563>, <t><p class="indent1">The scepter<MH7626> of rulers<MH4910>, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Which used to strike<MH5221> the peoples<MH5971a> in fury<MH5678> with unceasing<MH1115, 5627> strokes<MH4347>, <t><p class="indent1">Which <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>subdued<MH7287a> the nations<MH1471> in anger<MH639> with unrestrained<MH2820, 1097> persecution<MH4783>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>“The whole<MH3605> earth<MH776> is<MH5117> at<MH5117> rest<MH5117> <i>and</i> is<MH8252> quiet<MH8252>; <t><p class="indent1">They break<MH6476> forth<MH6476> into shouts<MH7440> of<MH7440> joy<MH7440>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>“Even<MH1571> the juniper<MH1265> trees<MH1265> rejoice<MH8055> over you, <i>and</i> the cedars<MH730> of Lebanon<MH3844>, <i>saying,</i> <t><p class="indent1">‘Since<MH3975b> you have been laid<MH7901> low<MH7901>, no<MH3808> <i>tree</i> cutter<MH3772> comes<MH5927> up<MH5927> against<MH5921> us.’ <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>“Sheol<MH7585> below<MH4480, 8478> is<MH7264> excited<MH7264> about you, to meet<MH7122> you when you come<MH935>; <t><p class="indent1">It stirs<MH5782> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>spirits<MH7496> of<MH7496> the<MH7496> dead<MH7496> for you, all<MH3605> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>leaders<MH6260> of the earth<MH776>; <t><p class="indent1">It raises<MH6965> all<MH3605> the kings<MH4428> of the nations<MH1471> from their thrones<MH3678>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>“They will all<MH3605> respond<MH6030a> and say<MH559> to you, <t><p class="indent1">‘Even<MH1571> you have become<MH2470a> weak<MH2470a> as we, <t><p class="indent1">You have become<MH4911a> like<MH4911a> us. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>‘Your pride<MH1347b> <i>and</i> the music<MH1998> of your harps<MH5035b> <t><p class="indent1">Have been brought<MH3381> down<MH3381> to Sheol<MH7585>; <t><p class="indent1">Maggots<MH7415> are spread<MH3331> out<MH3331> <i>as your bed</i> beneath<MH8478> you <t><p class="indent1">And worms<MH8439b> are your covering<MH4374>.’ <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>“How<MH349> you have fallen<MH5307> from heaven<MH4605>, <t><p class="indent1">You <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>star<MH1966> of<MH1966> the<MH1966> morning<MH1966>, son<MH1121> of the dawn<MH7837>! <t><p class="indent1">You have been cut<MH1438> down<MH1438> to the earth<MH776>, <t><p class="indent1">You who defeated<MH2522> the nations<MH1471>! <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>“But you said<MH559> in your heart<MH3824>, <t><p class="indent1">‘I will ascend<MH5927> to heaven<MH4605>; <t><p class="indent1">I will raise<MH7311> my throne<MH3678> above<MH4605> the stars<MH3556> of God<MH410>, <t><p class="indent1">And I will sit<MH3427> on the mount<MH2022> of assembly<MH4150> <t><p class="indent1">In the recesses<MH3411> of the north<MH6828>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>‘I will ascend<MH5927> above<MH5921> the heights<MH1116> of the clouds<MH5645>; <t><p class="indent1">I will make<MH1819> myself like<MH1819> the Most<MH5945b> High<MH5945b>.’ <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>“Nevertheless<MH389> you will be brought<MH3381> down<MH3381> to Sheol<MH7585>, <t><p class="indent1">To the recesses<MH3411> of the pit<MH953a>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>“Those who see<MH7200> you will stare<MH7688> at you, <t><p class="indent1">They will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>closely<MH995> examine<MH995> you, <i>saying,</i> <t><p class="indent1">‘Is this<MH2088> the man<MH376> who made the earth<MH776> tremble<MH7264>, <t><p class="indent1">Who shook<MH7493> kingdoms<MH4467>, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Who made<MH7760> the world<MH8398> like a wilderness<MH4057b> <t><p class="indent1">And overthrew<MH2040> its cities<MH5892b>, <t><p class="indent1">Who did not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>allow<MH6605a> his prisoners<MH615> to <i>go</i> home<MH1004>?’ <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>“All<MH3605> the kings<MH4428> of the nations<MH1471> lie<MH7901> in glory<MH3519b>, <t><p class="indent1">Each<MH376> in his own <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>tomb<MH1004>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>“But you have been hurled<MH7993> out<MH7993> of your tomb<MH6913> <t><p class="indent1">Like <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>a rejected<MH8581> branch<MH5342>, <t><p class="indent1"><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>Clothed<MH3830> with those killed<MH2026> who have been pierced<MH2944> with a sword<MH2719>, <t><p class="indent1">Who go<MH3381> down<MH3381> to the stones<MH68> of the pit<MH953a> <t><p class="indent1">Like a trampled<MH947> corpse<MH6297>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>“You will not be united<MH3161> with them in burial<MH6900>, <t><p class="indent1">Because<MH3588> you have ruined<MH7843> your country<MH776>, <t><p class="indent1">You have killed<MH2026> your people<MH5971a>. <t><p class="indent1">May the descendants<MH2233> of evildoers<MH7489a> never<MH3808, 5769> be mentioned<MH7121>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>“Prepare<MH3559> a place<MH4293> of<MH4293> slaughter<MH4293> for his sons<MH1121> <t><p class="indent1">Because of the wrongdoing<MH5771> of their fathers<MH1>. <t><p class="indent1">They must not arise<MH6965> and take<MH3423> possession<MH3423> of the earth<MH776>, <t><p class="indent1">And fill<MH4390> the surface<MH6440> of the world<MH8398> with cities<MH5892b>.” <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>“I will rise<MH6965> up<MH6965> against<MH5921> them,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635>, “and eliminate<MH3772> from Babylon<MH894> name<MH8034> and survivors<MH7605>, offspring<MH5209> and descendants<MH5220>,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>“I will also make<MH7760> it the property<MH4180> of the hedgehog<MH7090> and swamps<MH98> of water<MH4325>, and I will sweep<MH2894> it away<MH2894> with the broom<MH4292> of destruction<MH8045>,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635>. <p class="hdg">Judgment on Assyria</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>The LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635> has sworn<MH7650>, saying<MH559>, “Certainly<MH518, 3808>, just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> I have intended<MH1819>, so<MH3651> it has happened<MH1961>, and just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> I have planned<MH3289>, so it will stand<MH6965>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/14-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>to break<MH7665> Assyria<MH804b> in My land<MH776>, and I will trample<MH947> him on My mountains<MH2022>.
