Its geostrategic importance was even more evident when, since 2015, the Western Balkans have been crossed by one of the most impressive migratory routes to Europe, the so-called “Balkan route”, showing the political instability of both the region and the EU. The massive flow of asylum seekers led the EU institutions to recognize in April 2015 the exceptional nature of the situation, calling unsuccessfully for the adoption of solidarity measures to overcome the catastrophic humanitarian situation in the so-called “frontline Member States”. It strives to present evidence of a correlation between the slowly declining interest in this region from the EU's perspective, with a corresponding discrepancy between declared integration commitments and their actual execution. The migrant crisis adds further complications and is at the heart of these deteriorating developments. The EU's enlargement policy towards the WB has weakened its transformational power towards new possible EU member states in the past decade. Looking at the enlargement policy in the context of migrant crisis from a broader perspective, it has failed to manifest unity and solidarity when managing fundamental problems such as migrant flows. There had never been a time when the need for a consistent approach, both from the individual Member States and the EU as a whole, was more urgent. The Union's response during 2015's refugee crisis was unreliable, fragmented, and it largely affected the Western Balkan countries that are now aspiring to become EU Member States. This paper analyses how the EU's response to the refugee crisis has affected and still affects the countries in the Western Balkans, which are all in different stages of their European integration. The refugee crisis created many challenges for the Western Balkan countries which are all weak democracies and which have unstable institutions. This paper also analyses the numerous domestic costs connected to these countries when faced with the refugee crisis. The initial reaction of the EU member states to this development became to take individual measures, such as strengthening or re-launching border controls. The failure of these responses taken at the national level and the rising existential threat towards the Schengen regime motivated the EU member states and institutions to search for a common European solution by resorting to the migration cooperation developing since the mid-1980s. After the ineffectiveness of the common measures in producing the expected outcomes, the EU decided to develop further its ongoing migration cooperation with the accession countries in the Western Balkans and Turkey. This study aims to examine the EU's migration cooperation with the accession countries within the scope of the refugee crisis. The current article is aimed at analyzing the EU’s conditionality principle towards the Western Balkans countries from an unusual angle, by assessing Serbia’s and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’s level of commitment in the joint management of the current migration crisis, principle which is important in the evaluation of their performance concerning the prospect of a future membership. The author wishes to expound three patterns of EU conditionality, i.e. the positive-, the negative and finally the compliance conditionality, by undertaking a comparative analysis of the European Commission’s Progress Reports on Serbia and Macedonia in 2015, respectively 2016, examining their performance during the migration impasse. Briefly shall be disclosed also the assistance given by the EU to these countries, wondering whether existed a coherent response on the EU level or a fragmented approach on the level of Member States. The rational choice paradigm has been chosen as the theoretical pillar of the study, as it argues that political leaders are rational policymakers, who based on a thorough cost-benefit analysis will try to make the best foreign policy decisions possible. The 2015–16 migration crisis brought the region into the spotlight as large numbers of migrants used the Balkan migration route on their way to Western Europe. Individual countries and the EU institutions developed weak and often contradictory responses to the crisis. This has had a negative effect on the Balkan peoples&#39; perception of the EU, which had previously been positive. On a symbolic level the migration crisis has revealed the fragile relationship between the EU and the Western Balkan states.
