Flevoland/NL; c. 4300-4000 cal. BC) have been considered functionally homogeneous. Ceramic analysis suggests that two subgroups may be identified by a correlation between temper, wall thickness and decoration. This study aims to determine whether the proposed subgroups also represent functional categories using botanical analysis by means of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and chemical residue analysis using Direct Temperature-resolved Mass Spectrometry (DTMS). It is concluded that ceramics from S3 can be divided into two subgroups, each with a specific use. Group 1 pots (n=6) are plant tempered pots used to cook meals without cereals, while group 2 pots (n=9) also contain stone grit temper and are used to cook meal including cereals. Looking at the results from a chronological perspective, it appears that with the introduction of cereals in the cooking process, traditional meals were transferred to a new type of pottery (group 1), while the nouvelle cuisine ended up in the traditional pots (group 2). This case study is a strong clue that the introduction of cereals in the diet of the Swifterbant people was an innovation embedded in meaningful action. As such, it is an important clue that this step in the process of Neolithisation was perceived as significant.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;2013. Some of the sites have been excavated in the last decades of the 20th century. Within the framework of the Odyssey project of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, the excavated materials from three sites (Keinsmerbrug, Mienakker and Zeewijk) could be fully analysed. The results of archaeobotanical research, including the combined botanical and chemical analyses of organic residues (crusts) in ceramics, as well as the study of isolated remains of processed plant food and charred remains of parenchymatous tissue are presented. It is extremely challenging to find out what kind of food people prepared in the past and to determine actual prehistoric vessel use, to understand what kind of meals people prepared in ceramic vessels, what pots they used for what kind of foods, and if they used the same types of pots for the same foods all the time. The results obtained for the three sites are compared to the existing, dichotomous model developed for habitation of the Single Grave culture in the area, with small special activity sites and large permanent settlements.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Kubiak-Martens, L., O. The data indicate the presence of predominantly eutrophic, nutrient-rich reed and forb vegetation and suggest the preparation of meals consisting of fish and fruits. The finds from the hearth, dominated by uncarbonised remains of wetland taxa, form a remarkable part of the find assemblage. Therefore, the discussion concerns assemblages, deposition processes and interpretations of uncarbonised and carbonised finds from hearths at comparable, contemporary sites. The wide variation of macroremains assemblages of hearths indicates that plant deposition in hearths is understood only partly and remains a topic for further research. Keywords: Hunter-gatherers, Archaeobotanical macroremains, Hearths, Food preparation, Deposition processes Other archaeobotanical data from Bergschenhoek are presented in Out 2009 (PhD thesis, appendix).</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;What&#39;s in a hearth? It examines pottery use and culinary practices across the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition, from the late 6th to the early 4th millennium cal BC. Residue analyses were performed on more than 200 samples from nine archaeological sites, representing different cultural groups from this transitional phase. This includes the analysis of charred food residues encrusted on the vessel surfaces by elemental analysis-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (EA-IRMS), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), stereomicroscopic analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), as well as the analysis of absorbed lipids by gas chromatography-combustion-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-C-IRMS). This study provides the first evidence of ruminant dairy fats in Early Neolithic Limburg pottery, supporting the hypothesis that this pottery was produced and used by LBK farmers rather than hunter-gatherer populations. The first indigenous pottery of the Swifterbant culture was frequently used to process freshwater fish (often together with plant foods) and ruminant meat, although several of the studied vessels likely contained mixtures of resources which could also include porcine products. Ruminant dairy is nearly absent from this pottery. Similar results were obtained for pottery of the subsequent Michelsberg culture/Group of Spiere of the late 5th and early 4th millennium cal BC. The limited presence of ruminant dairy fats in this pottery contrasts with the findings for Middle Neolithic pottery from neighbouring regions, providing further evidence for the existence of regional variations in pottery use or culinary practices throughout prehistoric NW Europe. However, our current view of pottery use during the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition in northern Belgium might be biased by the difficulties in distinguishing between wild and domesticated ruminant adipose fats as well as in detecting plant foods through lipid residue analysis.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Pottery use across the Neolithic transition in northern Belgium: evidence from isotopic, molecular and microscopic analysis&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:117223789,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/122586287/Pottery_use_across_the_Neolithic_transition_in_northern_Belgium_evidence_from_isotopic_molecular_and_microscopic_analysis&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/122586287/Pottery_use_across_the_Neolithic_transition_in_northern_Belgium_evidence_from_isotopic_molecular_and_microscopic_analysis"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="7" data-entity-id="125563700" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/125563700/2024_Occupation_in_North_West_Frisia_North_Holland_between_AD_400_and_900_from_a_pottery_perspective_In_A_Nieuwhof_E_Knol_and_H_van_de_Velde_eds_Making_Places_Making_Lives_Landscape_and_Settlement_in_Coastal_Wetlands_Braunschweig_69_82">2024. The early 1990s saw the start of an ambitious research projectfocusing on early medieval Frisia: the so-called Frisia-project of the universities of Amsterdam and Groningen. Its main aim was to disclose the archeological information on three areas of early medieval Frisia, notably in three coastal provinces of theNetherlands: Friesland, North-Holland and South-Holland. The studies on Friesland and South-Holland were published in two PhD theses (Gerrets 2010; Dijkstra 2011). For various reasons this did not happen for North-Holland. This gap has recently been filled with the publication covering North-Holland in the first millennium (Nicolay and Van Eerden 2023), including data and chapters by this author. The present paper evaluates our knowledge of the developments in medieval pottery, which corresponds to a chapter in this book. Although the discussion focuses on provenance and typology of the pottery, the higher purpose is to assess the migratory movements of the people who used the pots.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;2024. A Matter of Life and Death at Mienakker (the Netherlands) Late Neolithic Behavioural Variability in a Dynamic Landscape.</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">On this Corded Ware Culture settlement site of Mienakker 546 sherds with a weight of 3 grams or more have been found. The most striking feature of these ceramics is their uniformity. The assemblage can be subdivided into two main wares; a large group of thin-walled ware (5-7.5 mm) and a smaller group of thick-walled ware (9-9.5mm). Almost all sherds are tempered with grog and sand (n=595, 91%). Plant temper occurs only in a small group of thick-walled ware. The ceramics were most probably at least partially produced locally, as a stone tool used to smoothen or polish the surface of vessels was found. 44% of the rims and 25% of the wall sherds are decorated. Decoration was solely applied to thin-walled ware. Decoration made by impressing a cord is most frequent (n=119, 71%). This decorative motif is found only on sherds with a thickness ranging between 4 and 7.5 mm. Decoration made by impressing a spatula occurs on 49 sherds (29%). There are three motifs: zigzag decoration has been applied to eleven sherds with a thickness of 5-5.5 mm, decoration with horizontal rows of oblique spatula impressions in one direction (n=36, 21%) and in alternating directions (n=2, 1%) have been applied to sherds measuring 6-7.5 mm. The vessels are almost all tripartite with either a slender ‘beaker shape’ Only the thin-walled ware shows signs of cooking. Five types of meals were cooked in this thin-walled ware. It is likely that a small number of vessels are related to the house (MKII) and the funerary structure (MKI), and thus to phases one and two of the occupation. A comparison is made with the ceramics from the previously analysed nearby settlement site of Keinsmerbrug. The results are already very striking: Keinsmerbrug shows a large degree of variation in its ceramics, but the vessels were used to prepare only one type of meal. The ceramics from Mienakker are very uniform, but were used to prepare different types of meals.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Ceramics from Mienakker (A Corded Ware Culture wetland settlement site in the Netherlands)&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:32362718,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/5168657/Ceramics_from_Mienakker_A_Corded_Ware_Culture_wetland_settlement_site_in_the_Netherlands_&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/5168657/Ceramics_from_Mienakker_A_Corded_Ware_Culture_wetland_settlement_site_in_the_Netherlands_"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:34799966,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;workUrl&quot;:null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:34799966,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;workUrl&quot;:null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_34799966" style="display: none"><div class="js-scribd-document-container"><div class="scribd--document-loading js-scribd-document-loader" style="display: block;"><img alt="Loading..." src="//a.academia-assets.com/images/loaders/paper-load.gif" /><p>Loading Preview</p></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="scribd--no-preview-alert js-preview-unavailable"><p>Sorry, preview is currently unavailable.
