(Now<MG1161> <i>these</i> were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>the days<MG2250> of Unleavened<MG106> Bread<MG106>.) <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/12-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>When he had arrested<MG4084> him, he put<MG5087> him in prison<MG5438>, turning<MG3860> him over<MG3860> to four<MG5064> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>squads<MG5069> of soldiers<MG4757> to guard<MG5442> him, intending<MG1014> <i>only</i> after<MG3326> the Passover<MG3957> to bring<MG321> him before the people<MG2992>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/12-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>So<MG3767> Peter<MG4074> was kept<MG5083> in the prison<MG5438>, but prayer<MG4335> for him was being<MG1096> made<MG1096> to God<MG2316> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>intensely<MG1619> by the church<MG1577>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/12-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>On <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>the very<MG1565> night<MG3571> when<MG3753> Herod<MG2264> was<MG3195> about<MG3195> to<MG3195> bring<MG4254> him forward<MG4254>, Peter<MG4074> was sleeping<MG2837> between<MG3342> two<MG1417> soldiers<MG4757>, bound<MG1210> with two<MG1417> chains<MG254>, and guards<MG5441> in front<MG4253> of the door<MG2374> were watching<MG5083> over<MG5083> the prison<MG5438>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/12-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And behold<MG2400>, an angel<MG32a> of the Lord<MG2962> suddenly stood<MG2186> near<MG2186> <i>Peter,</i> and a light<MG5457> shone<MG2989> in the cell<MG3612>; and he struck<MG3960> Peter’s<MG4074> side<MG4125> and woke<MG1453> him, saying<MG3004>, “Get<MG450> up<MG450> quickly<MG5034>.” And his chains<MG254> fell<MG1601b> off<MG1601b> his hands<MG5495>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/12-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And the angel<MG32a> said<MG3004> to him, “Put<MG2224> on<MG2224> your belt<MG2224> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>strap<MG5265> on<MG5265> your sandals<MG4547>.” And he did<MG4160> so<MG3779>. And he *said<MG3004> to him, “Wrap<MG4016> your cloak<MG2440> around<MG4016> you and follow<MG190> me.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/12-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And he went<MG1831> out<MG1831> and continued to follow<MG190>, and <i>yet</i> he did not know<MG3609a> that what was being<MG1096> done<MG1096> by the angel<MG32a> was real<MG227>, but thought<MG1380> he was seeing<MG991> a vision<MG3705>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/12-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when they had passed<MG1330> the first<MG4413> and second<MG1208> guard<MG5438>, they came<MG2064> to the iron<MG4603> gate<MG4439> that leads<MG5342> into the city<MG4172>, which<MG3748> opened<MG455> for them by<MG844> itself<MG844>; and they went<MG1831> out<MG1831> and went<MG4281> along<MG4281> one<MG1520> street<MG4505>, and immediately<MG2112> the angel<MG32a> departed<MG868> from him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/12-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>When Peter<MG4074> came<MG1096> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>to himself<MG1438>, he said<MG3004>, “Now<MG3568> I know<MG3609a> for sure<MG230> that the Lord<MG2962> has sent<MG1821> forth<MG1821> His angel<MG32a> and rescued<MG1807> me from the hand<MG5495> of Herod<MG2264> and from all<MG3956> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>that the Jewish<MG2453> people<MG2992> were expecting<MG4329>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/12-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And when he realized<MG4894> <i>this,</i> he went<MG2064> to the house<MG3614> of Mary<MG3137>, the mother<MG3384> of John<MG2491>, who was also called<MG1941> Mark<MG3138>, where<MG3757> many<MG2425> were gathered<MG4867> together<MG4867> and were praying<MG4336>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/12-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>When he knocked<MG2925> at the door<MG2374> of the gate<MG4440>, a slave<MG3814> woman<MG3814> named<MG3686> Rhoda<MG4498> came<MG4334> to answer<MG5219>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/12-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>When she recognized<MG1921> Peter’s<MG4074> voice<MG5456>, because<MG575> of her joy<MG5479> she did not open<MG455> the gate<MG4440>, but ran<MG1532> in<MG1532> and announced<MG518> that Peter<MG4074> was standing<MG2476> in front<MG4253> of the gate<MG4440>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/12-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>They said<MG3004> to her, “You are<MG3105> out<MG3105> of<MG3105> your mind<MG3105>!” But she kept insisting<MG1340> that it was so<MG3779>. They said<MG3004>, “It is his angel<MG32a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/12-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But Peter<MG4074> continued<MG1961> knocking<MG2925>; and when they had opened<MG455> <i>the door,</i> they saw<MG3708> him and were amazed<MG1839>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/12-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>But motioning<MG2678> to them with his hand<MG5495> to be silent<MG4601>, he described<MG1334> to them how<MG4459> the Lord<MG2962> had led<MG1806> him out<MG1806> of the prison<MG5438>.
