To explain the outcomes, we study the relationship between new product development (NPD) (an example of DCs) and metaflexibility. To explain the role of DCs, we study how human resources and operating routines moderate the role of DCs in achieving adaptation in the firm. Design/methodology/approach Using data from 200 managers of Spanish firms, we apply regression analysis to test the moderating role of human resources and operating routines in the relationship between NPD and metaflexibility. Findings Our results demonstrate that highly qualified and committed workers enhance the effectiveness of NPD, while high frequency in repetition of operating routines significantly damages such effectiveness. Research limitations/implications This study is limited to analysing a unique DC (NPD), but future research could explore contributions on other consolidated DCs (e.g., alliance management capability) and compare results. Further, our data are based on managerial perceptions rather than objective measures. Practical implications Managers who must address environmental changes should connect generation of DCs to complementary functional strategies, especially human resources strategy. Originality/value This paper suggests additional outcomes derived from DCs, such as metaflexibility. It attempts to understand the complex process by which DCs interact to modify operating routines in order to respond to environmental Learning orientation and knowledge integration represent two antecedents of strategic flexibility, and strategic flexibility is the developed ability that facilitates NPD. Design/methodology/approach: To empirically test the relationships, we used data from 236 European firms and performed Structural Equation Modeling. Findings: Results indicate that HR-related QM practices contribute to (1) creating a learning-oriented company, (2) integrating knowledge, and (3) supporting successful new product development (NPD). Furthermore, knowledge integration is positively related to NPD through strategic flexibility. Practical implications: This study is relevant for practitioners because it identifies key points in QM implementation that enable firms to be more strategically flexible and thus better able to regularly develop new products. Originality/value: When organizations must sustain their competitive positions by continuously adapting to environmental changes, it is important to study not only how QM implementation is positively related to the firm performance on which a significant portion of QM literature has focused but also to study whether QM implementation is related to strategic variables and can make a contribution to strategic processes. We use one of the main common effects of dynamic capabilities (operational, structural and strategic flexibility) to design a measurement tool for dynamic capabilities generation. Based on this measurement tool, we test the influence of several factors identified in the specialized literature as potential causes that trigger and promote dynamic capabilities generation. We use data from a survey of 200 CEOs of Spanish firms to test the model. The results show that only organizations whose managers have perceived a high degree of environmental dynamism have generated dynamic capabilities. The results also show that knowledge codification and technical innovation are significantly related to dynamic capabilities generation. To understand how these changes take place, dynamic capability perspective offers a view into how organizations match and even create market change. These capabilities are driven by underlying mechanisms that I examine in this study to shed light on how a specific form of dynamic capabilities, i.e. new product development capability generates change. To do so, this study provides a historical analysis of a Finnish meteorological instrument company Vaisala to map out how new product development capability drove change in the company during 1970s and enabled it to become a multiproduct firm. The findings of this study explicate new product development mechanisms and how these mechanisms can explain new product development both on the project level as well as on the organizational level. I introduce and develop three categories of mechanisms that reveal how new product ideas are developed, how the projects are evaluated for commercialization and the impact that these projects have on the organization. Subsequently, I explore how combinations of these mechanisms produce success paths on the new product development project level. I also investigate how the mechanisms enable us to understand changes in the organizational level that are driven by new product development. In doing so, I highlight how the capability can operationalize strategy, enable the realignment of the organization to its market and how exercising this capability contributes to the transformation of the organization into a multiproduct firm. Overall, this study is among the few studies to provide an empirically grounded examination of the mechanism of dynamic capabilities and their internal functioning. Therefore, it provides empirical evidence on how the mechanisms of dynamic capabilities explain change in organizations.
