It was originally allotted to the tribe of Simeon within the territory of Judah. Ziklag later became notable as the place where David sought refuge from King Saul and where he was given asylum by Achish, the Philistine king of Gath (<a href="/1_samuel/27-5.htm">1 Samuel 27:5-6</a>). This city became a base for David and his men, and it was here that David received news of Saul's death (<a href="/2_samuel/1.htm">2 Samuel 1:1</a>). Archaeologically, Ziklag's exact location is debated, but it is generally believed to be in the Negev region.
