He identifies four main sub groups of the autobiography namely: the factual autobiography, the fictionalised autobiography, the literary autobiography and the autobiographical fiction as present in many ways the works of practising writers in the West African sub Region. The last three types of autobiographies named above are glossed as having enough information and literary value to merit an analysis using the Genettean model. Genette’s macrotextual demarcations of Time , Mood and Voice and their subcategories are used to show the differences between these three identified autobiographies. The paper also shows the three works on a continuum from the most factual to the most novelistic. This paper proposes to join the critical debate that this area of criticism is as important as other areas of critical discourses. This paper examines literary and social values in selected biographies and autobiographies. The selected works examined here are: Nnamdi Azikiwe's My Odyssey, Phanuel Egejuru's Chinua Achebe: Pure and Simple, Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom, Wole Soyinka's Ake. The paper is hinged on M. M. Kanwadkar's theory of autobiography. The paper argues that biographers and writers of personal life history also employ literary techniques just the same way as novelists do when attempting to construct their respective intentions. Most theoreticians classify autobiography as literary nonfiction; others who refuse to take these self-explorations at face value derisively refer to them as fiction. The most intriguing signifier of an autobiography is the first-person 'I', the subject as well as the object of the autobiographical narrative. This 'I' is however all the time in a flux and, by definition, the story of a Being written by the person himself-on a daily basis as a diary, in retrospect as memoirs, scattered in the works in a disguised manner or recorded as oral history-is full of contradictions and complexities. The genre is traditionally rooted in the West in the Catholic tradition of confessions. Like the genre of novel, autobiography too is not indigenous to the Indian literary landscape. I refer to Saint Augustine's Confessions, Günter Grass' Peeling the Onion, Gandhi's The Story of my Experiments with Truth and autobiographies of Dalit writers Omprakash Valmiki (Joothan), Baby Kamble (The Prisons we Broke) and Vasant Kamble (Growing up Untouchable in India) in order to trace the evolution of this genre and also to compare the typology of these texts which are otherwise very different in terms of content. stylistics approach, 2022</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Through a cognitive stylistics lens and with a focus on the image schema theory, this qualitative desktop study aims to compare and contrast the linguistic expressions used to narrate exile experience of older women who went in exile to those of young women who were born and/or reared in exile. The linguistic expressions studied in the study were obtained using a narrative approach, in which a content analysis checklist was used to collect data from four selected autobiographies, namely Taming my Elephant by Tshiwa Troudie Amulungu, South West Africa to Namibia: My Personal Struggle by FousyShinana-Kambombo, Valentina: The Exile Child by Valentina Nghiwete, and Child No. 95: My German-African Odyssey by Lucia Engombe. The autobiographies were analysed by first comparing how basic image schema can be used as cognitive tools in conceptualising exile experiences; secondly, analysing how different image schemas, namely SOURCE-PATH-GOAL, BALANCE, CONTAINER, and LINK, can be used to understand abstract linguistic extensions and meaning; and finally, investigating the impact of exile experiences on second generation exiles in a post-independent Namibia through a cognitive lens. The majority of linguistic terms employed in autobiographical narrations were found to be based on the four image schema at either the concrete or abstract levels, according to the study.The study also found that all autobiographies used figurative languages that were based on the various image schemas used in the study. More in-depth research in applied linguistics is necessary in order to appreciate the complexities that the exile women faced while in exile and how these experiences influenced their lives in post-independence Namibia. The study concludes that the embodied image schema offers a fundamental conceptual structure of experiences and the basis of a person's story schema is his or her own embodied actions. It furthers concludes that image schemas can be utilised to grasp both physical structures and abstract extensions of linguistic utterances allowing for the comprehension of both literal and figurative languages. In the twentieth century, the relation between the deeply rooted oral tradition and literary traditions intensified. We aim to reveal literary analysis tools that help to trace ways how oral narrative genres found reflection in African short fiction under analysis. A case study is based on two short stories by women writers, The Rain Came by Grace Ogot and The Lovers by Bessie Head. Images and symbols both, in oral and written traditions in Africa, as well as the way they evolved and extended in a literary genre of short fiction are considered within the framework of hermeneutics, reader reception theory and feminist literary criticism. The results obtained in the study prove that oral narrative genres interact with literary genres, though most importantly, women’s writing as a literary category and images embodied in the short stories play a decisive role and deviation from the images embodied in African oral tradition.
